How cohesion? Information ordering & thematic patterns Conjunctions Reference Substitution & Ellipsis Lexical strings 2
In well-written academic texts, the logical flow between clauses is clear from the content and organization (such as topic and supporting sentences, theme-new patterns), so few conjunctions are typically needed. Since logical reasoning is a foundation of academic communication, it is often generated implicitly. HOW? 3
Cohesion toolkit Structural Information ordering Thematic structure Creation of texture Lexical zone Lexical strings Cohesive strategies Conjunctions Grammatical zone Reference Ellipsis Substitution 4
Finding lexical strings In neuroscience, the disorders of the central nervous system (CNS), which controls mechanical, physical, and biochemical functions of humans, have been one of the largest research areas. The research showed understanding the complex functionality of the human brain would be beneficial for degenerative CNS diseases such as Alzheimer s or Parkinson s. We used Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fmri), which is a noninvasive imaging technique for the human brain mapping field. Since the early 1990s, it has been a powerful tool in both research and clinical areas, helping further the understanding of brain functions. (Caplan, 2016) 5

Finding lexical strings: You try! Starbucks has easily made their name by the unique treatment of their clientele as well. The Starbucks employee manual emphasizes the importance of presentation, encouraging employees to know the customers names, drink orders or personal preferences (Simon 73). The employees play a vital role in creating the environment that Starbucks regulars love, the feeling of community, relaxation, and comfort. This coffeehouse embraces the customer as an individual. Although Starbucks worries more about their profits than the experience of the individual, the two concepts are related. An increase in the customer s satisfaction with their Starbucks experience results in an increase in profit. The employees are encouraged to create a personal connection with the customer. For example, a barista may wish a college student luck on their finals during the end of the semester, as the young customer orders a large Frappuccino to take an edge off of the stress. (Caplan, 2016) 10
Finding lexical strings: Your turn! Starbucks has easily made their name by the unique treatment of their clientele as well. 12 Lexical strings Employees Employee manual Importance of presentation = personal connection Create environment = Starbucks experience Starbucks = name = Customer = individual = = Customer satisfaction; personal experience College student = Profit increase in profit 12
Lexical strings Employees Employee manual Barista Importance of presentation = personal connection Create environment = Starbucks experience know customer s names; drink orders; personal preferences feeling of community; relaxation; comfort Starbucks = name = coffee house Customer = individual = clientele = regulars Customer satisfaction; personal experience College student = young customer finals; semester; stress Profit increase in profit 13
Suggestions for teaching Create tasks to identify and evaluation cohesion through lexical strings Spot the problem/odd one out (underdeveloped string) Encourage substitution through use of synonyms, nominalized forms, etc. (expanding vocabulary) Once knowledge is built up -> students analyze their own writing for lexical cohesion 14
Why? awareness of resources to build texture; noticing prepare students as discourse analysts They examine other s texts to identify patterns and strategies They inform their own text production; review their own texts 15
Lexical strings (S1) Epidemic disease contributed to a slow rate of population increase and a changing demographic profile. (S2) Poor sanitation contributed to disease patterns, as the San Francisco and the San Agustin rivers served as both sewage facilities and sources of water, leading to dysentery and gastrointestinal diseases. (S3) In addition, residents suffered from periodic epidemics, six of which broke out between 1617 and (S4) These outbreaks of measles, smallpox, and typhus affected indigene far more readily than Spaniards or mestizos, sometimes killing one of every five indios. (S5) As a result, Bogotá became an increasingly mestizo city, such that the early importance of indigenous peoples to its growth is largely overlooked. (S6) The smallpox epidemic of was particularly lethal, killing some five thousand persons in the city, most of them of indigenous ancestry. (Adapted from Sowell, 2012, p. 722) 16
Cohesive device Reference Personal Pronouns Reference Determiners Specificity (the, one) Possession (their, her, his) Proximity (this, that; here, there; then, now) Quantity & distribution (many, some, all, any) N/A Examples in text THE: S2: the rivers; S5: the early importance ; S6: The smallpox epidemic; S7: the city POSSESSION: S5: its growth PROXIMITY: S4: these outbreaks QUANTITY 7 DISTRIBUTION: S2: as both ; S6: some five thousand ; most of them Reference Comparatives S4: far more readily than Lexical strings lexical string related to disease: Epidemic disease; disease patterns; dysentery; gastrointestinal diseases; periodic epidemics; broke out; outbreaks of measles, smallpox, and typhus; smallpox epidemic lexical string related to demographic profile: indigene; Spaniards or mestizos; indios; mestizo; indigenous peoples; indigenous ancestry 17
