3 Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared. - BUDDHA PERFECT LIVING: HAPPINESS EMBARKING ONTO 2017 WITH A HAPPY LIFE Being happy does not mean that everything is perfect. It does not mean that we need to have a perfect life in order for us to be happy. Happiness is a reflection of our attitude in being grateful for all the blessings and struggles we have experienced in our lives the happiness of our lives will depend on the quality of our thoughts. After all, happiness is a choice, not a result. Nothing will make you happy until you choose to be happy and this can be done by being grateful and content with what we have. Being truly happy requires an understanding that true happiness is defined by being able to make a positive impact in other people s lives. A sensation we feel when we are doing good is known as the helper s high and it is produced when your brain releases endorphins, the feel-good chemicals of the brain. When you do something good for someone else, your brain s pleasure centers light up, releasing endorphins - producing this high. The BMC Public Health journal concludes that doing good deeds is good for mental health and has been linked to improved well-being and life satisfaction, and decreased depression. Sonja Lyubomirsky, Ph.D, a professor of psychology at the University of California also states that people who engage in kind acts become happier over time. With happiness being the true measure of success, Anandamaya Residences would like to wish our homeowners a Happy New Year 2017 and a Happy Lunar New Year May this year be resourceful, active, and thus bring confidence in everything you do. 4 HEALTHY LIFE, HAPPY LIFE In the book of The Rough Guide to Happiness, therapist Nick Baylis wrote Good nutrition in all its forms - from food and sleep to exercise and daylight - will help our mind-body system thrive profoundly. The key to improving your mood with food is to eat more whole foods instead of processed foods. The Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil, vegetables, fish, and whole grains reduce depressive symptoms by 30%. We can easily switch white rice to brown rice, and consume whole grain breads instead of the regular white bread. Lack of sleep also produces higher rates of stress hormones. So, more and better quality sleep can make you feel happier. The stress hormone cortisol can also be lowered by spending time outdoors or exercising in a green/natural environment. Exercise can help reduce anxiety and improve your mood. The release of feel-good brain chemicals such as endorphins and dopamine triggers positive feelingsin the body. By making healthy lifestyle choices, you can have improved overall appearance, prevention of diseases and increase the length of one s active life. 5 TRAITS OF HAPPY PEOPLE They accept and embrace themselves and do not seek approval from others. Self-worth is vital to happiness. If you don t feel good about yourself, it s difficult to feel good about anything else. Happy people understand that nobody is perfect, but they always strive to be a better person each day. Happy people do not obsess themselves with tangible rewards or destinations, they prioritize experiences over possessions and do not try to measure their lives in terms of how much wealth they have. Happy people tend to buy experiences instead of materialistic possessions. Materialistic possessions can only promise a temporary sensation of happiness, while experiences like travel promote happiness - long after the holiday ends. Happy people is that they always live in the moment. They focus on living life in the present and focus on making the best out of every day. They do not dwell in the past nor are they worried about what the future might be. After all, happiness is not about reaching a destination or achieving a goal, it s about enjoying the journey that is life.
6 LIVING IN THE MOMENT In the Journal of Happiness Studies by Ryan Howell, a researcher from the San Francisco State University mentions that having a balanced time perspective can make people more vital, more grateful, and more satisfied with their lives. It is okay to have fond past memories, but spending too much time remembering the past can keep you from enjoying the present. The same goes into worrying too much about the future. It will also hinder us from enjoying the present, although having future goals is beneficial so our present can be more meaningful with something to look forward to and to work towards. Living in the moment can be as simple as focusing on one task at a time. When we are at work, we often dream of a vacation, and while we are on vacation, we worry about work. We should relish in the task at hand. Often, we are too caught up in a fast paced environment, and it pressures us to move and do things quickly. We need to remind ourselves to slow down, tune into the sights and sounds of our surroundings, and awaken our senses to the world around us.
