1 INTERN SEMINAR SCHEDULE Fridays 8:00-9:20 unless otherwise noted September 2 Purple Onion September 9 September 16 September 23 Getting to Know You Breakfast An informal opportunity for the two cohorts of interns from /CAPS and U of MN/ to get to know each other over shared breakfast. Intern Development Issues: Part I Steve Maurer, Ph.D., L.P. Address typical developmental issues that interns experience during the early, middle, and late stages of internship, within the broader system of a university counseling center. Brief Therapy Jerry Shih, Ph.D., LP Interns will reflect on their preferences for short- or long-term psychotherapy and consider client-driven rationale for brief therapy. Relevance of brief therapy to college students and two case studies of typical college student scenarios will be discussed. Presentation does not attempt to survey all orientations to brief theory but will highlight points from Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, and Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy. Counseling Students in Academic Difficulty Glenn Hirsch, Ph.D., Psy.D. This presentation describes an original, integrated model counselors can use to help college students discover their own abilities to succeed. The model prescribes different levels of intervention based on the students readiness and motivation for change, addressing both the inner work (emotions, cognitions) and action work (developing stronger study skills) needed for academic improvement. Case examples illustrate the application of these techniques to counseling sessions. Also reviewed are diversity- and ability-sensitive strategies to address five major areas of student difficulty: low motivation, poor time management, procrastination, weak study skills and stress/anxiety.
2 September 30 Use of MMPI-2 in Clinical Settings: Validity Steve Maurer, Ph.D., LP A review of the MMPI-2 Validity scales for use in a college counseling setting. Seminar will include validity scale analysis practice. October 7 Use of MMPI-2 in Clinical Settings: Basic Scales/Code Types Jennifer Wilson, Ph.D., L.P. Review, discussion, and practice of the clinical scales, code types, and interpretation strategies, including cultural considerations, in a college counseling setting. October 14 October 21 October 28 Use of MMPI-2 in Clinical Settings: Content Scales & RC Scales Matt Hanson, Ph.D., L.P. This seminar covers the development, description, and interpretation of the MMPI-2 content and content component scales. Particular attention is paid to using the content scales as supplemental sources of information to the clinical scales, in addition to using the scales as unique, stand-alone sources of information to guide Use of MMPI-2 in Clinical Settings: Verbal & Written Feedback to Clients Anshan Moore Eckard., Ph.D., LP Interns will learn the Finn Model of therapeutic intervention based on Stephen Finn s MMPI-2 as a Therapeutic Intervention (1996). Strategies for how to use this model will be shared along with a case example. Sample MMPI-2 RF profile and feedback letter will be provided. Use of MMPI-2 in Clinical Settings: Putting it All Together Peter Zelles, Ph.D., L.P. In Putting It All Together the focus is on integration of the psychometric properties of the MMPI-2 with descriptive psychopathology & personality theory to create an interpretation which satisfies the referral question, and is useful to the clinician in their diagnostic and treatment planning tasks. Special attention is paid to profile validity, describing what various types of profile invalidity might mean about the subject. Actual clinical examples are reviewed in detail to help develop an approach to test interpretation and language of the report.

A framework for interpretation is provided and an example profile is presented for interns to offer an interpretation. MAAPIC Training Conference 8:00-4:00 pm (MN VA) Clinical Supervision: Ethical, Legal & Practice Issues This full day workshop will utilize didactic presentation, handouts, exercises, and videotape vignettes. It will examine clinical supervision from the perspective of various ethical, legal, and practice issues. The focus will be on the supervision of counseling and psychotherapy, but supervision of assessment will also be addressed as well as boundaries challenges in the supervisory relationship. (see separate handout for outline) NO SEMINAR Working with Trauma and Sexual Assault Leslie Bautista, Ph.D., LP Evidenced-based assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for survivors of sexual assault and other traumas. Discussion will include identification of traumatic reactions, strategies to support and empower clients, methods to manage symptoms, and ways to address vicarious traumatization. Thanksgiving - University Holiday Motivational Interviewing Mark Groberski, Ph.D., LP and Korry Arndt-Wenger, M.A Review of major concepts from Miller and Rollnick's (2013) update of motivational interviewing MI), focusing on informational exposure to MI as a counseling intervention designed to address the common concern of client's ambivalence about change. Practical techniques of MI (e.g., directive and deepening reflections, responding to resistance, and identifying and responding to change talk) will also be addressed using exercises from Building Motivational Interviewing Skills: A Practitioner Workbook (Rosengren, 2009).

Specific case examples will be used for practice and demonstration of current risk assessment strategies. Job Search Support Miriam Gerber, Ph.D., L.P. An interactive seminar providing support and direction for interns beginning their search for post-graduate work. Utilizes stories of early career psychologists, local and national resources, and networking tips to help empower interns as they look for postdoctorate fellowships or permanent positions. NO SEMINAR (/ Closed) NO SEMINAR ( Closed) NO SEMINAR ( Open House) Working with International Students Chia-Chen Tu, Ph.D., L.P. Interns will learn common presenting concerns international students bring to counseling along with a case example. The survey results of the U of M international students 1st year experience and the implication for counseling and outreach will be discussed. Recommendations for how to communicate with non- English native speakers will also be provided. Self-Injurious Behaviors Julia Reid, Ph.D., LP This seminar focuses on self-injurious behaviors in the adolescent and traditional college-aged population. Definition, characteristics (prevalence, trends, risk factors), theories, comorbid conditions, and treatments are discussed. Additionally, discussion of current cases is encouraged. Disordered Eating on Campus Deb Broderick, Psy.D. LP Evidenced-based assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for eating disorders in a college counseling center. Discussion will include identification of strategies to support students as they transition to off-campus treatment and relapse prevention upon return to campus.

Discussion will include the intersection of human development and gender identity. Addressing Internalized Homophobia in Counseling Sarra Beckham-Chasnoff, Ph.D., L.P. Internalized homophobia is defined. Counseling models that address internalized homophobia are reviewed with attention paid to the developmental process of coming out. Time permitting, NO SEMINAR at Big Ten Conference Sleep and College Students Roxanne Pritchard, Ph.D. Review of the existing and current research on the cognitive, physical, and emotional effect of sleep deficit on college students. Seminar will include strategies for improving the quality of sleep for college students. Helping Clients Understand and Manage Shame Jerry Shih, Ph.D., L.P. This seminar explains why shame is an important affect for clinicians to attend to and address, and describes how clients typically experience shame. The seminar also addresses the following topics: how shame binds with affects, drives, and interpersonal needs, common defenses against shame, interventions to treat shame, and how clients heal from shame. Working with Clients on the Autism Spectrum Robin McLeod, Ph.D., L.P. Definitional and diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum is presented. Assessment strategies for diagnosis is given. The role of the counselor is explored. Common problems college students with a diagnosis of AS experience is provided. Simple strategies (e.g., social stories) for support and intervention are modeled. Finally, a variety of supplemental resources is given. No Seminar ( Spring Break)

CBT for Anxiety Disorders Chris Vye, Ph.D., L.P. This seminar provides an overview of the anxiety disorders, information about assessment and diagnosis, and techniques for intervention with common anxiety presentations. Case studies are used to illustrate concepts. Interns are encouraged to share cases from their own practice, especially cases with which they are having difficulty. It is expected that through this sharing of cases that a focus on the college population is addressed. Working with College Athletes Carlin Anderson, Ph.D. Interns will learn about the field of sport psychology including 1) common performance issues and interventions to aid athletes in achieving peak performance; 2) mental health in athletes, with a specific focus in working with collegiate student-athletes. Topics covered are the prevalence of mental health diagnoses, unique treatment considerations, and best practices when working with athletes. Case examples are provided; and 3) the psychology of injury and factors to consider when treating injured athletes in recovery. TBA INTERNS ONLY ( Easter Holiday) Professional Leadership Glenn Hirsch, Ph.D., L.P. General qualities of leadership and organizational leadership models are reviewed in the context of leadership within college counseling centers. Career development paths to counseling center leadership positions are discussed. Examples of specific challenges in counseling center leadership are reviewed. MAAPIC Training (Mpls VA Center) 8:00-4:00pm The specific topic for this year is still in formation with the MAAPIC group, but the focus of the second MAAPIC Training is always reserved for training related to issues of cultural and ethnic diversity in practice, assessment, and research. 7 May 5 May 12 UCCS May 19 Acceptance & Commitment Therapy Jennifer Wilson, Ph.D., L.P. Features a practitioner's introduction to ACT including history and context of the approach, overview of Relational Frame Theory, and elaboration on the six core therapeutic processes. Some ACT techniques will be demonstrated, and the ACT Matrix will be presented. ACT will be compared/contrasted with CBT. Preparing for the EPPP and Licensure Alexa Fetzer, Ph.D., L.P. and Leland St. Charles, Ph.D., LP Interns will learn about the options available to them in order to support their post-doctoral processes, including but not limited to EPPP preparation, licensure, and financial loan repayment services. Mindfulness Miriam Gerber, Psy.D., L.P. An overview of the theory and practice of mindfulness for use in session with clients and as self-care for clinicians. Experiential exercises are integrated with current research and discussion. May 26 Seminar De-briefing Session Interns meet with training directors from /CAPS and U of MN to provide constructive feedback on the Intern Seminar Series in order to facilitate improvements and updates for the following academic year. An opportunity for interns to review and reflect on the learning from the intern seminars October 21 Use of Projective Assessments ( Interns only) Peter Zelles, Ph.D. LP 1:00 pm 2:30 pm An overview of the most widely used projective assessment methods will be presented. Case material will illustrate the process of assessment along with the types of information obtained. Objectives: 1) attendees will understand the types of assessment questions that can be addressed through projective techniques, 2) attendees will understand the methods used, types of data collected, and level of validity with projective techniques.
