I - INTRODUCTION Living in this world today is full Of pressures, strains and stress. Stress obliviously, is the result of one s greed, desires and ambitions.members of the teaching staff have been reporting that the increasing levels of stress at work are affecting their health, well-being and job satisfaction. Many (especially younger, untenured) women in the academy chronically face a difficult choice to do the research they must do to keep their jobs and earn tenure or complete essential domestic obligations. Many academic women feel that their career opportunities are limited after having children. Stress has both positive and negative hob behavior towards the individuals and the organizations. Positive job behaviors reflected in increase in productivity, high employee morale, better mental and physical health of the worker 35
2 and good relationship between the employer and the employee. Negative job behavior is seen in accidents, absenteeism and high labor turnover. Teaching also has its own strains and stresses. It is no more mere preparing the lesions, lecturing in the classes and evaluating the student. These problems create more stress and ultimately affect the performance of the teachers. II - STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The major resource of every country is the human resource. The quality of its human resource depends upon the quality of education, which in turn depends on the quality of teachers. The quality of teachers is connected to their personal qualities like their education, attitude and satisfaction in the job. The status of the teachers reflects the socio-cultural ethos of a society makes an attempt to assess the effect of work stress among Private School teachers at Periyakulam Taluk. III-OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY To identify the causes of stress in the School teachers. To measure the job satisfaction levels among the teachers. To suggest remedial measure for job stress at School of Periyakulam Taluk. IV-METHODOLOGY The present study is based on primary and secondary data sources. The primary data has been collected from 240 faculty members through questionnaire. The secondary data has been collected from journals, magazines, and newspapers. Purposive sampling technique has been adopted for the selection of 240 respondents. V-STATISTICAL TOOL The statistical tools used for this analysis are as follows. Chi Square Analysis The chi square (the Greek letter pronounced key ) statistic is a nonparametric statistical technique used to determine if a distribution of observed frequencies differs from the theoretical expected frequency. Chi square statistics use nominal (categorical) or ordinal level data, thus instead of using means and variances, this test uses frequencies. The Chi square test procedure tabulates a variable into categories and computes chi square statistic. It is a statistical tool to test whether two variables are independent. The chi-square test for independence examines whether knowing one variable influences another variable. The formula applied is given below 36
3 Formula RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS 2 ( O E 2 ) E Socio Economic Profile of the Respondents Where, O= Observed frequency, E = Expected frequency, c = Number of columns, r = Number of rows, With degree of freedom (df) = (c-1) (r-1). Socio Economic Variables No. of Percentag Respondents e Below Age (in years) Above Male Gender Female Married Marital status Unmarried D.T.Ed Educational B.Ed Qualification B.Ed with Ph.D Below Teaching years 3-5 years years years Experience Above 16 years Less than Salary Above
4 It is clear from the Table 1, that out of 240 respondents 136 respondents (56.7%) are female; most of the work stress peoples are 127 (52.9%) fall in the age group of Below 30 years; 132 (54.9%) are married, 123 (51.2%) had UG with B.Ed qualification, 95 (39.5%) of respondents are 3-5 years Teaching experience, 120 (50%) fall in the Salary of Rs.5001-Rs Chi-square test analysis reveals that the variables except age and marital status are not significantly related to the work stress of private school teachers. VI-CONCLUSION The present study is on the identification of factors of stress amongst Teachers. It is Gender, age, Teaching Experience and Salary are the main sources of distress for teachers. The study reveals that most of the teachers in School experience medium level of work stress. On the basis of these findings, it is concluded that there is a need to eliminate all dimension of work stress one by one to reduce their impact on work satisfaction, job performance, and physical and mental health, if the work stress is minimized excellence can be achieved with in short span of time more and more. SUGGESTIONS The Management should arrange the yoga class and regular walk opportunities that reduce the Teachers work stress. The physical health problem mostly suffered so that the Management should be care about on Teachers physical health problem. The Management should engage counselors who would help the teachers to identify the causes of their problems and solve them.
