1 GOAL SETTING The basis of mental training is a goal (goals) Goals are the aim or purpose of the athletes action (like wish, dream, or chose to achieve) It s become framework that guides the athlete training & competition Is the way of the athlete to establishing a consistent program for training & competition It is also a powerful form of direction & motivation The effect of it s system are cumulative (from short to long term goals)
2 WHY NEED GOAL SETTING? Athlete with specific and challenging goals have better performance than athlete with easy goals (no goals) Goal-setting is not the ultimate solution to everything But, at the highest levels, this can be the different between making it or not. Goal-setting are influenced by the overall motivation and attitude and they can t overcome a negative attitude towards sports.
3 HOW TO MAKE GOAL SETTING? Coaches should inform athlete about goal-setting and its benefits. Coaches should find out about: 1. What are the greatest/weakness of athlete? 2. Where the athlete ability level? 3. What aspects of sport are more enjoyable for the athlete? 4. How much time is athlete willing to put into practicing? 5. Is the athlete working hard? 6. What level does the athlete want to attain?
4 TYPE OF GOAL SETTING I m sorry using tennis specific for examples, because I m expert in tennis game and I think you can adopt and analogical this examples to your sport. 1. Type Objective/Subjective 2. Type General/Specific 3. Type Outcome/Performance 4. Type Short-term, Intermediate, Long-term
