5 Why do users need FoodEXplorer? Most recipe, diet- or menu-planning tools are country-specific and use national food composition data. For foods missing and foods from other countries it is likely information can be found through FoodEXplorer FoodEXplorer gives an idea on ranges of values, and variations. Compilers use it to increase confidence in their values Validation check for the national compilers on errors, wrong units etc Can be used as the data search tool for other countries and regions, e.g. AFROFOODS, EMR

6 FoodExplorer: Search options Search facility includes options to search based on: Original, English or scientific food name/ or a part name Food groups LanguaL thesauri facets (i.e. food groups and subgroups, food source, cooking method, treatment applied, preservation method, packaging medium, geographical regions) Chemical food components with value ranges, units, value types, method types, method indicator, reference type, reference and year of publication Search results from different datasets can be compared and also up to 15 foods downloaded and exported to, for example, Excel

14 Search results screen Displays the resulted food items, based on search criteria. As default, food items are sorted according to alphabetical English name order. 100 resulted food items fitting into one screen. Commands to scroll on the page, to move to the next, previous, last and first page and to sort the resulted food items based on each column content (ascending/descending sort order).

17 Downloading data: MY CART MY CART collects food items for download as: FDTP - Food Data Transport Package format (xml file structure - EuroFIR standard) Excel file format extended and shortened version

18 Overview: Detailed data for one food General food information (food name, original name and food ID). Pie graph with % distribution of total energy between fat, protein and carbohydrates. Food attributes: food group, edible portion, piece weight, special gravity, nitrogen factor, fatty acids factor, etc. Food components with chemical component parameters, grouped and sorted by main component groups. selected value, unit, matrix unit, value type, method type, method indicator, reference type, citation, publication date web address.

23 Data Quality FoodEXplorer data: as good as the data provided National databases have their own purposes and quality requirements In EuroFIR projects we worked towards a common quality approach, with: Description of the work flow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) EuroFIR and CEN standard for food and value documentation Compiler peer reviews to investigate the common quality level National compilers documented data according to the EuroFIR standard and provided the datasets for FoodEXplorer
