A common misconception is that effective treatments for this are currently unavailable. Wounds 1998;10(6): Limitations A multidisciplinary approach should be considered for the management of neuropathic conditions of the foot. Not all patients are candidates for the devices. The devices are contraindicated in physical conditions which preclude adequate implant support or retard healing such as blood supply impairment, insufficient bone quality or quantity, previous infection, obesity and mental conditions that preclude cooperation with the rehabilitation regimen. The appropriate type and size of device should be selected for the patient. The surgical use of the implants and external fixator should be performed only by experienced surgeons with specific training in the use of these products because this is a technically demanding procedure presenting a risk of serious injury to the patient. As with any orthopaedic implant system, instruments and associated accessories there are inherent risks with the use of the products. Possible complications with the use of the orthopaedic fixations devices include non-unions, additional bone fractures, infection, nerve, muscle and vascular damage, failure to heal, implant dislodgement, and device bending or breakage.
