Lynside ProteYn A TRUE GAME-CHANGER Exciting Alternative to Animal & Plant Proteins
The World s population is projected to grow to 9.7 billion people by 2050 i of which two-thirds are projected to live in urban areas ii. This increase in population combined with rapidly changing eating habits is creating a substantial food gap between the food available and the expected demand in Increasingly urbanized and affluent, consumers from emerging economies tend to shift toward more diversified and higher-calorie diets that include more animal-based foods. Proteins are made from amino-acids and found virtually everywhere throughout the human body. However, not all amino-acids can be synthesized internally. Protein consumption is therefore crucial to human health and required for growth and repair. Whereas in developed countries most individuals consume more than required for optimal health; in some of the poorest areas in the world, access to good quality protein sources is limited and millions of people do not get enough protein, which can result in major health issues. The fact that protein is required as part of any balanced diet cannot be argued. Although many types of food (meat and animal products, plants, algae, etc.) contain significant amounts of proteins, the social, environmental and economic impacts of today s global production and consumption patterns vary greatly from one source to another. The food, beverage & nutrition industry is therefore faced with a major challenge: find a solution to meet the protein needs of nearly 10 billion people in a sustainable, affordable and healthy way? A recent paper from the World Resources Institute shows how small changes in consumers choices could have a tremendous impact on the global food supply. No need for all of us to become vegan or vegetarian; but, for example, the paper reported that if the average American just ate less meat and dairy, it could cut their diet s environmental footprint in half. Then raises the question of how to compensate for the loss in protein intake with other protein sources, which not all are as complete as animal proteins. The industry is faced with a major challenge: to find a solution to meet the protein needs of nearly 10 billion people in a sustainable, affordable and healthy way? 2
A shift in the protein market Even though most people in developed country already get enough protein, consumer s interest in protein is not fading. However, we are witnessing a shift in the type of proteins consumers choose, as more people claim to follow a special diet restricting specific food sources iii (cf. Fig.1), amounting to nearly 2/3 of participants in Nielsen s Global Health and Ingredients Sentiment Survey. An increasing number of people is indeed trying to reduce their consumption of meat and other animal products and label themselves as vegans, vegetarians or flexitarians. Figure 1 Restricted dietary requirements around the globe (Nielsen, 2016) Whether it be for health reasons, out of concern for animal welfare, environmental sustainability or out of fear of ingesting antibiotic residues & hormones, consumers are increasingly turning away from animal protein and looking for alternative sources to fulfill their nutritional needs. As a result, launches of products with plant-based proteins are outpacing the growth of more traditional animal protein products, said Joanne Clifton, global account manager for Innova Market Insights. iv The appeal of protein varying across consumer groups A lot of consumer groups are looking at enhancing their protein intake but their needs and goals might vary greatly. Sports nutrition has always been a prominent segment for proteins. However, nowadays, it is not just about bulking up anymore. For example, proteins are also used for recovery. Over the past few years, proteins have been switching from niche to mainstream and are not exclusively used by professional athletes anymore. Active consumers are turning to them as a healthy option to fuel their day, not just their workout. Proteins are also generating interest among demographics such as seniors and dieters. 3
With age, metabolism slows down and the body assimilates less essential nutrients. Therefore, the elderly tends to need more protein than younger adults in order to maintain an active lifestyle and to prevent sarcopenia, an age-related condition defined by the loss of muscle mass. The elderly is currently the fastest growing segment of the population and, according to the United Nations, they will represent nearly one-quarter of the global population by The older generation thus represents real opportunities for the industry and should play an important role in product development in the coming decades, especially knowing that a high number of seniors are actively on the lookout for products that contribute to a healthier lifestyle. As far as dieters are concerned, proteins are a weight management tool helping them to lose or maintain weight. Relying on the satiety properties of protein is a more natural and healthy way to diet than drastically reducing caloric intake or taking sketchy nutritional supplements. It also reflects today s growing interest in achieving wellness through diet, led by increasingly healthconscious consumers who want simpler food offerings that they can trust. Lynside ProteYn, the next big thing in the protein market Lynside ProteYn is a range of high-quality Yeast Proteins derived from primary-grown inactive Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts. With consumers increasing interest in alternatives to animal proteins, we have witnessed the rise of plant-based proteins such as soy protein and pea protein. More recently, a multitude of new protein sources - from algae, mycoprotein, insects, etc.- have begun to gain traction; but there is no knowing how they will do in the long-term. In fact, they must overcome significant hurdles such as functional and organoleptic drawbacks as well as consumers potential concerns over safety and psychological factors (when eating insects is concerned!). The Lynside ProteYn range is extremely promising as it builds upon nutritional yeasts notoriety, which severely reduces the potential for concerns. Nutritional yeasts are indeed very well-known and they have been trusted by consumers for decades to help with both targeted benefits and overall well-being. 4
Lynside ProteYn is a true game-changer for the protein market which is currently driven by animal and vegetable sources of protein. Backed by Lesaffre Human Care 160+ years of experience in the yeast sector, this new source of non-animal protein is a complete protein containing all essential and branched-chain amino acids required to stay healthy. It is the first Yeast Protein ever marketed and it offers many outstanding features, from clean-label and nutritional density to environmental sustainability. Lynside ProteYn, the finest protein for enhanced nutrition As previously mentioned, protein is crucial to any diet. However, not all protein sources are able to provide all of the essential amino-acids that the body needs to function properly. Many plant-based proteins actually lack one or more of these essential amino-acids, which means that a combination of different proteins must be regularly consumed to achieve adequate nutrition. As shown in Figure 2, both our Lynside ProteYn ingredients provide all nine-essential amino-acids and compare well with other non-animal protein sources. Indeed, both Lynside Nutri ProteYn55 and Lynside ProteYn70 have a chemical score v above 100% and a Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCASS vi ) greater than 1 which is similar to dairy protein and much higher than all plant-based proteins. Figure 2 Comparative Aminogram of all essential amino-acids (mg/g protein) (LHC, 2016) As show in Figure 2, both our Lynside ProteYn ingredients are clearly above the other sources as far as Lysine and Threonine are concerned. Being highly sensitive, Lysine is an amino-acid of particular interest to people consuming an exclusively plant-based diet. Lynside Nutri ProteYn55 and Lynside ProteYn70 also contain significant amounts of all branched chain amino-acids (BCAA): Leucine, Valine and Isoleucine. These three components play an important part in sports recovery as they induce an increase in protein synthesis and inhibit catabolism. Not only our Lynside ProteYn ingredients offer a complete amino-acid profile and high digestibility score but they are also packed with other micronutrients. Unlike many plant-based protein sources where the protein is isolated from the plant, therefore losing all additional nutrients, Lynside ProteYn is a range of wholesome ingredients offering naturally-occurring fibers, B-vitamin-complex and minerals such as iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium. 5
Lynside ProteYn, Guaranteed Safety and Dietary Suitability At Lesaffre Human Care, we are committed to providing the highest level of service and products excellence. Part of this is ensuring that our products are safe and suitable for specific diets. As we do on all of our new ingredients, we performed a series of tests on innovative protein source Lynside ProteYn and we can guarantee that it is: non-gmo, produced without pesticides or antibiotics, and free from anti-nutritional factors such as protease inhibitors, phytates, etc. In addition to these safety features, Lynside ProteYn is compatible with most dietary preferences and restrictions, being allergen-free, gluten & dairy free, vegan/vegetarian and flexitarian-friendly. Lynside ProteYn, eco-friendly production for the finest protein Beyond featuring outstanding nutritional properties, Lynside ProteYn also offers the benefit of low environmental impact thanks to a very specific and perfectly mastered manufacturing process, making it a sustainable alternative compared to other more resource-intensive and environmentally impactful sources (cf. Fig.3). Figure 3 Comparative Diagram of the environmental impact of yeast, soy and beef productions (LHC, 2017) Lynside ProteYn - Reduced water consumption Yeast Protein production is exceptionally efficient when it comes to water consumption, requiring less water need than for beef or soy production for example. Lynside ProteYn - Limited carbon footprint Yeast Protein production produces significantly lower amounts of greenhouse gas than beef production and similar ones to soy production. Lynside ProteYn - Quick turnaround Yeast is a microorganism that multiplies very quickly, therefore Yeast Protein production is a very short process compared to plants or animals that need a much longer time to grow and fully develop. What we eat matters! Not only does our diet influence our overall wellbeing but it also impacts the environment and the resources available. 6
Lynside ProteYn, an exciting way to add protein to your diet Lynside ProteYn is a healthy source of protein and other nutrients for virtually any consumer looking at enhancing his/her protein intake. It can be a true asset in developing healthy, yet indulgent, innovative products and depending on the recipe it might allow the manufacturer to make nutrient-content claims. Offered as flakes, it can be directly sprinkled on omelets, soups, salads, toasts, etc. Alternatively, it can also be incorporated in powder form, to common food and beverages, both at home or on an industrial level, without affecting the end-result. Here are a few examples of applications in which the addition of Lynside ProteYn could enhance the nutritional content: - Smoothies - Breakfast cereals - Bakery products - Weight management items - Etc. Designed to meet modern consumers expectations who are increasingly looking for alternatives to animal-protein, and who want a product they can trust without compromising on nutrition or on taste, Lynside ProteYn is truly unique as it is the first Yeast Protein on the market. It delivers a unique set of functional and nutritional benefits and offers the additional advantage of being a complete, yet non-animal, protein with a low environmental impact. With Lynside ProteYn, you also benefit from a dedicated team of experts, available to assist you in product development and marketing. 7
