KIDNEY STONES PREVENTION Introduction Now that you've had kidney stones and successfully; excreted them, I'm sure you don't ever want to have them again! Unfortunately, people who get kidney stones are much more likely to get them again. Some people fight a lifelong battle of kidney stones - forming them and passing them with no end in sight. Thankfully, there are things you can do that will help keep you healthy and kidney stone-free for the rest of your life. If you have passed a kidney stone, you are well aware that it is better to prevent them than to treat them! To best address your kidney stone situation and prevent any additional occurrences, it's important to find out the exact composition of your stone. Knowing the composition of your stones will allow you to receive more customized prevention tips. Before we look at preventative measures you can take, let s take one last moment to review the types of kidney stones and simple ways you can address their occurrence. TYPE OF STONE COMMENTS OTHER Cysteine Sulfur containing Dicalcium phosphate Also causes common arthritis, Largely decrease phosphate-rich food such
Monocalcium phosphate Tri-calcium phosphate Oxalate Uric acid** hardening of arteries, spurs Also causes common arthritis, hardening of arteries, spurs Also causes common arthritis, hardening of arteries, spurs Cause of lower back pain 95% of the time Also causes gout and arthritis as meat, cereals, pastas, and carbonated drinks. Increase fruit and vegetables and milk 2%, take magnesium oxide (300mg/day) and Vitamin B6 (250 mg/day). Drink two pints of water per day. Same as above Same as above Stones caused by oxalic acid in regular tea (15.6 mg oxalic acid per tea bags). Also eliminate cocoa drinks and chocolate of all kinds Meat produces urea and its by-products. It
is also highly acidforming which requires more calcium from living vegetable sources to neutralize these It's Time for You to Take Action. For the most part, you are in control of your own health. Kidney stones can be prevented and largely avoided with the following lifestyle modifications. Liquid Gold: At Home Urinalysis. Your urine is liquid gold as far as your health is concerned. A simple test of a urine specimen, called Urinalysis (UA), reflects your diet, how much and how hard you exercise, your age, and many aspects of your health. Urinalysis is a test to determine the components in the urine. While a UA is not a definitive test for stones, it can be used to make a better dietary and lifestyle choices to prevent future
stones by letting you check for good hydration, urine acidity and alkalinity and blood in the urine. If you have been a chronic sufferer of kidney stones you may benefit from performing at-home UA, which is quick and simple to do. You may purchase the same UA strips or dip-sticks that your doctor uses online or from your local drug store. Urinalysis Procedure: You will want to use a clean disposable cup or container. The best way to collect a urine sample is to hold the container mid-stream as you eliminate urine. Don t be afraid! It is your own urine and urine is sterile unless you have an infection. Within a few minutes of collecting the urine specimen dip the dipstick all the way into the urine in a very quick, split second motion. Drag the side of the dip-stick on the edge of the container to reduce excess liquid. The UA Strip container is marked with the values to help you read the results of the dipstick. There are a few tests that you will want to focus on for kidney stone prevention: specific gravity, ph, protein, and blood. Urine specific gravity in healthy people, a normal specific gravity can range between However, if you have suffered with a kidney stone, you want your urine on the dilute end of the spectrum at However, please note that during the treatment of a kidney stone you will be
drinking and eating a lot of fluid and your urine specific gravity will, and should be, much lower. ph is a reading of how acidic or alkaline the urine is. The value 7.0 is neutral and all higher numbers are alkaline while numbers under 7.0 are acidic. The normal reading for most people is between 5.5 and 6.5. Alkaline urine is a more hospitable environment for bacteria than acidic urine. Healthy people may have traces of blood and protein in their urine, but the presence of higher levels of these elements may indicate a kidney problem. Nitrites occur in urine during some types of bacterial infections. However, negative tests do not mean necessarily that there is no infection, as some bacteria do not convert nitrates to nitrite in the urine. False-positives and false-negatives are not unusual in dipstick UA. If you get a positive reading you may want to wait a few hours and rerun the test. If you are drinking enough water and taking further preventative steps but you still regularly test high on some of the UA tests, you may want to start applying this diet immediately. Drink Distilled Water with Lemon There is an abundance of evidence that proves one major cause of kidney stones is dehydration. Often, kidney stone sufferers live in the South region of the United States where the weather gets hot and humid. These conditions lead people to lose more water than they take in and the kidneys are affected negatively when this happens.
It is very important that you drink at least 8 full glasses of water every day. A good guideline is 16 ounces of water every two hours that you are awake. Also, there is even more encouraging benefits to your health when the water you drink is distilled. Distilled water is, as Dr. Weil puts it, "water that has been turned into steam so its impurities are left behind. The steam is then condensed to make pure water. The process of distillation kills and removes virtually all bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, and other organic and inorganic contaminants. Once distilled, the water is as pure as water can reasonably be." There are some myths that distilled water is not good for you, but that is nonsense. It is the best kind of water there is: pure. And, if you add a twist of lemon to your water, we can assure you that will also help you from ever forming another kidney stone for the rest of your life. A good indicator as to whether you are drinking enough water is the color of your urine. If it is bright yellow or dark, you need more water. It should be almost clear. Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink water. Keep a bottle of water with you at all times. Of course, you can always check your urine s specific gravity to test
how well your are hydrated. Change Your Diet Your diet obviously plays an important role in your health and well-being. This is true with prevention of kidney stones as well. If you are unsure about your diet, or what your nutritional requirements are you can get started on this healthy and kidney safe diet. Avoid drinking caffeinated beverages including colas, most teas, and coffee. Caffeine seems to increase urinary calcium that can lead to developing stones. Oxalate stones are often referred to as the Healthy Person s Stones. Look at the below list of foods high in oxalates and you will see why: string beans beets blackberries
dark leafy greens draft beer eggplant grits nuts okra rhubarb soy products strawberries summer squash sweet potatoes wheat bran wheat germ You do not need to, and should not, remove these items completely from your diet. Just remember to eat them in moderation. Because fruits and veggies alkalize the urine, and oxalic stones rarely form in more alkaline urine, start eating large quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables. Focus particularly on white and red radish, both of which are natural kidney cleansers. Remember that phosphate crystals are made when you eat too much phosphate containing food. In general, reduce the amount of excess phosphorous you consume. Your favorite soda and other carbonated drinks often contain high quantities of phosphorous (in the form of phosphoric acid. Whereas we recommend it for breaking down the stones in our Kidney Stone Removal Grocery Cures, it is best to avoid continued consumption of food or drinks high in phosphorous in daily life. Phosphate levels are high in meats, breads, cereals, pastas, and carbonated drinks. Those foods should be eating in limited moderation.
Drink some good cranberry juice. It helps maintain your urinary tract by keeping the ph balanced. Make sure it is unsweetened. Exercise Get Moving Don t Be Lazy! OK, that title might sound a bit harsh, but research shows that people who live a sedentary lifestyle are more prone to develop kidney stones. You've heard this a million times, but exercise is good for you. What are you waiting for? Just go do it! Start by walking around the block, then increase that more as your body gets used to it. We recommend using a stepometer (pedometer). Try walking 10,000 steps per day. The benefits you ll see are more than just kidney stone prevention! You'll feel better, have more energy, lose weight, and will stimulate other areas of fun in your life! Remember, each step you take is one step closer to no kidney stones ever again!
Medications to Avoid If you are taking Diamox or Crixivan, please talk to your doctor about changing prescriptions. These particular drugs have been associated with an increase in kidney stone formation. Here are a few more helpful tips to help make your life more enjoyable and health-filled: Every once in a while, trade in your lemon water for Lemonade. If you're at a restaurant, ask for a water and a Glass full of about 5-6 lemon slices. Then, squeeze them into your water, add some sweetener, and voila you've got free lemonade! You can use sugar or a sugar substitute for a great tasting alternative to water. Make your exercise fun! Try new things: walking in new places. Explore new areas of your neighborhood or town. Walk down different roads or paths. Take a look at the surroundings for a change, instead of just focusing on the road. Go golfing and carry your clubs instead of riding in a cart. Take a class at the gym or local recreation department. Buy a pedometer! Practice good general preventative health care including a balanced diet, hydration, and exercise to improve your overall health and reduce your chance for kidney stones. Remember where all good things come from. God loves you and wants you to know it.
Don t Forget Any of These Preventative Measures! Right now, the pain of kidney stones is probably fresh in your mind. But down the road, you may slowly forget how awful the pain was. Be sure you never have to go through that pain again by following the above steps for the rest of your life! Yours for excellent health, P.S : Guaranteed to Work!
