1 Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFRM) Queensland Branch Registrar Training / Continuing Professional Development Program
2 Welcome to the 2016 AFRM Queensland Branch Registrar Training / Continuing Professional Development Program. The main components of the program are: 1. Monthly QLD branch afternoon teaching session held on the 2 nd afternoon (except public holidays) each month. 2. Monthly AFRM Bi-National Training Program held on the last afternoon (except in public holidays) each month. 3. Monthly Saturday Morning Clinical Sessions between Feb and November. The Saturday Clinical Sessions are designated practice sessions for either clinical / hands-on teaching or for the Module 2 and Fellowship Clinical Exams. In July, three intensive OSCEs are expected focusing on preparation for the fellowship exam. Additional Workshops on specific topics will also be held if possible throughout the year. INSTRUCTIONS 1. Afternoon Sessions When: The Qld Branch Registrar Training session will occur on the 2 nd of the month in the afternoon between 3-5pm QLD TIME. The AFRM Bi-National Training Program () is GENERALLY held on the last of the month. The duration is 2 hours however the time will vary due to daylight saving. For February, March, October and November 2016 sessions, the will be held from 2 4 pm QLD TIME. For April, May, June, July, August and September the will be held 3-5pm QLD TIME. Where: Presentations could be delivered from the Royal Brisbane and Women s Hospital. The unit responsible for the presentation should contact AVTelemed@health.qld.gov.au (Aaron Holderness or Mike are the contact people) before hand to finalise logistics of the presentation on the day (unless otherwise determined and arranged by the Consultant responsible for organising the session). Most other hospitals have video-conferencing facilities available; please discuss whether this option is available with your supervisor. The AFRM Bi-National Training Program () can be accessed in any computer or mobile device through a the videoconference link advertised in the AFRM ebulletin. Another option might be presenting from the SIU Conference room at Princess Alexandra Hospital. However, these have to be arranged by the unit presenting directly with the SIU at least one week prior to the presentation date to confirm arrangements (especially if there are any unusual AV requirements of special considerations). The aim of these sessions is to cover a wide range of topics relevant to Rehabilitation Medicine and to assist Trainees in acquiring education and training as part of their preparation for the AFRM Examinations and for practice as a Rehabilitation Physician. The has been developed as a three-year cycle for which topics have been determined. The Qld AFRM teaching sessions may not necessarily complement the topics on every occasion. The QLD teaching session topics have been selected to broaden the scope of material covered during the education cycle and to introduce trainees to important topics not otherwise covered. This year s Program including dates, topics, subject areas and the Organising Unit is attached. Who: Names of registrar/s and supervisor/s in each listed organising unit are all listed as per preference list. It is your supervisor s decision as to who should represent the facility to present at the presentations. If presenting in the SIU Conference, it is responsibility of the organising Consultant (or their delegate) to run the session, introduce speakers, facilitate questions and discussion, close the session and thanking invited speakers etc. 2
3 SUBJECT AREAS - This is a more detailed scoping of the matters to be discussed within the topic area. The purpose is to assist those planning the session in developing their presentations, and perhaps in selecting the outside expert(s) they may wish to involve. BINATIONAL TOPIC - This column provides information as to what subject area the is covering in the same month. The Qld AFRM talk is to complement but not replicate the presentation. N.B. Once the specific Topic, Case and Guest speakers/presenters etc are finalised, it is expected that the organising unit put out a program for the session ahead of time. SUGGESTED FORMAT: total ~100 minute presentation with 15 minute discussion Case Presentation (presented by the Registrar) ~ 20 minutes Presents a Case relevant to the topic including a Rehabilitation Management Plan and a brief literature review or summary of current thinking in this area and 5 minutes for discussion. Medical / Surgical / other Aspects ~ 30 minutes An update / review of the medical, surgical or other aspects of the topic presented by someone working in this area who can provide new and current expertise on the topic. Rehabilitation Management ~ 30 minutes This should be followed by a further presentation, arranged by the Fellow responsible for the organisation of the session and/or other rehabilitation professionals on the specific rehabilitation issues of concern. presentation ~ 20 minutes The presenting team involving both registrars and Fellows should arrange this. The journal should be selected to focus on the current level of evidence in rehabilitation medicine. The relevant journal article should be circulated via the TLC ahead of time. It is acknowledged that not all topics will easily fit this format and other formats may be used although the Rehabilitation Management aspects of the topic should remain the core component. NB. All Presenters are encouraged to have Handout Notes etc available for the audience. IF the trainees wish to have a copy of the presentation they are to directly enquire with the organising registrar/consultant. 2. Saturday Morning Clinical Sessions When: Monthly from the start of Feb until the end of November, except July with 3 intensive OSCEs focusing on fellowship clinical exam. Where: at the Hospital of the designated Organising Unit (as per the attached roster) Who: All registrars (All years of training) are expected to attend all clinical sessions. 3
4 The aim of these sessions is to provide Trainees with training and experience in clinical skills and examination techniques. Clinical skills and examination training starts in the first year of training and continue throughout all years of training. Attendance by all trainees to the Saturday morning clinical training sessions is expected, regardless of the year of training. Not all Saturday morning clinical sessions need to be in strict Module 2 or Fellowship Exam format. Bedside exam technique practice or focus of particular clinical exam skills e.g. neurological or musculoskeletal exams is also appropriate. Designated Practice Sessions/Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) for Module 2 and the Fellowship Clinical Exam are planned when it is close to the time of exams. Yours sincerely, Dr Juan Miguel Rois-Gnecco Training Co-ordinator AFRM QLD regional committee. 4
