1 Conference invitation A new perspective on care practice The interaction between science and care practice leads to a new approach to long-term care 22 and 23 January 2015 Amsterdam People s health care needs and the care landscape are changing and as a result healthcare professionals and policy makers are looking for ways to improve care. Researchers are developing new insights into care, but these often do not find their way into the training curricula for care workers or into care practice. So what would happen if care professionals, researchers, and trainers were to join forces? In January 2015 the Long-Term Care Partnership will organize its first conference in Amsterdam bringing together researchers, care practitioners and trainers with the aim of synthesising knowledge and experience relating to the renewal of long-term care. You are cordially invited to attend this conference. When 22 and 23 January 2015 Where Conference Room, the Hermitage Amsterdam, Amstel 51, 1018 DR Amsterdam The Long-Term Care Partnership is a collaboration between the University of Amsterdam, Cordaan (a major care provider) and a number of other stakeholders. Its aim is to improve long-term care by bridging the gap between research, training and care practice. Innovative and effective care practice requires a new perspective and a new approach, one that takes into account what really matters for the vulnerable people. It requires a critical appraisal of existing practice and the courage to do things differently, to innovate and discover alternatives that improve the quality of life of those in need of care and the quality of work of those who care for them. Dutch and international experts will present examples of the successful synthesis of research, care practice and education. Secretary of State for Health Martin van Rijn will deliver the closing address. The full programme is attached, but can also be found at agenda. For registration, please send an to ltcp@uva.nl with your name, institution or company name, position, and whether you plan to come on Thursday, Friday, or both days. Please let us also know if you plan to attend the dinner on Thursday evening. Prof. Dr. R.C. Pool, Centre for Social Science and Global Health, University of Amsterdam Drs. E.W.C.M. Damen, CEO Cordaan

2 Programme Thursday 22nd of January 2015 Chair: Eelco Damen, CEO Cordaan 9h00 9h30 9h30 9h45 10h00 13h00 Welcome Background Long-Term Care Partnership (LTCP) By drs. Eelco Damen and prof. dr. Robert Pool, Centre for Social Science and Global Health, University of Amsterdam Session 1 Citizenship and care The Netherlands has a comprehensive, universal and professional system for long-term care, similar to the Nordic countries. Under the pressure of increasing costs, increasing health care needs and new ideas about individual and family responsibility, current policy developments have two objectives: shifting care tasks from professionals to informal caregivers and from care institutions to home. Will citizens provide more informal care for each other, or will there remain a high level of professional care, but then paid for privately? Where will this informal care be provided and by whom? Is home such a nice place for everyone? And what do these changes mean for the relationship between government and citizens? Three experts will reflect on these questions: Dr. Barbara Da Roit (University of Amsterdam), Prof. dr. Jan Willem Duyvendak (University of Amsterdam) and Prof. dr. Marta Szebehely (University of Stockholm, Sweden). 13h00 14h00 14h00 16h30 Lunch Location: Van Limmikhof, Nieuwe Achtergracht 1a, Amsterdam Session 2 Renewal of care for vulnerable elderly A life in old age can be very enjoyable. Many older people live for years in reasonably good health and remain active. But sooner or later many people are confronted with chronic diseases and long-term disabilities. In recent years, much research has been carried out on this vulnerability in old age and the risk of loss of function or independence. This session highlights a variety of innovations in health care, focusing on prevention of loss of function, maintenance of self-reliance, improved well-being, quality of life and cost savings. Conference A new perspective on care practice, 22 and 23 January 2015 Amsterdam 2/5

3 Following an introduction of prof. Louise Gunning, President of the Board of the University of Amsterdam, three topics will be discussed: 1 What have these innovations meant to primary care? Research has revealed both surprising and disappointing results. Prof. Henriette van der Horst (Free University Amsterdam) will give an overview which is essential for further progress in policy and practice. 2 What are the controversial innovations at the interface of hospital and home care, including end of life care? Dr. Bianca Buurman (Academic Medical Centre Amsterdam) and dr. Susanne Smorenburg (Cordaan) will discuss promising developments in research and practice. 3 What have we learnt about the relationship between illness and disability on the one hand and the social problems of the elderly, including loneliness and isolation, on the other? How can we develop interventions that more adequately address these social problems? Prof. Theo van Tilburg will talk about research on this subject and clarify its relevance for policy and practice. The discussion, chaired by Wim van Minnen (until 2014 director of the collaborating organizations for the elderly, will focus on strengthening the innovation agenda for care for the vulnerable elderly. 16h30 17h00 17h00 18h00 Break Research carrousel Locations: Hermitage and Van Limmikhof Presentations and discussions of some of the Long-Term Care Partnership research projects: Annelieke Driessen, MSc. 4 Programme Friday 23th of January 2015 Chair: prof. dr. Jan Willem Duyvendak, Professor in Sociology, University of Amsterdam 9h30 9h45 9h45 12h30 Opening of the day By prof. Evelien Tonkens. (Im)possibilities and dilemmas of the integration and participation in society of people with a (mild) intellectual disability. Session 3 Participation and integration: duty or opportunity? About the socialization of people with a mild intellectual disability and the three decentralizations Support and care for people with intellectual disabilities has been undergoing change for some time. The emphasis has increasingly shifted to self-management (to use the language of the policymakers), entailing a shift from care for to caring that and, where possible, join and participate in society. This development requires critical reflection: how do policy ideology and social reality relate to each other? How do we develop realistic goals for the full participation of people with an intellectual disability? Thinking and dreaming about policy should not lead to getting lost in reality. New developments with regard to participation and integration require the stimulation the social life of those affected in relation to significant others, and interventions aimed at the intellectually in a society that is becoming increasingly challenged. Recent studies have pointed to the increased need to support people with intellectual disabilities in an increasingly complex society. Therefore it is important that a new practice is developed in which the challenges of society and care relate to insights from academic research: The challenges for the coming years in the field of disability care, by prof. Carlo Schuengel Three decentralizations: impact and challenges for people with intellectual disabilities, by dr. Femmianne Bredewold, mr. dr. Marijke Malsch and drs. Marigo Teeuwen Drs. Henk Kouwenhoven, co-referent Presenting the Handicap Experience Discussion led by the chairman Conference A new perspective on care practice, 22 and 23 January 2015 Amsterdam 4/5

5 12h30 13h30 13h30 16h30 Lunch Location: Van Limmikhof, Nieuwe Achtergracht 1a, Amsterdam Session 4 Long-term care and dementia The research group Long-term Care and Dementia continually relates research to practice. Patterns and insights can be distilled from the observations and stories of the everyday lives of people with dementia, and these can offer solutions and strategies for improving care. The focus is on the long period that people live at home, in the shadow of medical heroism and the end of life debate. Prof. Dr. Anne-Mei The, Daily life of people with dementia : an alternative, social approach of dementia and the need for stories. A paradigm shift of de dementia and science.
