1 Children s Health Today 2015 Biographies DAY 1: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13, :30-09:30 Dr. Douglas G. Matsell Dr. Matsell is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1979 and from McGill University Medical School in He was recruited to the University of British Columbia and the British Columbia Children s Hospital as Head of the Division of Nephrology in Dr. Matsell has directed an active research program in fetal kidney disease, abnormal kidney development, and fetal obstructive kidney disease. His current clinical interest is in the development of standardized, evidence-based, site-specific clinical pathways for the management of common childhood kidney disorders. Dr. Cherry Mammen Dr. Cherry Mammen is a Pediatric Nephrologist at British Columbia s Children s Hospital (BCCH) and Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He completed his undergraduate degree at Dalhousie University in 1999 and graduated from medical school at Memorial University in After completing his pediatric residency training at UBC in 2006, he joined the pediatric nephrology fellowship program at BCCH and completed a Masters degree in Health Sciences as a member of the Clinician Investigator Program at UBC (2010). Dr. Mammen has been an attending nephrologist at BCCH since His primary clinical research interest is in the field of pediatric acute kidney injury (AKI) and is involved in several AKI epidemiology studies at the local, national, and international level. More recently, Dr. Mammen has been highly involved in a variety of quality assurance projects including the development of clinical pathways for various pediatric nephrology conditions including childhood nephrotic syndrome.
2 10:00-10:30 Dr. Debra Millar Dr. Millar is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at U.B.C Her clinical practice includes adult obstetrics and gynecology along with pediatric and adolescent gynecology. Dr. Millar received her medical and undergraduate degrees from the University of British Columbia. After a short time in general practice she went on to complete a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, again at the University of B.C. Medical School. She then completed a clinical fellowship training program at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. Dr. Millar leads the group of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecologists at U.B.C. in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is the Acting Head of the Subspecialists Group of Obstetrics and Gynecologists in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at U.B.C. 10:30-11:15 Dr. Linda Casey Dr. Casey trained first as a pediatrician, and then undertook further training in Experimental Medicine Nutrition & Metabolism. From 2001 onward, her work has focused exclusively on nutrition and feeding problems in pediatric patients. She is a founding member of the Children s Intestinal Rehabilitation Program Network which provides care for children with intestinal failure across Western Canada. For many years, she worked in Edmonton as a clinician, researcher and a teacher of medical and nutrition students. In 2012, she moved to Vancouver to become the Director of the Complex Nutrition & Feeding Service at BC Children s Hospital and is thoroughly enjoying the work, the amazing team she works with, and the beautiful surroundings and climate here in Vancouver. 11:15-11:45 Dr. Jan Dutz Dr. Dutz is a Professor at UBC and a scientist with the Child and Family Research Institute and the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute. He received MD degree from Queen s University. He continued with postgraduate training in
3 Internal Medicine and Rheumatology (University of Toronto) and Dermatology (UBC). Dr. Dutz has been the recipient of numerous honors and grants for research and investigation, and has co-authored over 50 scientific journal publications and 50 journal abstracts, as well as several chapters in books. Dr. Dutz s practice includes a Connective Tissue Disease clinic, and he is one of a few physicians in North America to be board certified and maintain active clinical interest in both Rheumatology and Dermatology. He has been awarded for his teaching and in the connections he brings to linking basic science discoveries and clinical dermatology. His current interests are skin immunization, melanoma, diabetes, and alopecia areata. Dr. Dutz is the Coordinator of Resident Research for the UBC Department of Dermatology and Skin Science, and the focus of his laboratory has an independent laboratory is to study the skin immune system and its participation in autoimmune disease. 12:45-13:45 Dr. Deepak Manhas Dr. Deepak Manhas is a first-year fellow at the Centre for Health Education Scholarship (CHES). He is currently undertaking his Masters of Health Professions Education through University Maastricht. He has a background in Pediatrics and Neonatal Intensive Care and would like to focus his research on the effective use of simulation education on the resuscitation of newborns and infants. Deepak was born and raised in Vancouver and has been a long-term UBC student, completing his Bachelor of Science, undergraduate medical training, pediatrics residency, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship here. He appreciates all of the knowledge and teaching that he has received and hopes to have a positive impact on future medical trainees. Deepak also has a passion for international health and has participated in multiple programs to aid with medical treatment and medical education in developing countries. In his free time, Deepak enjoys travelling and finding really good places to eat.
4 13:45-14:15 Dr. Ashley Ko Dr. Ashley Ko attended medical school and completed her residency training in Ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia. She furthered her training with a Fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus at the University of Iowa. Dr. Ko s special interests lie in the pediatric population and adult strabismus. Clinical Instructor, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, UBC 14:15-14:45 Benjamin Wong Benjamin Wong has been with Richmond Addiction Service Society since 2008 while also running a small private practice in the treatment of behavioral addictions. Prior to addictions work, he held positions in vocational rehabilitation and school counseling. He advocates for parental involvement from early infancy in a child s development, and the responsible use of electronic screens to enhance learning, social skills, resilience and mental health fitness. He and his young family call White Rock, BC home 14:45-15:15 Dr. James Bergman Dr. Bergman is a clinical assistant professor Dept of Dermatology UBC. He practices Pediatric dermatology and Pediatric allergy at the at the Pediatric Allergy Dermatology centre in Vancouver. Dr Bergman completed his training in Pediatrics and Pediatric Allergy and immunology at the University of Manitoba. He subsequently completed training in Dermatology at UBC and a fellowship in Pediatric dermatology at UCSD. 15:45-16:30 Dr. Barbara Fitzgerald Barb Fitzgerald is a Developmental Pediatrician who has spent her career working with vulnerable children. She directed a inner city school developmental assessment program for 15 years, set up a Global Health
5 Initiative Program for medical students to work with vulnerable families in Vancouver and has worked at Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children seeing children with complex learning and behavioural issues, mostly in the context of prenatal substance exposure. She also works as the consultant Developmental Pediatrician at Alderwood Family Development Centre where she treats children with complex behavioural and mental health concerns. She founded a charity called Mom to Mom that pairs women with moms living in poverty for mentorship and support. She was the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at UBC where she started an award-winning Medical Student Wellness Initiative. She teaches child development in the UBC medical school. She is the mother of four wonderful young adults and has been married to a very patient psychiatrist for 30 years. 16:30-17:00 Dr. Lori Tucker Dr. Lori Tucker completed medical school at Tufts University School of Medicine, and pediatric training at The Floating Hospital for Children-New England Medical Center. She completed a pediatric rheumatology fellowship at The Floating Hospital for Children-New England Medical Center, and remained there as an Assistant Professor in Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology. Dr. Tucker is currently Clinical Associate Professor in Pediatrics, UBC, and Division of Rheumatology, BC Children s Hospital. She is the Chair of the Pediatric Section of the Canadian Rheumatology Association, a member of the Executive Council of The Canadian Rheumatology Association, as well as active in the Arthritis Alliance of Canada and the Canadian Alliance for Pediatric Rheumatology Investigators. She has been a Board member of The Arthritis Society of BC and Yukon, and currently is a Board member of Cassie and Friends: A Society for Children with Juvenile Arthritis and Other Rheumatic Diseases. 17:00-17:30 Dr. Jean-Pierre Chanoine Dr. Chanoine is Clinical Professor and Head of the Endocrinology and Diabetes Unit at BCCH. His academic interests include the clinical aspects of childhood obesity and the promotion of pediatric endocrine care in low and middle income countries through capacity building and mentoring.

DAY 2: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14, :00-09:30 Dr. Stephen Noseworthy Dr. Stephen Noseworthy is a Pediatric Emergentologist and and Clinical Asst Professor of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine. He received his training at Memorial University of Newfoundland and the University of Ottawa. Prior to moving to BC 2 years ago he was an Asst Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Ottawa and was the Medical Director of Trauma at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). He has a special interest in medical education and particularly values simulation as an educational tool. At CHEO he developed and directed the simulation program for the Pediatric Emergency Department and had a special affinity for bringing trauma simulation education to community hospitals in the Ottawa region. In addition, he has presented simulation exercises at local and national conferences and via telemedicine in the province of Ontario. He thoroughly enjoys maintaining a combined community and tertiary practice as a General Pediatrician at Langley Memorial Hospital and a Pediatric Emergency Medicine specialist at BC Women's and Children's. 09:30-10:00 Dr. S. Murthy Korada Dr. Korada is a Pediatrician / Pediatric Endocrinologist working at Ridge Meadows Hospital and Surrey Memorial Hospital. He moved from the UK to BC in 2010 and completed his Royal College certifications in Pediatrics and in Endocrinology and Metabolism.
7 10:00-10:30 Dr. Laura Stewart Dr. Stewart is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at UBC and a Pediatric Endocrinologist at BCCH. 11:00-12:00 Dr. Todd Sorokan Dr. Todd Sorokan is a Neonatologist and Pediatrician in New Westminster, where he has practiced for 12 years. He is the past president of the BCPS and has sat on the BCMA Board. He is interested in economics and ensuring Pediatricians are appropriately paid for the work they do. Dr. Aven Poynter Dr. Aven Poynter has been a consulting Paediatrician with a practice in general Paediatrics and Paediatric Respirology in Langley for 28 years. In her current role as President of the BCPS, she is trying to learn the intricacies of economics from Todd and Bill. 13:00-13:30 Dr. Daniel Metzger Dr. Metzger is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at UBC and a Pediatric Endocrinologist at BCCH 13:30-14:00 Dr. Akash Sinha Dr. Sinha is a Pediatric Endocrinologist practicing in Abbotsford Regional Hospital since He did my pediatric endocrine training and his MD/PhD in the UK, followed by a pediatric endocrine fellowship at BCCH.
8 14:00-14:30 Dr. John Welch Dr. Welch is an Australian Pediatric Endocrinologist who completely his training in Australia and did a further fellowship at the BCCH, particularly to gain experience with Dr Dan Metzger in transgender health. Following his fellowship he has been working until recently as a Staff Endocrinologist at BCCH. 14:30-15:00 Dr. Diane Jensen Dr. Jensen is an endocrinology fellow at BCCH. She completed her undergraduate and post-graduate medical training in Brisbane, Australia. She is also currently completing a PhD in the area of treatment of adolescent obesity. 15:15-15:45 Dr. Shazhan Amed Dr. Amed is a Pediatric Endocrinologist at BCCH, a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at UBC, and an Associate Clinician Scientist at the CFRI. Her research interests include: describing epidemiological trends of T1D and T2D in children and youth and the prevention of child-onset obesity and type 2 diabetes. 15:45-16:30 Dr. Dina Panagiotopoulos Dr. Panagiotopoulos is a Clinical Professor in the UBC Department of Pediatrics and a Pediatric Endocrinologist at BCCH, where she serves as the Medical Director for both the Type 2 Diabetes/Insulin Resistance Clinic and the Provincial Mental Health Metabolic Program 16:30-17:00 Dr. Daniel Metzger Dr. Metzger is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at UBC and a Pediatric Endocrinologist at BCCH.
