3 Overview The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) accredits residency and fellowship programs for physical therapists through the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency & Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE), a 7-member body appointed by the APTA Board of Directors. Program Data Since APTA began accrediting residency and fellowship programs in 1999, the growth of programs has continued to increase steadily through the years, with a sharper rate of increase noted since (Figure 1) Figure 1. Growth Chart of Accredited Programs Total Residencies Total Fellowships Total Programs Total Residencies Total Fellowships Total Programs Of the 296 programs that held accreditation as of December 31, 2017, Table 1 outlines the representation by area of practice. 4 The following chart (Table 2) provides the distribution of programs that held accreditation in Each program is represented once within the table and the location is based on the address on file for that program. This distribution does not account for programs that are multi-site and operate in different regions of the county. Table 2. 5 Program Applicant Trends In September 2013, APTA established the Residency/Fellowship Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (RF- PTCAS) in an effort to simplify the application process for prospective residents and fellows as well as to facilitate the admission process for residency and fellowship education programs. The RF-PTCAS admissions cycle runs from October 1 through August 31 of the following year. Tables 4 through 7 outline the growth in program participation in RF-PTCAS, applicants, and applications to residency and fellowship programs. Table 4. RF-PTCAS Program, Applicant, and Application Trends Admissions Cycle # RF-PTCAS Programs Participation Rate # RF-PTCAS Applications % Change # of Unique RF-PTCAS Applicants % Change Applications to Applicant Ratio % % % % % % % % % % 2.1 Table 5. Total Program, Applicant, and Application Trends Admissions Cycle Total Programs Total Applications % Change Total Unique Applicants 1 % Change Applications to Applicant Ratio Not available Not available Not available % % % % Please note that the number of unique RF-PTCAS applicants and the number of unique non-cas applicants will not equal the total unique applicants as some applicants applied to both participating and non-participating RF-PTCAS programs. Those applicants were considered unique for their first RF-PTCAS application submitted and again for their first non-cas application submitted. However, these applicants were only counted once within the total unique applications for all applications filed (both RF-PTCAS and non-cas programs). 17 *there were no unknown admission outcomes during the admission cycle. During the analysis, total residency program positions were compared against the number of unique applicants that were accepted and matriculated into a residency program along with the number of unique applicants that programs identified as qualified applicants but no available position. The results demonstrate that during the application cycle, there were not enough residency positions within the acute care, cardiovascular and pulmonary, faculty, pediatric, sports, and would management specialties and that additional program growth is needed in these areas. In contrast, the orthopaedic residency area demonstrated that is had a surplus of 151 positions meaning there were more positions available than qualified and/or interested applicants. Figure 5 summarizes the deficits and surplus positions for each residency area of practice. Figure 5. At the same time, other residency programs received an exhaustive amount of applications and were not able to accept all qualified applicants as all positions at that program were filled. Reasoning as to why qualified applicants did not apply to programs with unfilled positions has yet to be determined. Future analysis on applicant trends related to these gaps would be useful. Fellowship-Specific Applicant Outcomes During the application cycle, there were a total of 54 fellowship programs that held accreditation or candidate status. Of the 3098 applications filed during the application cycle, 459 of those applications were fellowship-specific applications. 20 During the analysis, total fellowship program positions were compared against the number of unique applicants that were accepted and matriculated into a fellowship program along with the number of unique applicants that programs identified as qualified applicants but no available position. The results demonstrate that during the application cycle, there were not enough fellowship positions within the hand therapy, higher education leadership, movement system, performing arts, sports division 1, and upper extremity athlete subspecialties and that additional program growth is needed in these areas. In contrast, the orthopaedic manual physical therapy fellowship area demonstrated that is had a surplus of 196 positions meaning there were more positions available than qualified and/or interested applicants. From 2006 through 2013, examination passing rates were provided in summary and not by specialty area. Table 11 provides a comparison of the board certification examination passing rates for first time test takers for those individuals who were residency graduates versus non-residency graduates.
