1 Running Head: FAST FOOD PACKAGE LABELING 1 Why should fast food packaging be labeled with health warnings?
2 FAST FOOD PACKAGE LABELING 2 Why should fast food packaging be labeled with health warnings? Introduction Many consumers are not aware of what they are eating. The reason behind this problem is that there is no label on the food packaging. There should be a label over the fast food because this may let the consumer to decide whether the chosen product is good for them or not. A warning makes the consumer well aware of the product they are consuming (Danielle, 2008). Discussion Promoting Healthier Diets A perfectly labeled packaging of the fast food product must be promoted for ensuring healthier diets. This will aware the consumer with what they are eating, only if the packaging has a proper health warning on it. The packaging process comes in the marketing section of the product where the 4P s (Product, Place, Price, Packaging) must be followed effectively in order to label with healthier diets and warning labels (Danielle, 2008). Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that the packaging must have material information on its label to avoid any misleading statements and unhygienic additives for the particular consumer who is willing to consume (FDA, 2006). To avoid health problems, packaging must be labeled with warnings such as avoiding the intake of the product from small children, expiry dates or too much consumption of the product may lead to illness.
3 FAST FOOD PACKAGE LABELING 3 Necessity of Nutrition Facts These food labels will be very helpful in educating the consumer with the facts of nutrition s added in the particular food product that they have chosen. Nutrition labeling is very necessary for the raw products such as the fruits, dry fruits, vegetables, fish etc. The health and nutrition warnings on the product label makes the consumer aware of what nutrition he/she is consuming and whether the particular product is good for their health or not. By labeling warnings, people who are highly allergic to some additives such as eggs, tobacco, peanuts etc. can be saved (FDA, 2006). FDA makes sure the facts mentioned in the nutrition fact label are safe and true or not. A product without the warning labels is being rejected so that health problems can be prevented
4 FAST FOOD PACKAGE LABELING 4 and ensures that the consumers are made aware of the product that they are consuming (FDA, 2006). Side Effects of Fast Food Consumption People must be made well aware of the difference between the fast food (junk food) and healthy food. The health warning label must be mentioned with any high additives being added to its mixture for preventing allergic people to have such fast food. The consumer must be provided with perfect knowledge of the product in the nutrition facts label and alerted with a health warning from the consumption of the food. McDonalds have faced such a situation where a man was dying due to lack of health warning. The facts started turning violent because McDonalds Super Size Me burger had an excessive quantity of meat in it that made the consumer over dozed with the food and made him severely ill (Wonderslist, 2013). Conclusion Every fast food must be provided with the nutrition facts because that consists of all the ingredients involved in the food which the consumer will read and then consume it. The packed food is necessary to be labeled because the consumer won t know what the real picture of the fast food is in the sealed or canned food. An allergic person can lead to health problems or permanent illness which can harm his/her health (Wonderslist, 2013). FDA must make sure that the fast food being sold in the market, are all labeled with health warning and nutrition labels so that the consumer is well aware of the artificial additives or actual quantity of the supplement being added to the food product.
