3 SUMMARY General objectives To set up a health information and surveillance programme for reporting issues relevant to ageing and health, by establishing a central databank of standardised data including baseline information on socio-demographic, dietary, lifestyle, somatometric characteristics and self reported morbidity, as well as follow up data on any of the above mentioned parameters and cause specific mortality of elderly Europeans. To develop a mechanism of analysis of data related to ageing and health by applying appropriate methodology regarding the role of the indicated parameters and/or their interactions in healthy ageing, in order to identify potential environmental determinants of self-reported morbidity and mortality of elderly Europeans. To prepare public health reports on the health status of a large cohort of Europeans aged 60 years or more, as well as on associated environmental determinants which can be used at the policy making level. To disseminate through targeted activities, the results of the project. Strategic relevance and contribution to the public health programme Health information strand. Improving information and knowledge for the development of public health. Developing mechanisms for reporting and analysis of health issues and producing public health reports. Creation of the EPIC-Elderly NAH databank with standardised baseline and follow up data on environmental determinants, self reported morbidity and cause specific mortality of European elders. An information database containing the results from systematic reviews of the relevant literature to be created, to guide subsequent analyses. The cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of environmental determinants, including potential interactions, with morbidity and mortality in different age groups of elderly, as well as with changes in morbidity in a sub-sample of the EPIC-Elderly cohort, to be investigated. Targeted dissemination of the results to take place in the form of public health reports focussed on the determinants of healthy ageing, scientific papers, leaflets, a workshop and a website. The results` exploitation to lay a scientific and policy foundation for developing public health interventions in the important field of health care for the elderly. Methods and means Data relevant to healthy ageing and its` determinants are sparse in Europe. In addition, between-country comparisons are hindered by differences in data collection, methodology and analytical strategies. This project overcomes these issues by expanding the established EPIC Elderly databank on standardized and centralised data on age-related conditions and their potential determinants with longitudinal Page 3/7

4 information on the same variables. This new databank (EPIC Elderly NAH) contains baseline and follow up data for the largest pan-european cohort of about European elders. Potential risks that may hinder the work are delays in data transfer and management, in reviewing the literature and in reporting the results. For the correct and timely fulfilment of the aims of the project, the progress of each workpackage to be closely monitored by a monitoring team. The project`s Consortium, which includes a team of experts in various fields who have successfully co-operated in previous major projects utilizing data from the same cohort (EPIC, EPIC-Elderly), further assures the effective resolution of problems encountered during the project`s lifetime.
