3 NOVEMBER 18 Conference for Family, Friends Care Partners and Persons with Plenary 1 Alzheimer's Disease: Research Brings Hope! 8:30 9:45 AM Dean M. Hartley, PhD, Director of Science Ini a ves, Alzheimer s Associa on, Chicago, IL The session will provide highlights on the latest Alzheimer s disease research, including recent studies presented at the Alzheimer s Associa on Interna onal Conference and other recent studies highlighted in media. These highlights will be put into context of the current state of the field and the current state of clinical studies. In addi on, an overview of the revised diagnos cs guidelines will be shared. Plenary 2 10:00 11:00 AM Evidence Based Interven ons for People with Demen a & Their Caregivers Melanie Chavin, MS, Chief Program Officer, Alzheimer s Associa on Illinois Chapter, Chicago, IL and Greg Kyrouac, MSEd, Director, Educa on and Outreach Programs, Center for Alzheimer s Disease and Related Disorders, SIU Medicine, Springfield, IL. There is much a en on being given to evidence based interven ons for people living with demen a and their caregivers. In Illinois, the Illinois Department on Aging received a 3 year grant from the Administra on on Community Living to test a number of interven ons, from psychoeduca onal classes for caregivers, to care consulta on, to arts and exercise based interven ons for diagnosed individuals. This session will introduce audience members to a number of interven ons that are being provided by the SIU Center for Alzheimer s Disease and Related Disorders and the Alzheimer s Associa on Illinois Chapter. Plenary 3 Understanding and Responding to Demen a Related Behaviors 11:00 AM Noon Elizabeth Hagemann, Manager, Educa on & Outreach, Alzheimer s Associa on Illinois Chapter, Bloomington, IL. Behavior is a powerful form of communica on and is one of the primary ways for people with demen a to communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. However, some behaviors can present real challenges for caregivers to manage. Learn how to iden fy common behavioral triggers, decode behavioral messages, and calm a person who is experiencing common behavior challenges. 3

Community resources will be discussed and materials provided for a endees. Plenary 5 2:15 3:30 PM The Basics of Alzheimer s Disease and Current Research Opportuni es at SIU Tom Ala, MD, Professor, Department of Neurology and Interim Director, and Barbara Lokai s, BA, CCRP, Senior Clinical Research Coordinator, Center for Alzheimer s Disease and Related Disorders, SIU Medicine, Springfield, IL. In this presenta on, the most common causes of demen a in older persons will be described with an explana on of how they may be dis nguished from each other and how they may be treated. How a clinician can dis nguish Alzheimer s disease from other condi ons that may mimic Alzheimer s disease, yet be reversible, will be discussed. Available treatments for the most common causes of demen a will be described. Clinical trials currently available in central Illinois will be discussed. Plenary 6 Minimizing Your Risk for Alzheimer s Disease 3:30 4:30 PM Mehul Trivedi, PhD, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, SIU Medicine, Springfield, IL. This presenta on will focus on providing caregivers, loved ones, prac oners and individuals at risk for Alzheimer s disease (AD) with informa on regarding research studies and clinical trials focused on preven ng and/or delaying the onset of cogni ve decline. The presenta on will focus on hereditary, lifestyle, and psychosocial factors that can contribute to one s risk for cogni ve decline in the future and will incorporate evidence from clinical trials as well as epidemiological and longitudinal cohort studies of individuals at risk for AD that are focused on early detec on of AD in asymptoma c individuals at greater risk for AD as well as reducing the risk for cogni ve decline. 4
5 ABOUT THE PRESENTERS Tom Ala, MD, is Interim Director of the Center for Alzheimer s Disease and Related Disorders and a Professor in the Department of Neurology at SIU Medicine in Springfield, Illinois. For 12 years prior to coming to SIU Medicine, Dr. Ala was the lead physician for the Memory Disorder Clinic at Regions Hospital, part of the University of Minnesota system, in St. Paul, Minnesota. He received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. A er comple ng his training in neurology, also at the University of Minnesota, he was awarded a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Alzheimer s Treatment and Research Center, Regions Hospital, St. Paul, Minnesota. He is board cer fied by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Ala maintains a clinical prac ce in memory disorders at SIU Medicine. He is involved in clinical and neuropathological research in Alzheimer's disease, demen a with Lewy bodies, vascular demen a, and other demen ng illnesses and has authored a number of publica ons on these topics. He is also an ac ve member of several regional commi ees involved in the care of Alzheimer s pa ents. Melanie Chavin, MS, MNA is the Chief Program Officer for the Alzheimer s Associa on Illinois Chapter. In this role, she provides direc on and oversight for all educa on, care and support, healthcare outreach and research engagement ac vi es implemented within the organiza on s 87 county service area. Ms. Chavin earned her BA in Music from De Paul University, her Master s in Human Services/ Gerontology from Na onal Louis University, and her Master's in Nonprofit Administra on from North Park University. She is a graduate of the Diakonia program, a two year program of theological instruc on for Lutheran laity. She has worked in a variety of community based, residen al care, and hospital based se ngs, and has wri en extensively on the topics of music therapy, demen a, spirituality and aging. Elizabeth Hagemann, MA works as the Manager of Educa on and Outreach for the Alzheimer s Associa on Illinois Chapter. She serves the western 14 coun es in Central Illinois. She graduated with a Bachelor s in Psychology from Eureka College, and earned her Master s in Human Services concentra ng in gerontology from the University of Illinois at Springfield. Elizabeth enjoys blending the knowledge she learned during her studies with the experiences she gained while caring for her grandmother, who had Alzheimer s disease. Her hope is to spread awareness of Alzheimer s disease while also fostering rela onships with community partners in order to make the community as demen a friendly as possible. Dean M. Hartley, PhD is Director of Science Ini a ves at the Alzheimer s Associa on. He manages the development of the Associa on s research and scien fic ini a ves, primarily by effec vely communica ng the goals and achievements of the Alzheimer's Associa on research and science program to a wide range of audiences. In addi on, Dr. Hartley represents the Associa on s science division, both internally and externally, and works with the division s senior leaders on public rela ons ac vi es and scien fic workgroups to advance the Associa on s science agenda. Importantly, Dr. Hartley works closely with Development to build support and resources needed to advance research. Dr. Hartley completed postdoctoral fellowships in the Departments of Medicine, Gene cs, and Neurology at Harvard Medical School a er comple ng his Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Stanford University in He has a Master s Degree in Environmental Toxicology from the University of Illinois, Urbana, IL. Ann Jirmasek, MA, is a Clinical Gerontology Specialist at SIU School of Medicine, Center for Alzheimer s Disease and Related Disorders. She specializes in working with individuals with Alzheimer s disease and their families, offering family support through counseling, referral services, and educa on. She also co facilitates a support group for people in the early stages of memory loss and their family care partners. Ms. Jirmasek has a Master s Degree in Gerontology from the University of Illinois at Springfield and a Bachelor of Science from Illinois State University. 5
6 Greg Kyrouac, MSEd, has been working in the field of aging since 1982 and has been Director of Educa on and Outreach Programs at the Alzheimer s Center at SIU School of Medicine for over 20 years. He has contributed in over 20 scholarly ar cles and presenta ons at na onal and interna onal conferences. He has presented over 1000 lectures on a variety of topics related to aging and demen a at conferences and workshops, to Alzheimer s Associa on caregiver support groups, professional organiza ons and the general public in over 100 communi es in Illinois. Mr. Kyrouac has been co leading a support group in Springfield for people in the early stages of memory loss for over 15 years. He has a Master of Science in Educa on in Guidance and Counseling from Eastern Illinois University and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Barbara Lokai s, BA, CCRP is Senior Clinical Research Coordinator at the Center for Alzheimer s Disease and Related Disorders, SIU Neuroscience Ins tute, SIU Medicine, Springfield, IL. She earned her BA in Health Services Administra on at the University of Illinois at Springfield, and has worked at SIU Medicine for the past twelve years with the clinical trials conducted at the Center for Alzheimer s Disease and Related Disorders, the Neuroscience Ins tute and Department of Neurology. She is a Cer fied Clinical Research Professional through the Society of Clinical Research Associates. She was recognized as Volunteer of the Month by Make A Wish of Illinois and as Professional Employee of the Quarter at SIU School of Medicine. Phyllis Roate, MA holds a master s degree in Human Services with a concentra on in Gerontology from the University of Illinois at Springfield. She is a member of Sigma Phi Omega, honor society. She is employed as a Social Services Planner at the Illinois Department on Aging, and is responsible for administering grant funded programs for seniors under the Older Americans Act. She assists with grants administra on, evalua on ac vi es, and sub grantee repor ng ac vi es. She has developed training for both providers and caregivers of people with Alzheimer s disease, and team teaches Savvy Caregiver through a partnership with SIU School of Medicine and the Illinois Department on Aging. She serves on the Illinois Alzheimer s Disease Advisory Commi ee, and the Illinois Partners for Safety commi ee, in conjunc on with the State Strategic Plan for Injury and Violence Preven on. Mehul Trivedi, PhD, is an Assistant Professor and Clinical Neuropsychologist in the Department of Psychiatry at SIU School of Medicine. He completed his Clinical Neuropsychology Residency in the Department of Neurology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology at Northern Illinois University and a Clinical Psychology re specializa on program at the Illinois Ins tute of Technology. He came to SIU a er working as an Adult Neuropsychologist at the Thomson Memory Center in the Suburbs of Chicago. He was previously employed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurological Sciences at Rush University Medical Center. His clinical interests include neuropsychological evalua on in individuals with neurological, psychiatric, and general medical condi ons with a par cular focus on the detec on of normal versus abnormal aging. His research interests include using mul modal neuroimaging techniques in conjunc on with neuropsychological tes ng, gene cs, and modifiable risk factor analysis to inves gate early changes in brain structure and func on in cogni vely normal individuals at risk for Alzheimer s disease. He has several publica ons in this area. His research was previously funded by the Alzheimer s Associa on.
