1 Intimate Partner Violence Prevalence Report in Nevada Special Module of Nevada Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) Joint Publication of Nevada Center for Health Statistics and Informatics University of Nevada, Reno And State Health Division Nevada State Department of Health and Human Services Nevada Center for Health Statistics and Informatics University of Nevada, Reno
2 Intimate Partner Violence Prevalence Report in Nevada Preface The Intimate Partner Violence Prevalence Report in Nevada for the years consists of four sections: (a) Aggregate Data Analysis over the years 2005 and 2006, (b) Data Analysis for the year 2006, (c) Data Analysis for the years 2005 and (d) Data Analysis for the years for the association with other Health Conditions. This special report provides a summary of the information collected from Nevada s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) throughout on the topics of the IPV optional module. Generally, the BRFSS collects data on a variety of health conditions, risk factors, preventive health measures, and demographic variables. The objective of this special report is to study target populations for programs and resources for injury prevention and control. Intimate Partner Violence is a vital public health problem in the United States and in need for further examination. Both men and women are victims of IPV, and in the recent years, different studies in different health areas have indicated negative health consequences of IPV. In this report we present the prevalence of IPV in Nevada and conduct comparison to the IPV behaviors within other states. This report is intended for health professionals, students, legislators, and others. In particular we hope it provides information regarding the effectiveness of the on-going intervention programs in Nevada towards the IPV problem. The BRFSS is the world s largest telephone survey. The survey is administered to households with individuals of 18 years or older. In all tables of this report the groupings of demographic variables follows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) methodology. Moreover, other health conditions were cross tabbed with the IPV questions to provide useful classifications. In all Tables Denominator includes respondents excluding those who responded "do not know/not sure" or who refused to respond, N denotes response numbers and % denotes weighted prevalence rates (row percentages). 8 Aggregate 2 years of BRFSS data, Intimate Partner Violence ( ) Due to the small sample size of the denominator for some of the demographic subcategories, the margin of error calculated for the 95% confidence intervals could be moderately large. Underestimating size differences between the groups might lead to unreliable results and caution must be used in interpreting prevalence rates from groups with small sample size. For example, a small number of the numerator can result in a high prevalence rate that may not accurately reflect the entire population. So, to overcome such problem and take the small sample size into account we aggregate data from multiple years. The use of aggregate data is often necessary due to dimensionality problems or data limitations in national or even regional analysis and it s more powerful because generalizations can be made about groups rather than individuals. Aggregation can not be done on different denominators (populations) (i.e. aggregating questions with a different denominator over years will lead to meaningless results since different denominators each have their own weighting variable). As such, we will not include a Table for Relationship to Perpetrator (see Table 11 page 23 and Table 18 page 38 for more details) in this section since for the year 2005 the question was only asked of respondents who reported Injuries from violence or unwanted sex past 12 months, however; for the year 2006 the same question was only asked of respondents who reported an intimate partner EVER hit, slapped, pushed, kicked, or physically hurt them in any way OR those who EVER experienced any unwanted sex by a current or former intimate partner. 4
