2 Course Description from the FGCU Catalog CCJ 3603 Forensic Behavioral Analysis - 3 credits Pragmatic review of the psychological, physiological, and sociological theories and practices which seek to evaluate and analyze deviant human behavior and environments that precipitate criminal conduct. Course Objectives Following completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Synthesize and integrate theories of the origin of criminal behavior. 2. Understand and communicate the significance of a multidisciplinary theory of crime causation. 3. Evaluate mental illness as a precipitating variable and understand its relationship to legal competency. 4. Become capable of clearly communicating the relationship of Conduct and Antisocial Personality to deviant behavior. 5. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship of sexual paraphilias, stalking patterns, and rape classifications. 6. Demonstrate an understanding of wrongful death; manslaughter, mass murder, and serial murder. Course Policies Assigned Reading and Assignments All assigned readings on the course schedule are due the day of that lecture for discussion. All course assignments must be completed and submitted via Canvas by the time assigned. Late assignments are not accepted. Check your schedule now and plan ahead. Waiting until the last minute is never an excuse. Please be considerate of your classmates and your instructor and do your work on time. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, the instructor may provide reasonable accommodation, so long as you provide notification ahead of time or as soon as possible if you have an emergency. The instructor may require verification from you regarding any situation for which you request special accommodation. Attendance and Participation You are required to attend every class and participate in class discussions. The more you participate, the more you will understand. There are no wrong answers or dumb questions so, if you are unsure or disagree, challenge each other respectfully! Technology Usage The use of cellular phones or other electronic communication devices is not permitted during class and they must be turned OFF. Electronic audio or visual recording of the lecture period is not permitted. Requests for exceptions must be accompanied by written verification of need. Students who choose to use a laptop or other device for taking notes during class must sit in the front row of class and allow the instructor visible access to the 2

3 laptop screen. Understand that use of technology in class is a privilege, which may be revoked at the instructor s discretion. Any information not covered in this course outline is specifically supplemented by the current Florida Gulf Coast University catalog and Student Guidebook. Course Assignments All assignment will be submitted through Canvas and descriptions will be unlocked the week they are assigned. Submissions will be locked at 11:59pm on the date listed. All writings must be submitted in APA format and will be graded accordingly. Quizzes 1 & 2 Each quiz will test your current level of knowledge based on material covered in class and the required readings. Quizzes may consist of multiple choice, true/false, and/or short answer questions. All quizzes will be taken at the beginning of class on the dates scheduled on the syllabus. Antisocial Personality Annotated Bibliography You will be required to review current and classical literature on ASPD in relation to criminal behavior and provide an annotated bibliography on five sources. APA format applies and annotations should be limited to no more than 150 words each. You will be graded on formatting, content, and understanding of the topic. You may not use the course texts. Forensic Behavioral Consultation Report You will be called upon to provide Forensic Behavioral Analysis as a special consultant to an agency. After reviewing relevant case information, you will be tasked with providing a behavioral analysis and presenting a suggested outcome while considering the goals and needs of the individual, community, and Justice System. This will be similar to your case studies but will additionally require you to use your knowledge of theory and behavior to propose a solution that will provide maximum benefit to society. Final Exam Tuesday, December 12 th 3:00pm 5:15pm Holmes Engineering 224 Questions will consist of a mixture of multiple choice, matching, short answer and essays. Multiple choice and matching questions will test your knowledge of the diagnostic criteria for the DSM-V disorders discussed throughout the semester. Short answer and essay questions will test your knowledge of Classic Theories of Crime and application of the course material to mock crime scenarios. 3
