2 Welcome to One Door s Education and Training Awareness of the importance of mental health and wellbeing is growing across Australian society. There is increasing evidence that mental health can significantly impact on individuals, families, workplaces and communities. At the same time, there is still a large amount of stigma and misunderstanding of mental illness that needs to be addressed. One Door Education and Training is a division of One Door Mental Health, who have 30 years of experience providing education and training in mental illness and associated topics. One Door Education and Training workshops are developed by experts in the field and are facilitated by mental health professionals with an in-depth knowledge drawn from years of working in the mental health sector. Most workshops feature a presentation on the lived experience of mental illness by one of our mental health educators; someone who lives with or cares for a person with mental illness and bravely shares details of their lived experience with mental illness as part of One Door s services. One Door mentors and supports each mental health educator with professional public speaking training and assistance in effectively sharing their stories, insights and knoweldge to a variety of audiances. All One Door Education and Training workshops are developed with adult learning principles and applies an experiential learning approach. Our workshops include current evidence-based information as well as a variety of interactive scenarios, practical exercises and the opportunity for participants to have their questions answered. Every participant receives a workbook that is designed for learning both during and after attendance at a workshop. At One Door we believe that mental health is everybody s business! Generally we conduct them at a venue of the client s choosing to improve accessibility; however, we can also work with you to find a suitable venue. 5 Workshop detail Read more about the particular workshops (listed in alphabetical order) below. Accidental counsellor The Accidental Counsellor workshop is for staff who are not counsellors, but find themselves in a counselling role as a result of conversations or requests for support that arise in the workplace from clients or colleagues. This workshop includes activities and discussions, and focuses on developing awareness and understanding as well as practical skills. Focusing on the importance of communication, specifically communicating with people who are in need of support, this workshop will provide participants with information, frameworks and skill practice opportunities so they can respond with increased skills and confidence. By the end of this workshop participants will have: practiced skills to identify signs of individuals in need of support and made appropriate referrals practiced communication skills including active listening and questioning presponded appropriately to people who are in need of support reflected and articulated boundaries of their role identified self-care strategies Advocacy in mental health one day workshop Advocacy in Mental Health has been specifically designed for consumers, those people with lived experience of mental illness and recovery. The purpose of this one day workshop is to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to advocate for themselves and to overcome potential barriers during their recovery journey. By the end of this workshop participants will be aware of: what it means to be one s own advocate how to make one s own choices on the recovery journey practical ideas to support self-advocacy. Advocacy and self-advocacy for carers in mental health one day workshop Advocacy and Self-advocacy for Carers in Mental Health is designed for people who are personally involved in caring for someone living with a mental illness. This one day workshop aims to empower the participants with knowledge and skills to advocate for themselves and others, and to also recognise when to step back and encourage the person living with mental illness to advocate for themself. By the end of this workshop participants will develop a greater understanding of: advocacy and self-advocacy supporting choice within another person s recovery journey addressing potential challenges and barriers faced by carers skills involved with advocacy and self-advocacy.

6 Assisting families twelve modules (2.5 hours, 3 hours and 3.5 hours in length) Assisting Families was created for carers providing carer-to-carer education on mental illness and associated topics in a modular form. The modules can be picked and mixed in order to meet the needs of participants. Bipolar Disorder Depression Mindfulness Suicide Risk Caring for Yourself Finding Hope in Grief and Loss Psychosis Challenging Conversations Meaningful Communication Recovery Conversations about Change Mental Illness Schizophrenia Boundaries two hour workshop This two hour workshop introduces the issues of boundaries and ethical practice in the workplace. It gives participants the opportunity to explore issues around ethical decision-making that may arise in their roles. define the concept of boundaries, and explain the importance of boundaries and ethical conduct in the workplace identify potential ethical dilemmas in the workplace demonstrate the ability to consider alternate viewpoints when ethical dilemmas arise. Care Coordination one day workshop Gaps and differences between services can result in significant difficulties for people living with mental illness and their carers. This one day workshop provides both the knowledge and skills needed to build and maintain strong relationships with support agencies. Founded on person-centred and recovery principles, this workshop will build confidence in staff to support people living with mental illness to more effectively navigate support services. understand the concepts and models underpinning care co-ordination explain the place of care coordination within recovery-oriented practice understand the range of mental health services develop a coordinated model of holistic support. 7 Effective communication two hour workshop The ability to communicate effectively is critical when working with people living with mental illness. The purpose of this two hour workshop is to explore the concept of effective communication and to practice skills for addressing barriers that can arise when interacting with people in the mental health context. describe components of effective communication explain the barriers to communicating effectively outline communication strategies when working with people living with mental illness demonstrate appropriate language when communicating about mental illness. Mental health focus foundation one day workshop (ee) Mental Health Focus Foundation is our core training workshop and is a prerequisite for some of our more advanced training options. This one day workshop provides a grounding in mental health knowledge and skills relevant to community, government and corporate personnel in a wide range of roles. By the end of this workshop participants will know about: mental illness in the community including its prevalence and impact signs and symptoms of mental illness the impact of stigma on families and individuals the lived experience of mental illness strategies for responding to people presenting with a range of mental health concerns. Motivational interviewing two day workshop Motivational interviewing is a collaborative, person-centred approach for communicating with a person about choice and change. The purpose of this two day workshop is to guide participants through the spirit and practice of motivational interviewing. identify a framework for understanding motivational interviewing discuss the spirit of motivational interviewing discuss the implications of ambivalence and its impact on motivation and change explain the process of change and the relationship between importance, confidence and readiness for change discuss the concepts of sustain talk, discord and change talk identify key skills for assisting people to explore ambivalence and express their reasons for change demonstrate strategies to support people to develop a plan for change. 7

8 Physical health and mental illness one day workshop (e) Physical Health and Mental Illness explores the impact of mental illness on physical health and wellbeing. Drawing on best practice guidelines, this one day workshop will provide a range of strategies for participants to utilise when supporting people to improve their physical health within mental health contexts. This workshop also focuses on the importance of using an integrated approach when addressing physical and mental health needs. consider the physical health status of people living with a mental illness and their carers work effectively within a multidisciplinary team to address a range of physical health needs support the person living with a mental illness and/or their carer to improve their physical health status familiarise themselves with a variety of support services and resources available in the community. Recovery and recovery-oriented practice one day workshop (e) Recovery and Recovery-oriented Practice provides participants with a context for understanding mental health recovery. This one day workshop introduces the principles underpining recovery-oriented practice, with the aim of providing participants with skills and knowledge for supporting people living with mental illness on their recovery journey. By the end of this workshop participants will be aware of: the context of mental health recovery the value of the lived experience the principles of recovery-oriented practice a range of challenges to recovery strategies for supporting a person on their recovery journey. Risk assessment and de-escalation one day workshop (e) Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of mental illness. This may have been gained through experience or via the Mental Health Focus Foundation workshop or similar training on mental health. Intense emotions and behaviours, especially situations of distress and aggression can be challenging for all involved. The purpose of this one day workshop is to provide participants with an opportunity to explore the reality of risk of aggression within the context of mental illness, and on skills and strategies for assessing, reducing and responding to risk utilising the principles of person-centred practice. By the end of this workshop participants will have learnt about: the reality of risk and aggression in mental health contexts the importance of anticipating risk and reducing the likelihood of aggression strategies for responding to aggression and violent behaviour techniques for debriefing and the importance of worker self-care.

9 Substance abuse one day workshop There has been a growing awareness of the extent to which people living with mental health conditions also struggle with concerns associated with alcohol and other drug (AOD) use. The combination of mental health concerns and issues associated with AOD use can significantly impact on a person, their care network and their recovery. The purpose of this one day workshop is to provide an overview of the impact of co-existing mental health and substance use issues. The workshop will also address the importance of utilising recovery-oriented approaches when supporting people to minimise potential harms associated with AOD use. understand the impact of substance use on people living with mental health conditions and their care network describe the effects of AOD on mental health explain the impact of AOD on mental health medications discuss the importance of adopting a harm minimisation approach when supporting people living with coeexisting mental health and AOD concern understand the guiding principles for supporting people with co-existing mental health and AOD conditions explain how recovery-oriented principles can underpin supporting a person living with co-occurring mental health and AOD issues describe strategies to support a co-ordinated approach for supporting people living with mental health and AAOD conditions Suicide awareness two hour workshop Suicide Awareness introduces the issue of suicide with the aim of increasing awareness, enhancing understanding, and developing knowledge and skills for responding when someone is at risk of suicide. This two hour workshop also highlights the importance of post-crisis management. identify suicide risk factors and red flags list the steps to assess someone for risk of suicide describe ways to assist individuals at risk identify resources and procedures for post-crisis support. Supporting choice two hour workshop A critical component of mental health recovery involves the right to self-determination and choices across a range of domains, such as treatment options, living situations and personal relationships. The purpose of this workshop is to provide professionals with knowledge and skills in order to work collaboratively with people living with mental illness, carers and service providers in the context of supporting choice. By the end of this workshop participants will know about: the concepts of self-determination, dignity of risk and duty of care the importance of informed choice when working with people on their recovery journey potential dilemmas that can occur when supporting a person to make choices a tool for exploring decisions and choice.

10 Supporting people living with a personality disorder one day workshop (e) Personality disorders are common but often misunderstood. The purpose of this one day workshop is to provide clarity on the range of personality disorders and some of the underlying causes. This workshop will also provide an opportunity for participants to develop an understanding of trauma-informed care, as well as skills for supporting people presenting with a personality disorder. It is particularly aimed at addressing concerns, such as distress, self-harm and boundaries. By the end of this workshop participants will know about: a range of personality disorders some of the causes of personality disorders identifying signs, symptoms and experiences of personality disorders supporting people living with a personality disorder within a trauma-informed perspective. Accredited learning courses Professionals can claim CPD points for attendance at any of our mental health first aid courses. Mental health first aid - two day workshop The 12-hour Mental Health First Aid course teaches participants (18 years and over) how to provide initial support to adults who are developing a mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis. The course curriculum is evidence-based, as informed by the MHFA Guidelines. This course has been widely evaluated in research trials conducted by MHFA Australia and independent organisations. These evaluations consistently show that participants who complete the course have improved knowledge of mental illnesses and their treatments, knowledge of appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness, benefits which are maintained over time. Some studies have also shown improved mental health in those who attend the training, decreases in stigmatising attitudes and increases in the amount and type of support provided to others. Youth mental health first aid - two day workshop The Youth Mental Health First Aid Course is for adults working or living with adolescents, those aged between approximately 12 and 18 years. However, the course can be relevant for those helping people who are a little younger or older. This course is particularly suitable for parents, teachers, sports coaches, and youth workers. The course teaches adults how to assist adolescents who are developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Course participants learn about adolescent development, the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems in young people, where and how to get help when a young person is developing a mental illness, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.

11 Mental health first aid for the suicidal person - four hour workshop This is an education course to learn how to give first aid to someone who is feeling suicidal. The course complements the 12-hour Standard MHFA course, Blended MHFA Courses and the 14-hour Youth MHFA course. Cirriculum content is based on expert consensus guidlines developed with the Delphi method using both professional and consumer experts from english speaking developed countries. Learning outcomes of the course include: Understanding accurate information about suicide rates and risk factors in the Australian context. Reviewing the first aid guidelines of how to intervene when someone is experiencing suicidal thoughts and bbehaviours Practicing these skills in a safe environment. Please note that the MHFA for the Suicidal Person Course is not a postvention course and is not recommended for individuals recently bereaved by suicide. The MHFA for the Suicidal Person Course is not a therapy or a support group and it is important that people undertaking the course are feeling relatively robust when they undertake it.
