2 Benefits of Extruded Feeds for Horses The NutriRice Equine range has been developed to ensure we meet the needs of a range of horse feeding programs. Using selected premium ingredients, we have scientifically formulated a range of feeds that are based on rice and rice bran, quality protein sources, and specific minerals and vitamins added to supply a cool feed that supports the health and well-being of your horse. Our NutriRice range of horse feeds are extruded to improve nutrient availability and digestibility to help you get the best performance from our feeds and from your horse. Improved Starch Digestibility One of the most important effects of extrusion is the improvement in starch digestibility that occurs due to gelatinisation. When starch is gelatinised it increases the speed at which enzymes can break down the starch linkages, allowing more complete digestion in the small intestine and significantly reducing the potential for hindgut fermentation. Improved Protein Digestibility The extrusion process allows the enzymes that breakdown protein (proteases) to work more efficiently and therefore extract more protein from the feed for use by the horse. Improved Nutrient Digestibility The improved digestibility of nutrients in extruded feeds makes them ideal for all horses, but are of particular benefit for young growing horses and older horses where digestive efficiency may be lower or of reduced capacity. Excellent Palatability The extrusion process used to produce the NutriRice range of horse feeds gives them a sweet, nutty cooked aroma that is highly palatable to horses. Improved Saliva Production Extruded feeds tend to have a lower bulk density than conventional feeds. This means that your horse will produce more saliva when eating. Saliva contains bicarbonate that buffers the digestive system and helps reduce the potential for digestive upsets such as ulcers. Dental Care Feeds produced by extrusion process tend to be softer than other forms of feed which helps maintain your horses teeth in good condition for longer by slowing the rate of wear. Reduced Dust The extrusion process is great for producing dust free feed. When compared to pelleted feed, extruded nuts exhibit lower levels of dust and a higher level of durability. Extruded rice ranks as the most digestible grain in vitro, followed closely by extruded corn and steam rolled triticale (McGilchrist unpublished). The following feeding rates are intended as a guide only. The quantity individual horses require will depend on the quality of your pasture/hay, stage of training, intensity of exercise and body condition of your horse. These diets have been formulated based on the latest industry research and exceeds the requirements outlined in the Nutrient Requirements of Horses 6th rev.ed. NRC of the National Academies 2007.

8 Feeding Tips Suggested feeding rates should be used as a guide only. The type of feed and quantity individual horses require will depend on the quality of your pasture/hay, stage of training, intensity of exercise, body condition and metabolism of your horse. Introduce new feeds into your horse s ration gradually over a period of 1-2 weeks. Ensure horses always have access to clean, fresh water. Feed a minimum of 1% of your horse s body weight (BW) daily as roughage. If feeding over 0.5kg/100kg BW per day, divide the feeds into two or more smaller feeds.
