We should reconcile industrial development with nature and pursue harmony between man and nature to achieve sustainable development of the world and the all-round development of man. President Xi Jinping United Nations 9/28/15
MASLOW S HIERARCY OF NEEDS LEVELS 1 & 2 LEVELS 3 & 4 LEVEL 5 Safety and survival needs Food Clothing Shelter Social and esteem needs Appreciation Respect Spiritual needs Self-knowledge Selfdevelopment Self-realization ME THEM US
I argue that organizational structures and human behavior have not kept pace with the complex technologies we the engineers and scientists have created. Dr. Tad W. Patzek, Chairman Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering Dept University of Texas
Ecological sustainability is really the platform for the next stage of cultural evolution, in which the entire planet begins to move into higher realms of spiritual development, self-discovery and self-realization. There s also probably a certain degree of cultural and spiritual evolution that has to happen first in order for us to get to the point where we can actually establish sustainable technologies all over the planet. Harden Tibbs, CEO Synthesys Strategic Consulting
BENEFITS OF GOING GREEN Energy savings boost bottom line Employee morale improved Businesses reputation enhanced Illness related absenteeism reduced Health care costs lower Natural resources more plentiful

The environmental news should be the most common vehicle for social education and public participation. Hui Zhijun Senior Environmental Reporter CCTV
We see a lot of problems we see a lot of changes taking place in the environment, and also in people's thinking and way of doing things. I mean, we've seen a lot more government efforts; we've seen a lot of efforts from scientists and others to try to fix these problems. And in spite of these efforts, we see the problems getting worse and worse, so we're trying to think where we went wrong, how we could do this better. And the belief is that it is only when everybody takes action, when everybody starts to think and everybody puts their heart in things that it is only then that we can see a hope, a change, in the future. Liu Yunhua Shangri-La Institute for Sustainable Communities June, 2015
THE NATURAL STEP Developed by Karl-Henrik Robert of Sweden in 1989 Comprehensive scientifically-based solution to environmental problems Four principles for healthy and sustainable ecosystem
CONDITIONS FOR SUSTAINABILITY Limit substances removed from earth Limit persistent man-made substances Minimize the amount of waste produced by old or obsolete products Meet people s basic needs
DECISION MAKING Q. How do you make good decisions? A. Experience Q. How do you gain experience? A. Make bad decisions
WHY PEOPLE MAKE BAD DECISIONS Misunderstanding of self-interest Biases and prejudices Mistaken beliefs
WHY PEOPLE MAKE BAD DECISIONS Misunderstanding of self-interest
A human being is a part of a whole, called by us the universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest... as a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prism by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Albert Einstein
SELF-INTEREST NARROW B R O A D ME US
WHY PEOPLE MAKE BAD DECISIONS Biases and prejudices
BIASES AND PREJUDICES Self-serving Group/family Blind spot Over-confidence
WHY PEOPLE MAKE BAD DECISIONS Mistaken beliefs
MISTAKEN BELIEFS Everything separate and independent Not enough for everyone s needs More things mean more happiness There are no consequences
COME TO YOUR SENSES Feel it Smell it Hear it Taste it See it
SEEING IS BELIEVING?
NON
The power of spiritual forces in the Universe how active it is everywhere. Invisible to the eyes, and impalpable to the senses, it is inherent in all things, and nothing can escape its operation. Confucius
EXPANDED CONSCIOUSNESS Everything is interconnected Sharing & cooperation work best Happiness unrelated to more things Everything has consequences
RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOR Individual responsibility Community responsibility Ecological responsibility
We are what we think, with our thoughts we create the world. Buddha
INTERDEPENDENT WORLD DECISION MAKER
COMMUNITY RESPONSIBILITY Govern the people by regulations, keep order among them by chastisements, and they will flee from you, and lose all self respect. Confucius
ECOLOGICAL RESPONSIBILITY Everyone should make the effort to consume green products and to build the national system, including the propaganda and education required, so as to enlarge the green supply chain. We have to promote the ecological culture in the society, and the ways of living green, so as to encourage the public involvement. Liu Zhiquan, Deputy Director General Ministry of Environmental Protection
RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION FOR SUSTAINABILITY
People think that people can live better only if they have more knowledge, technology, machines, and material wealth. Therefore people produce, consume, and discharge more and more. But mass production, mass consumption and mass emissions are not sustainable. Lu Feng, Professor, Director Dept. of Philosophy Tsinghua University
REFORM PLAN FOR ECOLOGICAL PROGRESS Cultivate and popularize eco-culture Raise public awareness about ecological progress Advocate a green life-style
KEYS TO A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE Self-interest that serves the common good Self-responsibility toward the natural world Resources shared - basic needs met Consequences realized and avoided
