Color Theory and Advertising Use this color theory document to help make wise choices with colors and the product you are advertising. Colors are non verbal/non text based cues that we subconsciously respond too. Your choice in colors will stimulate and psychologically attract consumers and express meaning in your designs/products. Not sure if you believe it? Check out these famous logos and how color changes meaning. Orange in advertising often symbolizes excitement and possesses attention getting attributes. It is also used for discount items and things that are inexpensive. Pink in advertising often symbolizes romance and femininity, but it also refers to things that are sweet. Dunkin Donuts message: Cheap and Sweet But what if we changed the colors? It changes meaning. It changes our visual cues. Green in advertising often symbolizes the natural and organic world. Green and health go hand in hand. So if we change the colors in the logo, it changes the message. Dunkin Donuts new message: Healthy and Organic Red in advertising commands attention and symbolizes excitement and strength. It is also a known appetite stimulate. Yellow in advertising suggests warmth, cheer, happiness, and here probably is meant to remind us of their signature french fries. McDonald s Message: Look how hungry you are come inside for some happy tasty fries But what if we changed the colors? It changes meaning. It changes our visual cues. Purple in advertising can have diverse meaning. It can mean mystery, spirituality, luxury and wealth. But in food choices purple or blue foods are usually spoiled. McDonald s New Message: Come eat our mysterious, possibly spoiled, expensive food?
Use the Following Colors and Explanations to help guide your choices: BLACK suggests authority, power, boldness, seriousness, is distinguishing and classic. Business wise it's great for creating drama and is good for a background color (except on websites, it is very hard on the eyes). It is ideal for text on a light background. Black also implies submission and is associated with evil. BLUE suggests security, authority, faithfulness and dignity. For business it suggests sanctuary and fiscal responsibility. It is the most popular and the second most powerful color. Blue could also be cold and depressing. People are more productive in blue rooms. Often associated with technology. BROWN suggests richness, politeness, helpfulness and effectiveness. In business it suggests less important items. Solid, reliable brown is the color of earth and is abundant in nature. Light brown implies genuineness while dark brown is similar to wood or leather.
GRAY suggests authority, practicality, earnestness and creativity. Business wise it is traditional and conservative. It is a strong supporting color in advertising. * Here the gray acts as a strong support color for the blue logo* GREEN suggests health, fertility, freedom, freshness, healing, tranquility and jealousy. Businesses use it to communicate status and wealth. It is the easiest color on the eye and can improve vision. It is a calming, refreshing color. ORANGE suggests pleasure, cool, excitement, cheer, endurance, strength and ambition. For business it is good for highlighting information on charts and graphs. It is also used to convey inexpensive or do it yourself. Associated with discount stores.
PINK suggests femininity, gentleness, well being and innocence. For business you must be aware of its feminine links and implications. It is often associated with sweets and candy. PURPLE suggests spirituality, royalty, luxury, wealth, sophistication, authority and mournfulness. In business it is upscale and works with artistic types. It is also feminine and romantic. However, because it is rare in nature, purple can appear artificial. RED suggests excitement, strength, sex, passion, vitality, aggressiveness and commands attention. Business wise it associated with debt and is great for boldness and accents. The most emotionally intense color, red stimulates a faster heartbeat and appetite.
WHITE suggests refined, spiritual, purity, devotion, contemporary and truthfulness. For business it can be sterile and refreshing. The best color on the web for a background color. Doctors and nurses wear white to imply sterility. It is also associated with technology. YELLOW suggests warmth, sunshine, cheer, happiness, jealousy, deceit and cowardice. Business wise it appeals to the intellectual types and is a good accent. Yellow enhances concentration, hence its use for legal pads. It also speeds metabolism. It is the most difficult color for the eye to take in, so it can be overpowering if overused.
