1 2011 MASTER PLAN/PROGRESS REPORT Academic Program:MA in Psychology Person Responsible:Cam L. Melville, Ph.D. Date Submitted:05/13/2011 Mission:The mission of the Master of Arts Degree in Psychology is to prepare graduates to work in a variety of behavioral science, and related fields; and to be able to successfully pursue a doctoral degree in psychology if the graduate has that as an educational goal. The MA in Psychology focuses on: *Critical thinking: Comprehension, analysis, and evaluation of the emprical literature in psychology. *Communication: Effective speaking, listening, and writing skills for psychology. *Cultural awareness: Awareness of the influence of culture in both practice and research settings in psychology. *Ethical responsibility: Awareness of the ethical principles that guide the activities of psychologists. Institutional Mission Reference:The foundation of student success begins with faculty commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and creative scholarly activity. Skills aquired by our students include the ability to communicate effectively both in written and oral form. They also aquire empirically-based knowledge of the discipline, the ability to think critically and interpret the literature in psychology. The learning environment integrates the discipline-specific knowledge with the values of life-long learning, ethical responsibility, and civic engagement. 2 Student Learning Outcome 1: Graduates apply critical thinking in academic and professional environments. better on the written research project in Psychology % (12/14) MA Graduates in Psychology scored above 80% on the written research project in Psychology 621. >60% of Psychology MA Graduates will receive a satisfactory rating on a critical article review drawn from internet-based sources in Psychology % (5/5) of MA Graduates in Psychology received a satisfactory rating on the critical article reviews in Psychology 571. Data were not available for the remaining 9 students---these students completed 471 as undergraduates. Department decided to retain this objective therefore data will continue to be collected for this objective. better on the written Critical Thinking assignment in Psychology % (14/14) of MA Graduates received a score of 80% or better on the Critical Thinking assignment in Psychology 639. better on the data analysis project in Psychology % (14/14) of the MA Graduates received a score of 80% or better on the data analysis project in Psychology 617.
3 Student Learning Outcome 2: Graduates formulate and express ideas effectively through oral and written/technological communications in academic and professional environments. >60% of MA Graduates in the Counseling Psychology Concentration will pass the counseling video with a satisfactory rating. >60% of MA Graduates in the ABA concentration will pass the student presentation in Psyc 600 with a satisfactory rating. 100% (5/5) of MA Graduates in the Counseling Concentration passed the counseling video with a satisfactory rating. The remaining 9 MA Graduates were enrolled in concentrations other than counseling. 100% (7/7) of MA Graduates in the Applied Behavior Analysis Concentration passed the student presentation in Psyc 600 with a satisfactory rating. The remaining 7 MA Graduates were in concentrations other than ABA. >60% of MA Graduates will score 80% or better on written exams in Psychology % (12/14) of MA graduates scored above 80% on the written exams in Psychology 603. >60% of MA Graduates will score 80% or better on the movie-based written assignment in Psychology % (14/14) of MA Graduates scored above 80% on the Movie-Based assignment in Psychology 639. >60% of MA Graduates will score 80% or better on the written research project in Psychology % (14/14) of MA Graduates received a score of 80% or better on the written research project in Psychology 617. MA Graduates will rate their ability to communicate in professional contexts at 3 or better on a 4-point scale on the Graduate Exit Survey. Three Exit Surveys indicated a communication rating of 3.43.
4 Student Learning Outcome 3: Graduates analyze the global community to make sound judgments in academic and professional environments. >60 % of Psychology MA Graduates will score 80% or better on the final exam in Psychology % (13/14) of MA Graduates scored above 80% on the final exam Psychology 626. better on the written assignment on multi-cultural counseling in Psyc % (13/13) of MA Graduates scored above 80% the written assignment on multi-cultural counseling. One MA Graduate completed Psychology 626 prior to This represents a new Student Learning Outcome for the program beginning with the academic year. MA Graduates will rate their ability to make sound judgments in professional contexts at 3 or better on a 4- point scale on the Graduate Exit Survey Three Exit Surveys indicated a rating of 3.78 on their ability to make sound judgments.
5 Student Learning Outcome 4: Graduates use ethical principles to guide decisions in professional contexts. >60 % of Psychology MA Graduates will score 80% or better on the final exam in Psychology % (13/14) of MA Graduates in Psychology scored above 80% on the final exam in Psychology 685. better on the Analysis of Ethical Dilemmas assignment from Psychology % (14/14) of MA Graduates in Psychology scored above 80% on the Analysis of Ethical Dilemmas assignment in Psychology 685. better on concentration specific assignments for Counseling Psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis, Experimental Psychology, or Addictions Treatment in Psychology % (12/14) of MA Graduates in Psychology scored above 80% on the concentration specific assignments in Psychology 685. >60% of Psychology MA Graduates in the Applied Behavior Analysis Concentration will receive a P on the Ethical Principles portion of written Projects 1 and 2 in Psychology % (7/7) of MA Graduates in the Applied behavior Analysis Concentration received a P on the Ethical Principles portion of Projects 1 and 2 in Psychology 547. MA Graduates will rate the training they received in professional ethics at 3 or better on a 4-point scale on the Graduate Exit Survey. Three Exit Surveys indicated a rating 3.67 on training received in professional ethics.
