Possibilities, Partnerships and Healing Noel E Holdsworth DNH, PMHNP-BC, CTS Winter Haven Hospital BayCare Health System Winter Haven, FL APNA 28 th Annual Conference October 25, Disclosure This speaker has no conflicts of interest to disclose 2 Making a Difference The purpose of this presentation is to remind you that one person can make a difference. 3 Holdsworth 1
Making a Difference Especially in this new culture of healthcare, where the focus on tasks and outcome measures are taking our energy away from the connection and caring that drives not only our profession but our specialty of psychiatric nursing. Literature review: Science of Nursing Presentation: Art of Nursing 4 Examples Partnerships Partnership with professionals (The Envelope) Partnerships with patients (The Frequent Flyer) Partnerships with mentors and heroes (The Home Health Nurse) Partnerships with peers and colleagues (PNPC) 5 Upon Conclusion At the end of this presentation, you will be able to: 1. Define emotional intelligence 2. Discuss and describe the value of partnerships in healing 3. List ways to develop quality connections with clients in shorter time frames with improved outcomes 6 Holdsworth 2
To Make a Difference To make a difference, you must have a connection! Connections come from: Doing things together Thinking congruently Believing together OR Feeling something together Feelings are the glue that bring it all together Example: Memory and feelings 7 Feelings (Emotions) We are in the business of assisting patients to manage their feelings, but often do not manage our own. Most current competency evaluations are based on the science of nursing. Emotional Intelligence competency would be measuring and addressing the ART of Nursing. 8 Definition: Emotional Intelligence Awareness of, and the ability to manage and express one's emotions with an understanding of how to use them positively in decision making and influencing others. There are four components to Emotional Intelligence: Perception of emotions (both personal and others) Utilization of these emotions to accomplish necessary tasks (courage) Understanding the emotions and the variations of them Managing the emotions (fighting the right fights) 9 Holdsworth 3
Belief vs. Thought Emotional Intelligence (E.I.) facilitates transformation of caring into practice by using instinctive intuitive knowing to change lives Low E.I. will limit ones ability to care and interferes with ones ability to trust that knowing Those Intelligent feelings are associated with beliefs. Beliefs are not the same as thoughts. Beliefs come from a knowing from deep inside other places besides the brain (like the gut, heart, etc.). They are the difference between: I think you will get better AND I believe you will get better 10 Feelings at the End of Shift ANA study reported how nurses felt at the end of their shift: 50% felt exhausted and discouraged 44% felt discouraged and sad that they couldn t meet their patients need 40% felt powerless to provide safe quality care 26% reported they were afraid for their patients Why Emotions Matter: Age, Agitation, and Burnout Among Registered Nurses R.J. Erickson PhD, and W.J.C. Groves PhD 08/No1Jan08/ArticlePreviousTopic/WhyEmotionsMatterAgeAgitationandBurnoutAmongRegisteredNurses.html 11 Emotional Intelligence & Feelings E.I. begins with an awareness of feelings. Once we are aware of our TRUE feelings, we will always know what to do. Being aware of our feelings also involves being aware when we stop feeling. E.I. is the difference between a good nurse and a great nurse, which is a nurse who can continue to care and care about the right things. 12 Holdsworth 4
The Solution Partnership with yourself including mind, body and spirit Partnerships with a higher power or a belief system, miracles and hope Partnerships with your peers and colleagues Partnerships with your patients Partnership with others such as heroes, authors, coaches and mentors 13 Definition of Partnership One associated with another, especially in an action An arrangement in which parties agree to cooperate in order to advance their mutual interests Partnerships involve movement, direction and outcomes 14 Value of Partnerships in Healing Awareness: Partnerships facilitate feedback about our feelings and act as a mirror Ventilation: Partnerships allow for therapeutic release and processing of feelings Accountability: Partnerships facilitate ownership of thoughts actions, feelings and behavior Motivation: Partnerships are the best cheerleaders and inspirers Validation: Partnerships normalize feelings Tools and Solutions: Partnerships help find the right answers Education: Partnerships assist in transforming feelings; not all feelings were meant to be released sometimes they are meant to be transformed into action 15 Holdsworth 5
Components of Partnerships Trust, Non-judgment, Honesty with kindness Tough love with compassion, dependability, Competency, Connectivity, Similar goals and values, Differences, Silent or active Social Support and partnerships involve levels of love, a belief in something often the belief in possibilities and hope 16 Who you are will determine the value and usefulness of any partnership Who you are will fuel the level of difference you make in the lives of the people and environment around you Power of positive Thinking, Positive Doing, Positive Feeling, And the Power of Positive Being 17 The Impact of Feeling Good You can make a difference simply by being happy: Your energy is the power Being happy and feeling love is a choice It s all about the choice (Penny) If you treat an individual as he is, he will remain how he is. But if you treat him as if he were what he ought to be and could be, he will become what he ought to be and could be. - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe 18 Holdsworth 6
Developing Quality Connections (in shorter timeframes) Being present with purpose Being aware of your own feelings and being aware of the other persons feelings Being connected and being willing to connect Seeing with your mind Hearing with your heart 19 Ventilation, Validation, Education Ventilation about the feelings Validation about the feelings (not always the behavior) Education is about transforming the feelings and is about the being, not the doing EXAMPLE: Some days you are a one and some days you are a seven 20 Falling Down is Normal Falling down is a normal part of life Getting back up is the courage and joy of life.and is always easier with a partner 21 Holdsworth 7
The light house is not responsible for the safety of the ship but only responsible to be the light! (What the partnership is not ) 22 The Glass Is it full of crystal clear water? Is it cloudy? Is it empty? 23 I Choose Love Its always ok to to believe in miracles, to have hope, and to choose love. by Shawn Gallaway; is used by permission and can be purchased at 24 Holdsworth 8
Loving.loving life It s the best thing you can give to yourself It s the best thing you can give to others It was a gift to you so give it back! Partner with life: Love Your Life 25 Love your life! Sonia Choquette (Hay House) Used with permission 26 Noel E Holdsworth DNH, PMHNP-BC, CTS Noel.Holdsworth@baycare.org 27 Holdsworth 9
