Section 11 Toxicological Information Health Effects: No known toxic effects at recommended dose rates. Sodium selenate, an active ingredient in this product, is highly toxic in concentrated form. The range of selenium required to correct deficiency in mammals and that which can cause toxicity is relatively narrow. For example, while a daily intake of less than 20 µg of selenium has been shown to cause Keshan disease in adult humans in China 1, a maximum upper daily intake of 200 µg to avoid possible toxicity is recommended in the USA by the National Research Council s Food and Nutrition Board. Because the selenium concentration in the product is relatively low (0.01%) and the product is in liquid form, the risk to users is considered negligible when administering the product to animals as recommended on the label. In the event of deliberate or accidental oral administration with this product, adverse health effects could occur if a large amount is consumed or if continually used over a long period. 5 Creation Date: 17 October 2006 The Reference Dose (RfD) for selenium is milligrams per kilogram body weight per day (mg/kg/d) based on clinical selenosis in humans. The RfD is an estimate of a daily oral exposure to the human population (including sensitive subgroups), that is likely to be without appreciable risk of deleterious effects during a lifetime. It is not a direct estimator of risk but rather a reference point to gauge the potential effects. Acute: The following LD 50 s apply to certain active ingredients in the product. Inhaled: Absorption via inhalation is unlikely. Chronic: No chronic health effects expected. This product is designed to provide optimal levels of selenium, vitamins & amino acid to horses and dogs. No chronic health effects are expected for persons administering the product as directed on the label. Long term use of, or exposure to certain minerals, eg selenium and vitamins at levels above recommended daily allowances may lead to adverse health effects and/or nutrient imbalances. Reproductive Effects: No reproductive effects are expected when product is used according to label. However, sodium selenate at high levels may cause reproductive effects. Teratogenic and mutagenic effects: No teratogenic or mutagenic effects expected. Carcinogenic Effects: No carcinogenic effects expected. Toxicity to Other Domestic Species: No toxicity to other species expected with normal use. Section 12 Ecological Information Ecotoxicity: No environmental toxicity expected at concentrations of ingredients in Persistence / Degradability: Not expected to persist in the environment.
