1 BDHP Brain and Mental Health Conference Translational research in Neuroscience: Bridging the gap between basic science and clinical practice Tuesday 28 August 2018 Bancroft Auditorium QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute Herston, Brisbane, Queensland REGISTER TO ATTEND THIS FREE EVENT

2 WELCOME Over half of all Australians will experience a neurological or mental health condition at some point in their lives. The impact of neurological and mental illness is considerable and continues to grow, not just in Australia but around the world. It is the leading cause of both disability and premature death. The clinicians and academics of BDHP s Brain and Mental Health Theme are in a unique position to deliver translational research that identifies the causes of neurological and mental illness, and to work towards prevention, early intervention, and treatment strategies to reduce the burden of mental illness on individuals and our communities. This forum, Translational research in Neuroscience: Bridging the gap between basic science and clinical practice, provides an exciting opportunity to build on existing partnerships and create new ones. Further strengthening our collaborations will better position us to capitalise on funding from the NHMRC, the Medical Research Future Fund and other funding agencies. At this forum we will profile some successful partnerships between clinicians and researchers here in Brisbane. These presentations will examine both barriers faced by the partnership and enablers to their success. As well as innovative presentations throughout the morning, there will be a chance to network and further discuss ideas and opportunities to come together. There will also be more information about seed funding to support collaborations between clinicians and researchers. The conference is free to attend and refreshments will be provided. We look forward to seeing you there. Pankaj Sah and Dan Siskind Brain and Mental Health Theme Co-Chairs

3 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Professor Keith McNeil Keith McNeil is the Assistant Deputy Director-General and Chief Clinical Information Officer for Queensland Health. Professor McNeil plays a key role in the clinical leadership of the statewide e-health program in Queensland. He works closely with key stakeholders to maximise the clinical and patient safety benefits associated with technology in the healthcare setting, while minimising risk. Professor McNeil has previously worked within Queensland Health as the Head of Transplant Services at The Prince Charles Hospital, Chief Executive Officer at Royal Brisbane and Women s Hospital, and Chief Executive Metro North Hospital and Health Service. More recently, Professor McNeil was Chief Clinical Information Officer for Health and Care within the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom. This followed roles as Chief Executive Officer at Addenbooke s Hospital and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Professor Linda Richards Linda J. Richards is a Professor of Neuroscience and Deputy Director of the Queensland Brain Institute at The University of Queensland. She is a Fellow of both the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and is a National Health and Medical Research Council Principal Research Fellow. She is President of the Australasian Neuroscience Society and co-chair of the Australian Brain Alliance. Professor Richards is head of the brain development and disorders laboratory at QBI. Her laboratory team strives to understand how the brain forms during development and how these processes are disrupted causing human developmental brain disorders and brain cancer. Professor Richards co-founded an International Consortium for the Corpus Callosum and Cerebral Connectivity, which brings together clinicians and scientists working to identify the causes of developmental brain disorders and how best to provide support and care for those affected. Professor Richards is passionate about the public awareness of science and in 2006 she founded the Australian Brain Bee Challenge, a competition for high school students to learn about the brain. Over 30,000 high school students have participated in the annual event.

4 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Associate Professor Gail Robinson Gail Robinson is currently the recipient of a NHMRC Boosting Dementia Research Leadership Fellowship, during which she will focus on early neurocognitive diagnostic indicators for dementia. She has been a clinical neuropsychologist and researcher in Australia and London. She spent 14 years at the dynamic and historic National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery. In 2010, she transitioned from a clinical role to an academic position at The University of Queensland where she has been director of the Clinical Neuropsychology Doctoral programme ( ). Her clinical research is focused on both theoretical questions about brain-behaviour relationships like the crucial mechanisms for the executive control of language, and clinical questions regarding cognitive assessment and management of various pathologies including neurodegenerative disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, brain tumours and stroke.
