Advantages Minor wound, minimal complications, no risk of paralysis. Hospitalization period 10 days Spondylodesis To fix 2-3 spinal bones with metal by inserting artificial disc after removal of disc. Advantages Increased in spinal stability, low recurrence rate Hospitalization period 14 days Artificial disc replacement Used for the cervical vertebrae only, removal of disc and inserting artificial disc then fix it Advantages Maintain spinal motility, flexibility and stability. Degenerative deformity correction, minimizing surgical pain Hospitalization period 7 days 8

16 FAQ Q When should I get Joint replacement surgery? A Patients with severe degenerative arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or degenerative arthritis acquired by post-trauma require the artificial joint surgery. To reduce pain and allow joints to function by inserting an artificial joint made of durable special alloys and polymer materials. Q Why do I need rehabilitation after joint replacement surgery? A Rehabilitation is essential to restore muscle loss due to hospitalization and strengthen the muscles around the joints to support the weight of the joints. Q What exercise or lifestyle should I keep using artificial joints longer in my daily life? A The post- operative management is as important as surgery itself. The life span of artificial joints can be extended depend on post-operative management. It is important to keep the rehabilitation movement taught in the hospital after the operation. In addition to rehabilitation exercise, exercise such as swimming or bike is also helpful, but it is good to avoid exercise on heavy impact or heavy lifting. Q How to rehabilitate cervical disc surgery? A Most of the cervical disc surgery uses a method called osteodesis, unlike the lumbar disc surgery. Although it takes longer stabilizing period, it has the advantage of no recurrence. It is necessary to wear a brace for about 2-3 months as bone fusion should be completed. You do not have to limit your exercise as long as you avoid bending neck forward and turning neck suddenly. The exercise therapy is rather limited as exercise itself is likely to overturn the joints of the neck. Active neck movement is necessary from the point of completion of bone fusion, and the posture in computer work exceeding one hour should be avoided. 14
17 Foreign patient Evaluation Dear all of Himchan s family. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to chief director, my doctor, Seung-Jun Park, and rehabilitation center staff of hard work, careful attention, and care. I am a 58-year-old pensioner living in Kazakhstan. I met you for the first time in a meeting in Almaty last April. A director of Himchan hospital examed me and recommended for treatment. I started treatment in Himchan hospital from September 4th. It was painful for a long time, so I was happy when the director urged me to get treatment in Himchan hospital. I tried everything I could do in Kazakhstan, but it was useless. I finally got a knee surgery in Himchan hospital, and now I recommend all my friends to have treatment in Korea. I will not forget about all the medical conditions, the high quality of medical staff, and the kindness you have given me. I hope you will continue to thrive for Korean and foreigners alike.
18 Kuptsova Annaida I would like to appreciate the hospital staff for their delicacy, interest and outstanding professionalism. The biggest thanks will be given to my doctor. He is a brilliant and skilled expert. How wonderful nurses were... I could feel warm heart and skillful hand. I also appreciate your kindness and understanding for two coordinators, Hee-Won Seo and Olga. It was lucky to have surgery and rehabilitation at Himchan hospital. I would like to send best regards to the staff in hospital. I really appreciate your hard work. Thanks for your professionalism, understanding, patience and kindness. I would like to express my gratitude to my doctor, Mr Dong-Hyun Seo. He is a great Orthopaedic surgeon with warm heart to care for patient. I could enjoy the life of joy again because of his skillful hands. I pray that God will look after you! Especially, I want to point out that Hee-Won Seo, coordinator, helped us to stay in hospital. She gave me a good image about Himchan hospital for the first time, and eventually she made me to decide to have a surgery. I appreciate again Hee-Won Seo, doctor, and nurses who always take care of us.
