1 UBC Dept. of Psychiatry Developmental Disorders Program Report: 15 th March, Program Description: In April, 2008, an independent Developmental Disorders (DD) Program was established in the Dept. of Psychiatry at UBC; distinct from both Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry, but with components from both areas. The term Developmental Disorders is an umbrella term, which refers to disorders of the developing nervous system, resulting in impaired intellectual and/ or adaptive functioning. This includes children, youth and adults with Intellectual Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and related neurodevelopmental disorders. Compared to the general population, individuals with developmental disorders have a higher rate of psychiatric disorders, yet are typically under diagnosed, misdiagnosed, and/or underserved. It is imperative that we aim to improve mental health outcomes for these individuals, their families, and caregivers. 2. Objectives: As one of only three such Programs in a Department of Psychiatry in Canada, we aim to be a national leader and centre of distinction in Training, Research and Education in the Psychiatry of Developmental Disorders across the life span. At UBC, we act as an umbrella body pulling together didactic and clinical teaching in Developmental Disorders to Psychiatry residents in Adult Chronic care as well as in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. We aim to be a resource and link with other faculties in the University who provide teaching in related areas as well as with related family and community based organizations in this field. 3. New Developments in the past 2 years: Development of a three year strategic/operational plan on May 6 th, prepared with the assistance of Bobbi Noble Consulting at a retreat attended by key stakeholders in the field in BC. Attendees included: Dr Robin Friedlander, Director of the Developmental Disorders Program, Dr Tony Bailey,Child Psychiatry Research Chair, Dr Pat Mirenda, Professor Dept. of Educational Psychology UBC, Paula Grant, Director Quality Assurance CLBC, Denyse Houde, Program Director Mental Health and Addictions FHA, Dr Elena Lopez, Division of

4 Postgraduate: Faculty members continue to provide training as follows: Psychiatry Residents: approximately 15 hours of didactic seminar based teaching at UBC and 28 hours of supervised clinical teaching in the DDMHS community based teams. Psychiatry Residents doing their Child Psychiatry rotation also get clinical supervision in Developmental Disorders including Autism and Intellectual Disabilities. Family Practice Residents receive one lecture in their PGY1 year. In the 2011 year, we also provided supervision to pediatric residents and fellows. CME: The Program provides a Monthly education Rounds in association with the Neuropsychiatry Clinic at BCCH. These lectures occur on the first Tuesday of each month at 0900 and are videoconferenced across the Province of BC. The Program has contracted with MCFD to provide training to MCFD CYMH and CYSN Professionals throughout the Province. Conferences: The Program arranges a biannual conference titled Health and Wellbeing in Developmental Disabilities. The last conference was in September 2010 and the next conference is planned for November Specific Objectives for the future: Key directions and goals identified in our recent strategic planning meeting are as follows: 1. Develop the program structure, vision and mandate, secure funding for administrative support and website maintenance and identify and expand faculty. 2. Provide and expand training in the field province wide via enriching and expanding the residency training experience in Psychiatry, identifying current training to medical students and family practice residents and assessing the need for training in developmental disorders and offering practicum experiences for trainees in allied professions. 3. Promote research via an interest group and mentorship. 4. Increase clinical experience opportunities via exploring using the PAC, DSRF and Pacific Autism Family Centre as training and research sites and promoting existing training opportunities within the Provincial DDMHS teams. 5. Build awareness and develop strategic alliances particularly with family based organizations, the BCMA and Child Health BC.
5 Respectfully submitted by Robin Friedlander, Program Director, March 15 th 2012.
