GOOD GOVERNANCE NEEDS BRAIN POWER
THE BRAIN The brain: the control centre for all bodily functions. It is the centre of the mind and higher functions that are a specific to humans. The human brain is so complex, so efficient in energy use and so powerful in its organization and intelligent design.
THE BRAIN...Limbic System Cerebral Cortex It is made up of millions of interconnected neurons which are capable of making decisions, thinking, loving and believing. Cerebrum
THE MATURE HUMAN BRAIN The mature human brain contains 100 billion neurons, which communicate with one another using a combination of electrical and chemical signals. Through its dendrites, it receives messages from other neuron. Each neuron has a long fiberlike structure (an axon) through which it sends messages to other nerve cells or to target organs
Neuron and its action
Human brain A section of human brain showing various brain parts The outermost layer the cerebral cortex has a role on voluntary movements, sensory perception, language, personality traits, thoughts, memory, reasoning and creativity. The cerebrum, the largest portion of the brain allows coordination of activities. The centremost structure of the brain make up the limbic system, the seat of the emotions, learning and motivation
CARING FOR THE BRAIN WELL PROTECTED, BUT VERY NEEDY!
Nutrients in the A car Needs fuel, oils, and other material to run properly. Brain Your brain Needs nutrients like glucose, vitamins minerals, proteins, water, enzyme and phytochemicals.
Nutrients They must gain entry to your body. They must be absorbed through the cell membrane to your brain. Starvation, poor diet, poor absorption, infection and alcoholism can cause deficiencies of these nutrients.
The brain is very specific! Glucose from carbohydrates The right proteins and fats to grow new connections Too little or too much of the necessary nutrients can affect the nervous system. For example: deficiency of vitamin A causes vision problems - night blindness; too much causes nausea, fatigue, and headaches.
