Stress has different effect on people as it provides strength and increases capacity to learn however becomes a threat which creates helplessness among students. The study makes an attempt to know social support role in handling psychological problems amongstudents of professional course and its impact on their academics performance. Psychological problem includes anxiety, stress and depression and persuade of student support and social group. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) was used to measure the level of anxiety, stress and depression among graduates and postgraduates students andself-constructed questionnaire to measure the socialsupport. The researcher has also included secondary data in framing the model. The study states a negative relation between student support and psychological problem. Students perceive that their course mate help them better to manage their stress than other social group as they can share, understand and help each other well. There are various other determinants which effects in managing psychological problems which can be depicted through system dynamics approach which involve stock flow diagram. The present research will help counselors, academician and institution in forming strategies for students in managing their psychological problems arising out of daily hassles. Keywords: Anxiety, Stress, Depression, System Dynamics INTRODUCTION Evolution of students from school to college atmospheremay cause psychological, social and academicfear to them, as both thelearning system has enormous differences on its own. The student features new associations among students themselves, new intellectual requirements, and different type of relationships between students and faculties and new methods of teaching even new relations among students themselves. In Jordan, most schools are not coeducation based so student s co-education will have new types of relations with the opposite gender. Due to these modifications, students can potentially experience various types of stress that can affect their rational and social health and their performance in academics. Performance in academic life demands all feature of welfare, those includessubstantialhealthy, social well-being, and affectiontionate, spiritual and psychological happiness.those students who are psychologically and physically stable are expected to perform betterthan not mentally, psychologically and physically fit. In other words, individuals who are experiencing psychological problems such as anxiety, depression and stressmay face problems in managing their academic performance.anxiety, depressionand stress are the psychological problems that are common among students. Social support leads important impact on living relieved and attaining success by students in their life. Among social groups, friends and family becomes the most significant source of support for an individual to persuade accomplishment in not only academics but also in their future. Psychological Problems: Depression: A depress feel is an experience of misery or distress. Depression may entails feelings of being hopeless, sad, helpless, disappointed, despair, weak, andfrustrated. Many depressed individuals may unable to perform fit in educational level. Since, they are low in self confidence. Symptoms of depression aredifficulty in concentration, lack ofinterest and motivation, preoccupations, fatigability, and poor attendance. Depression has shown its effect on the performance of the student in academics. Anxiety:Anxiety is a psychological disorder that is associated with significant suffering andimpairment in functioning. It is a blend of thoughts and feelings characterized by a sense ofuncontrollability and unpredictability over potentially aversive life events. The way students perceive and experience their academic related matters is also one of thefactors that could affect the performance of the students. Stress:Academic stress is the product combination of academic related demands that exceed the adaptive resources available to an individual.stress is a mechanism of any internal or external demand made upon the body. Stress is considered as a state of individuals that result from their interaction with environment that is 108
2 perceived as too demanding and a threat to their well-being. The stressors are not only physical, but may also involve emotions. Social Group Support: Student support issignificant for persons in the life of students. Scarcities in social support have beenmade known to be associated with the psychological problems. Lack of support hasbeen found to be one of the factors that lead to many psychological problems among students.a growing numberof literature and empirical research have indicated the relationship between support group and psychologicalproblems among students.support given by studentto their classmates is considered to have a positive impact on the student s academic performance. Student support is aconsiderablesustenance providedby others when desirable which comprises emotionalsupport and coping strategies. Student support is an element that can help students to decrease the amount of stress experienced as wellas to help individual manage better in dealing with stressful situations.the proper knowledge of positive influence of student support and its role in managing the psychological glitches will help to create more opportunities in developing the support group and it might also benefit the psychologist and professors to proposeand organize proper development program in managing the psychological glitches. Need of the Study Stress is one of the factors thataffect life of a student and its effects could be visible in student s social, mental health and in their performance in academics. Psychological stability isdefinitely an important interpreter that could add to high academic achievement of a student. Hence, itis very essential to review and study the psychological well-being of students. The findings of research can be used to develop more approaches and making strategies by the counselors, professors and others to help in reduce stress of students and strategies to help students to do extremely well in their academics. It is important to obtain information about the state of students psychological and psychological growth in the university because it is related to their academic achievement. LITERATURE REVIEW According to Baroon and Greenberge (2000) stress is individual, emotional and physiologicalreactions beside stimulus. Hussien and Hussien (2006) has defined stress is the condition by which the individual suffers from psychologicaland physical hyper tension resulted from factors that can't be tackled and exceeds the coping ability of human.weightman (1999) classifies causes of stress into three main classifications: Sudden trauma, daily hassles and chronic stressors which further explain that there are three major trends in studying stress. First, stress is anincentive that threats the person s life, therefore stress is an independent variable initiated from the individual domestic environment. Secondly, stress is the reaction to the external environment;accordingly stress is treated as a dependent variable which affects cognitive, emotional and physiological body functions. And finally trend is the transactional approach which is a mixture of the last two trends. Gramling and Elliot (1990) instigated that social assistance helps the college student in reducingand managing their psychological difficulties. Darling and Steinberg (1994) explained that 50% of college students are those who consultedmental health service and have complained about the difficulties in study, nervousness, tension, and sadness.they had reported that these circumstancesgive to poor grades in academic courses. Anxiety, stress and depression were found to be interrelated with one another. The partly covered symptoms ofthe three psychological problems can lead to all kind of academic problems that can giveimpact to the performance in academic among students. Students who experience intellectual and substantial health problems are at higher risk for reduced performance in academics.therefore, increasing academic stress and bring about a cycle of stress, maladaptive handled and compromised the health (Ward Struthers, Menec and Perry 2000and Norris, Kashy&Haines 1996). Thepaper helps in understanding the role of social support in managing anxiety, depressionand stress is indispensable.macgeorge, Samter, and Gillihan (2005) observed a moderating effect of informational, supportive communicative behaviors from family and friends on the relationship between academic stress and psychological health students in communication classes. MacGeorge explained that the association between academic stress and depression decreased as informational support increased. Steinhardt and Dolbier (2008)focused the interactional relationship between academic stress and social support. Social support observed in the research is the identify availability of reserve provided by 109
3 family and friends that support the individual in everyday activities (Rayle, 2006). Support from student and professors have been positively associated with self-worth (Clifton, 2004). Thelacks of social support from professors have a negative consequence on the educational performance of students (Clifton, 1997). The intention of the present study is to obtain improved understanding of the role of student support accompanied by the correlation of academic stress and flexibility among professional course students. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The objectives to pursue the study are 1. To examine the level of depression, stress and anxiety among students 2. To identify the determinants of psychological problem 3. To frame stock flow model for linking social group with coping mechanism RESEARCH METHODOLOGY The researcher has included both primary as well as secondary data analysis in the study. Secondary data was collected by various other research papers, websites, articles and other relevant material to frame stock flow diagram to make clear vision of the determinants of psychological problems. Primary data on the other hand was collected from 200 professionalcourses studentsthrough structured questionnairedepression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) was used to measure depression, anxiety, and stress. The DASS isa 42-item self-report measurewhich is consisted of scales that assessed their level of depression, anxiety, stress (DASS) and self structured questionnaire to measure the role student support to manage the psychological problem and impact on academic performance. ANALYSIS Depression Anxiety Stress Scale: In present paper, coefficient alpha values were 0.91 for depression; 0.93 for anxiety; and 0.92 for stress.majority of the students believes that their performance in academics may also increase with the help of solving problems with student support group.the finding reveals a significant negative relationship between social support and depression anxiety and stress and increases their level of confidence among students. 4 The support may hold students in dealing with various stressors in theiracademic life and make possible a positive adjustment process (Rawson, 1994).The effect of psychological problems might be reduced if students have fine and adequate support with them.there are various determinants which make balance in stress and managing it. Social group places a very important role in managing it parents support lead to good personal behavior improves the students group which helps a students to understand all queries and assignment given to them and completing the task effectively on deadlines and also create good relation with professors. Bad habit group on the other hand will make to adopt bad habits and force not to study which led to no proper work, queries and create bad relation with professors. Students assistance also help a student in managing stress arising out of understanding in overcrowded class, having inadequate resources and tension rising of uncertain job. Good family background helps a student to learn moral values and differentiate between right and wrong and improve communication skills which again help in creating good relations with professors, students and others. All these factors ultimately helps student in managing their stress and performing well in their academics and further in future as it help in grooming their personality. Students perceives that it is comparatively easy to tackle the problem when they have social support especially of same age group because they are facing almost same problem, giving solution to them with a mode of discussion and removing the consciousness about explaining some problem which is related to personal life.therefore, the existence of good student support can reduce the extent to which situations are perceived as a threat towell-being. Student support might found to be one of the protective factors for students that may reduce the quantityof psychological problems. CONCLUSION The present study gives noteworthy information pertaining to the relationship between psychological problems and student support among students, an increase in psychological problems may lead to a decrease in academic achievement among students. The finding of the study visibly indicated a significant negative correlation between student support and psychological problems. The paper supports the significance of student support among all other social support group among students who not only share but to minimize their psychological problem and increase the level of self-confidence and also increases their performance in academics. Students must be conscious of the significance of social support andexistence of psychological problems which they usually face to control these problems.as student themselves among all other social group understand and facing approximately same type of problem and further take help of elders.professor, counselors and psychologist can design and develop proper involvement program in reducing psychological problems among students.
