8 Inflammation - Friend or Foe? Inflammation is the body's response to injury The body's way of signaling the immune system to heal and repair damaged tissue, or defend itself against foreign invaders, such as viruses and bacteria. Without inflammation, wounds would fester, and infections could become deadly. But, if the inflammatory process goes on for too long, can promote chronic disease. 7

9 Inflammation Types Acute Inflammation: Bruises, burns, cuts Characterized by pain, redness, immobility swelling and heat. Will heal within a small amount of time Chronic Inflammation: Age related, environmental stress, allergies, asthma Gastrointestinal and high blood pressure On-going, pain does not go away 8
