6 Why using Ultrasound to measure Bone? =>Ultrasound is an elastic wave. During its propagation in bone, it creates a micro-vibration which stimulates the bone mechanically. The bone response to this wave is then measured by the system. This vibration can be regarded as a simulation of fracture, with much lower amplitude. This explains why ultrasound is able to predict fracture risk, giving information on both bone density and microarchitecture. => Ultrasound is a radiation-free technique: there is no limitation in use, in particular for children and pregnant women.

8 Medilink solution PEGASUS Smart PEGASUS is a Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS) device which measures bone properties at the calcaneus (bone of the heel, also named os calcis ). Its main application is the detection and follow-up of osteoporosis, but it can also be used to assess bone status in pregnant women or children.

9 2 Modes of use Stand alone mode Connected mode

10 Stand alone mode The stand-alone mode allows you to use PEGASUS without any external device (except external power source). You can enter basic parameters such as age, ethnicity, or sex with a simple interface to perform a quick examination. Results are displayed on the LCD screen, and can be printed with the embedded thermal printer. You can then store the results, in order to save them later on a computer.

T-Score: is the difference in Standard Deviations between a normal patient of twenty years old (Young Adult) and these of the patient examined. Z-Score: is the difference between the result of a patient and the mean value of a normal subject of the same age, expressed in number of standard deviations of the reference group. Width of the calcaneus (based on a ultrasound echo measurement). Information to be added by hand: Patient s name.

14 Connected mode The connected mode offers you a more complete interface by operating PEGASUS with computer software via an USB cable. In this mode, you can perform the same tasks than in stand-alone mode, but you can also manage a patient database, save the results stored in stand-alone mode, and print a complete report on an external printer.
