2 We will learn to label the parts of a plant and flower. We will learn that plants produce flowers which have male and female organs. We will learn that seeds are formed when pollen from the male organ fertilises the female organ.

20 The transfer of pollen onto the stigma Two ways: Insect- pollen sticks to the insect and is transferred to the female part (stigma). Wind- pollen is blown onto the stigma.

21 Joining of the pollen and the egg to make a seed. Pollen (male sex cell) travels along the style to reach the carpel where the female eggs are stored. The fertilised egg becomes a seed.

22 3 ways: Seeds are carried away from the parent plant to stop overcrowding By wind- dandelion seeds are blown away. By animals- they eat berries the seeds come out in the poo! By explosion- seed pods dry up then

23 The purpose of all flowers is to be pollinated and produce seeds

24 Partly used to protect the male and female parts of the plant Some plants use wind to blow the pollen and they have small leaves Plants which use insects to transfer the pollen usually have large petals which smell and are brightly coloured

25 The male part of the flower is called the stamen It has a long stalk called the filament At the top of the filament is the anther

26 The anther produces pollen

27 Carpels are the female parts They are made up of a stigma, style and ovary

28 It is at the top of the carpel It is sticky which helps catch pollen grains

29 The ovaries are where the eggs are made

30 Pollen grains brush against the insect, it flies to another plant, the grains rub on the stigma The grain of pollen grows a tube, which goes down the style until it reaches the ovary The male part joins with the female part to form a seed. This is called fertilisation. After fertilisation the petal drop off because they are no longer needed
