3 Biosketch of Speakers Brad Newsome, Ph.D. Health Scientist Administrator Center for Translation Research and Implementation Science (CTRIS), National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) National Institutes of Health (NIH) Brad Newsome, Ph.D., is a Health Scientist Administrator in the Center for Translation Research and Implementation Science (CTRIS) at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In his position within the CTRIS Health Inequities and Global Health Branch, Dr. Newsome oversees a global health-related research portfolio geared toward turning proven heart, lung, blood and sleep (HLBS) health discoveries into sustainable health outcomes in populations throughout the world. This includes scientific and programmatic oversight of the NHLBI T4 Translation Research Capacity Building Initiative in Low Income Countries (TREIN) (U24) and Hypertension Outcomes for T4 REsearch within Lower Middle-Income Countries (Hy-TREC) (U01) programs. Dr. Newsome is a biomedical scientist trained at the interface of materials chemistry, toxicology, environmental public health, and science policy, with research geared toward holistically addressing global health concerns associated with environmentally-induced non-communicable diseases. Prior to joining the CTRIS program staff, he served as a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow in the NIH Office of the Director, Scientific Workforce Diversity office, where he oversaw the efforts of the Advisory Committee to the NIH Director, Working Group on Diversity. Brad is a humanitarian at heart, driven by the idea that the biomedical innovations we are working hard to develop to address health disparities here at home can and will go on to transform lives around the world.

4 Professor Victor G. Davila-Roman, MD Professor of Medicine, Anesthesiology and Radiology Director, Cardiovascular Imaging and Clinical Research Core Laboratory Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri, USA Professor Davila-Roman is a cardiologist with clinical and research interests in the areas of Cardiovascular Imaging, Hypertension (HTN) and heart failure. He is Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on several NIH/NHLBI grants, including WU Heart Failure Network, WU Nutrition Obesity Research Center, PRIDE program and Household Air Pollution INtervention (HAPIN) trial. He has >170 peer-reviewed publications. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in general and HTN in particular are the major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. According to WHO Global Burden of Disease report, HTN is responsible for 7% of death and disability worldwide, with 80% of deaths occurring in the developing world. As such, research and public health strategies are urgently needed to address these deadly conditions. In his talk Dr. Davila-Roman will discuss epidemiology and strategies to approach the challenges posed by HTN. Dr. Davila-Roman and the WU team have been working with RASD Rwanda on several NIH funded projects including D43 training grant HIV- & ART-Associated Cardiometabolic Research Training in Rwanda and U24 grant Developing T4 Translational Research Capacity for Control of Hypertension in Rwanda. The WU-Rwanda team proposes to strengthen this collaborative partnership with UR-CMHS Faculty of Health Sciences. The overarching goals of the strategic alliance is to develop and implement an NIH-funded clinical research and training program focused on enhancing scientific research and research capacity particular focus on cardiometabolic diseases and HTN.

5 Dominic Reeds, MD Associate Professor of Geriatrics and Nutritional Science Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri, USA Dr. Dominic Reeds is an Associate Professor of Geriatrics and Nutritional Science at Washington University, St. Louis, USA. He has several NIH active grants, and is an active member in the Diabetes Research Center, Nutrition Obesity Research Center, AIDS Clinical Trials Unit, School of Public Health (Global Health Initiative). Dr. Reeds research focuses on the pathogenesis and treatments for metabolic, anthropomorphic, and cardiovascular complications associated with HIVinfection. He also has active research projects examining pathogenic factors involved in metabolic syndrome in people of normal weight, and has several ongoing research projects examining novel therapies for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Dr Reeds has more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, is the Assistant Director of the Washington University Master s program in Clinical Investigation, and is the Chair of the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Nutrition Support Service. Dr. Reeds is currently working with RASD Rwanda to develop a collaborative research program network between Rwandan investigators and Washington University that will develop and implement an NIH-funded research and training programs focused on enhancing Rwandan clinical and scientific research capacity for investigating HIV-associated cardiometabolic complications and with other public health issues of emerging importance.
