2 Superficial Front Line the Protector & Superficial Back Line the Lifter The Lateral Line Functional: Lateral bending Structural: Lateral bends In between: Lateral stability (outer) The Spiral Line - a human invention All around the town 2

3 The Spiral Line is easier for some than for others The Spiral Line crosses the midline twice - once between the shoulder blades, and once over the navel. The Upper Spiral Line Splenius capitis LIne of attachment of scapula Internal oblique Rectus abdominis and fascia Rhomboids External oblique Serratus anterior 3

4 Upper Spiral Line (Profound) The Upper Spiral Line stretches from one hip around the contralateral ribs to the ipsilateral side of the head. The splenius (the bandage) lies underneath the trapezius. It s the only major oak tree muscle in the back 4

5 Splenius capitis attachment - the upper end of the Spiral Line The scapula floats in the Spiral Line 5

6 The Upper Spiral Line Splenius capitis LIne of attachment of scapula Internal oblique Rectus abdominis and fascia Rhomboids External oblique Serratus anterior External oblique interdigitates with the serratus anterior 6

7 The Spiral Line crosses from one external oblique to the contralateral internal oblique - forming an x from ribs to hips So which Spiral Line in this gentleman is shorter? In front, it s the left UPPER SPIRAL LINE RED FLAGS Head shift or rotation One shoulder more forward Rib cage shifts and rotations Imbalance in rib to hip X 7

8 The lower Spiral Line - the jumprope The first track of the lower Spiral Line is the tensor fasciae latae, going into the anterior iliotibial tract The anterior ITT clearly continues into the tibialis anterior fascia - and thus to the inner arch. 8

9 Others have pointed out the sling between the tibialis anterior and fibularis (peroneus) longus under the arches. And the fibularis longus goes right on up to the fibular head - the next track in the line. But the sling can be dissected to show the tendons connected to each other over the cuneiform - 1st metatarsal joint. 9

10 Creating a myofascial link from the pelvis over the knee to the arches and back again The Arches The conjunction between the tibialis anterior and the fibularis longus comes at a very vulnerable part of the arch system. 10

11 Remember that inversion - eversion: 1) Takes place at the sub-talar joint, and 2) Can mean the foot moves on the lower leg, or the lower leg moves on the foot. From the lower leg the Spiral Line moves up to the biceps femoris - the lateral hamstring Thus connecting the lateral arch to the sacroiliac joint 11

12 The 4th Hamstring The functional and fascial connection between biceps short head and adductor magnus Knee Tracking can also be a function of shortness in the Spiral Line From here on up the Spiral Line follows the same track as the Back Line - though it can cross at the sacrum. 12
