1 Purdue University Department of Nutrition Science FN Medical Nutrition Therapy Course Syllabus, Spring 2011 Course Goal: Application of the Nutrition Care Process in various disease states and conditions to prepare students for supervised practice programs. Course Objectives: To meet selected DPD Knowledge Requirements as established by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics through lectures, laboratories, assignments, projects, readings, presentations, quizzes and examinations. DPD Knowledge Requirements (KR): KR 1.1.a: Expected Learning Outcome: Students are able to demonstrate how to locate, interpret, evaluate and use professional literature to make ethical evidence-based practice decisions. KR 1.1.b: Expected Learning Outcome: Students are able to use current information technologies to locate and apply evidence-based guidelines and protocols, such as the ADA Evidence Analysis Library, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, National Guideline Clearinghouse Web sites. KR 2.3.a: Expected Learning Outcome: Students are able to locate, understand and apply established guidelines to a professional practice scenario. KR 2.3.b: Expected Learning Outcome: Students are able to identify and describe the roles of others with whom the Registered Dietitian collaborates in the delivery of food and nutrition services. KR 3.1.a: Expected Learning Outcome: Students are able to use the nutrition care process to make decisions, to identify nutrition-related problems and determine and evaluate nutrition interventions, including medical nutrition therapy, disease prevention and health promotion. KR 4.2.b: Expected Learning Outcome: Students are able to develop outcome measures, use informatics principles and technology to collect and analyze data for assessment and evaluate data to use in decision-making Times and Locations: Lecture Monday, Wednesday, 9:30 am Room: WTHR 172 Friday Laboratory Tuesday or Thursday 7:30 am to 10:20 am Room: SMTH 118 May use old HTM cafeteria or old JPR room at times - TBA Special note: When guest speakers present during lecture hour, all or part of the lab session will be used as a lecture time. This is a courtesy for the guest speakers so they only need to present to the class one time.

If you are unable to attend a class, it is your responsibility to obtain notes and other missed information from a classmate. 10 points will be awarded for attendance on Friday, March 9, Turning in/ Returning Assignments: Assignments are to be printed and turned in on the due date in class. Your graded assignments will be returned using a mailbox system. The mailbox will be located in Stone 220 and will be accessible from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. You are expected to check your mailbox weekly. On Monday of the fifteenth week of classes, students will receive an official from evaluation administrators with a link to the online evaluation site. Students will have two weeks to complete this evaluation. Your participation in this evaluation is an integral part of this course. Your feedback is vital to improving education at Purdue University. 4 Grading Scale A+ = 98 to 100% A = 93 to 97% A- = 90 to 92% B+ = 87 to 89 % B = 83 to 87% B- = 80 to 82% C+ = 77 to 79 % C = 73 to 77 % C- = 70 to 72 % D = 65 to 69 % F = less than 65 % Incomplete grades will be given in accordance with University Regulations. Grades will be posted on Blackboard. All assignments must be completed in order for a student to receive a passing grade. Assignments are expected to be word-processed unless noted otherwise in the instructions. Each assignment is expected to be handed in during class on its due date. Assignments handed in late will have points deducted unless the instructor has given prior approval. Please notify the instructor immediately if you have a grade discrepancy or if a grade has been inaccurately recorded so the problem can be addressed in a timely manner. Make-up Exams: Make-up exams will not be given after a scheduled exam, except for major illnesses or extenuating circumstances, both requiring documentation. If a student needs to arrange a make-up exam, please be aware that the make-up exam can be different from the regularly scheduled exam. Failure to notify the instructor by 5:00 pm on the day of the scheduled exam will forfeit a student s right for consideration of a make-up exam. Contact the instructor either in person or by telephone or as to the reason for the absence. A message may be left at (Main 2 nd floor office, secretary Debbie). Cheating: Students are required to follow the University Student Code of Honor and all student policies and procedures. Please see your student handbook for a complete transcript of University policies. Any student guilty of cheating will be disciplined according to University Regulations. Extra Credit: There will be opportunities for extra credit announced during the semester. Extra credit will be available for attending selected seminars. Special Note: 1.
