3 WHY DO PEOPLE RESIST CHANGE? They don t understand the reason for it. They fear the loss of a world they were comfortable in. They fear not being good enough to master the new demands. They have been hurt or betrayed by previous changes. They were not asked for input about the change. They don t know what it means for them. What are some other reasons? 5 ASSESSING AN ACTUAL CHANGE List the people that live with you, or those with whom you spend the most time, and based on the indicators previously mentioned, make a guess about where each person is. Name Signs Observed Phase Next, graph these people on the grid below. Place their initials approximately where they fall on the curve. Denial Commitment Resistance Exploration Finally, from your analysis, what approaches do you need to use as a caregiver/parent or family member to help them move to the next level? 6 SHIFTING YOUR FOCUS Think about a situation or condition that is a recurring source of frustration in your life. State it here as clearly as possible: Step ❶: Under the CANNOT CONTROL column, list all the aspects of this situation that you cannot control (at least 4). Step ❷: Label the first column CAN CONTROL, and list the aspects of this situation that you can control. Step ❸: Finally, label the middle column CAN INFLUENCE. Consider each item in the CANNOT CONTROL column and, one by one, list the ways that you can influence that aspect of the situation.
