Commonly Heard Terms When talking about sex, orientation and gender, some words might come up that you may or may not know. Let s all get on the same page. Biological Sex: The physical sex a person is born with, as in their genitals. Gender Identity: The gender a person feels they are emotionally, which can be separate from their biological gender. I

Terms Cont. Gender Expression: The way someone expresses themselves with clothes, speech, makeup, hair, etc. Sexual Orientation: The sex someone is sexually attracted to. This can be fluid.

Terms Cont. Transgender: Someone whose gender identity or expression fails to conform to societal norms. Transexual: A person who identifies as the opposite gender of their birth sex. They may or may not choose to alter their bodies. Intersex: A person whose biological sex lies between that of a male or female. KI

Terms Cont. Asexual: Someone who has no sexual attraction to either sex. Gay/Lesbian: Term used to refer to people who are exclusively interested in having intimate and emotional relationships with people of the same sex. Bisexual: People who are attracted to both sexes.

Regardless of your biological sex, gender identity, expression, sexual orientation, or preference YOU ARE WELCOME HERE.

But Whyyyyy? Why do I have to learn about this? Chances are you know someone of the opposite sex. Father, mother, sister, brother, friend, significant other most of us live with, work with, or have friendships/relationships with people of the opposite sex (and same sex too!!). Understanding how both your and their bodies work helps us relate to one another as human beings.

Let s Start at the Beginning Puberty: The time in life when people become sexually mature. Males: years old Females: years old

Female Internal Anatomy Fallopian Tube: Place of conception Produces eggs & hormones Supports a baby Holds baby in uterus Female sex organ Moves urine

Female External Anatomy

Female Hormones Estrogen: Primary female sex hormone. Responsible for the development and regulation of the female reproductive system. Progesterone: Helps prepare your body for conception and pregnancy and regulates the monthly menstrual cycle.

Menstruation AKA: Period. It s monthly, normal vaginal bleeding. For some women is lasts 2-3 days, for others it lasts longer. Every month your body prepares for pregnancy. If no pregnancy occurs, the uterus sheds its lining. The menstrual blood is partly blood and partly tissue from inside the uterus.

Menstruation Problems Having a period is a normal, healthy process. But occasionally women experience problems. Painful Periods: Most common; symptoms can include cramping, headaches, nausea, etc. Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS): Emotional changes 2-10 days before menstruation. May include anger, irritability, insomnia, anxiety, etc. Amenorrhea: A condition in which a female stops menstruating. Can be caused by illness, stress, or weight loss.

Toxic Shock Syndrome TSS is a severe illness resulting from infection. Bacteria in the vagina secrete a toxin that gets into the blood stream. It is usually associated with prolonged tampon use. You should be careful to change tampons every 4 hours and wear a pad at night to reduce your risk of TSS.

Pelvic Exams During a pelvic exam a medical provider will examine your internal and external reproductive organs. They will look for signs of infection or other conditions by taking a sample of cells from your cervix, called a pap test. If you are sexually active, you should be getting regular pelvic exams. If you are not, you should have your first pelvic exam when you turn 21.

Breast Self Exam Checking your own breasts every month is one way you can increase your chance of detecting breast cancer. In the shower: During a bath or shower, fingers will slide easily over the skin. Raise the arm and use fingers to gently check every part of the breast. Repeat on the other side. In front of a mirror: Look at breasts while facing a mirror with hands at side then overheard. Look for any changes like swelling or dimpling of the skin. Then put hands on hips and flex chest muscles.

Breast Self Exam Cont. Lying Down: Put a pillow under the shoulder and your hand behind your hear. Using your other hang press the breast gently in small, circular motions. Repeat on other side. Have anything abnormal checked out by a health care provider.

Male Anatomy Moves urine (urethra), semen, and sperm (vas deferens) Produces fluid to lubricate sperm Produces seminal fluid Adds fluids to semen Male sex organ Male sperm are constantly replenished (unlike female eggs). There are over 360,000,000 sperm in one ejaculation. It only takes ONE to get a female pregnant. Moves sperm from testicle to urethra Stores and matures sperm Produces sperm and hormones Holds testes

Male Hormones Testosterone: Primary male sex hormone. Plays a key role in development of male reproductive tissues (like the testis and prostate) as well as increase muscle and bone mass and the growth of body hair.

Male Self Exam Roll each testicle between the thumbs and fingers of both hands. A normal testicle is firm, smooth, and egg shaped. It s normal for one to be a little larger or hang at a different height than the other. You should perform a self exam monthly. If a male is not circumcised, he must be sure to pull back the foreskin to check the head of the penis. Make sure the head of the penis is not red or painful and does not have any discharge.

Circumcision

Abstinence Making a decision to not have sex. Definition of sex differs from person to person.

Sexual Pressures You are the only one who gets to decide what your beliefs are about what is sexually right and wrong for you and whether you are ready to be sexually active. Establish your boundaries Respect yourself Respect others Know your limits and be assertive if those limits are challenged.

The WRONG Reasons You think your partner(s) will love you more. You think your partner(s) won t wait. You think everybody is doing it.

The RIGHT Reasons You have decided what s right for you.

Tips for Handling Sexual Pressure 1. Set your own boundaries and take control 2. Share those boundaries with your partner(s) 3. Avoid alcohol and drugs and partners who use 4. Don t date someone who doesn t respect your limits Remember, it s never too late to say stop. You have the right to change your mind.

Read & Think Read the following stories to yourself. While reading, be thinking: Why did they give in to sexual pressure? Why didn t they say no right away?

Story #1 I had a total crush on a senior guy and I was kind of surprised when he asked me to senior prom. Even though he seemed more interested in his friends than me that night at the dance, I still had a blast. After the dance he told me that everyone was going to a hotel to hang out. I thought it sounded kind of shady since no one else had mentioned it, but I really liked him and I didn't want him to think I wasn't fun so I went. When we got to the hotel room no one else was there. I hoped the other kids would get there soon, but I also started to get nervous. He started to kiss me and I felt pressured, but I didn't want to say anything because I thought I could trust him. He started to try and take my shirt off and then I heard a "beep." I looked up in the corner of the room and saw a red light blinking. He said it was nothing but I said I was uncomfortable and wanted to go home. He wouldn't take me home so I had to call a taxi. The next Monday at school everyone was talking about the videotape he had made in our hotel room. I was so glad that I had stopped what was going to happen in the room, but I also wish I'd listened to my instinct that told me not to go to the hotel...

Story #2 This is a story from a high school sophomore named David (not his real name) I had always felt that I would wait until marriage to have sex. I felt good about my decision, but I got a lot of pressure from all the guys on my basketball team to have sex. They bugged me constantly that I was the only virgin left on the team. They made me feel so naïve and embarrassed and uncool. I hate to say it, but I caved into their pressure. I was at a party we were all at one night and there was this girl I kinda knew there. She was hanging all over me and we were making out, then she asked me if I wanted to have sex It was just so right there in front of me and so easy. I really didn t want to back down on my morals, but I guess the physical desires took over and I caved in. It was so stupid because I didn t even use a condom. I was just lucky she didn t get pregnant. What made me so mad was alter I found out that three other guys on our basketball team had never had sex, so I hadn t been the only one, but it was too late. The crazy thing is, the guys on the team never even found out I had sex. I kept it that way. Now I felt embarrassed about what I had done, and that feeling was even worse than the feelings I had when they were making fun of me for what I hadn t done. I had just felt so much pressure, and it made me make a decision I later regretted.

Think/Pair/Share Consider the questions: Why did the people in the stories give in to the sexual pressure? AND Why didn t they say no right away? Find an elbow partner and share your ideas

Moral of the Stories All of the people in the stories were worried about what others were feeling. Be selfish about your body and what you are comfortable with. It s your right.

Think/Pair/Share The following slide has a list of six common sexual pressure lines. Partner up and think of some assertive answers for each of the pressure lines. Practice them with your partner. Take turns being the one saying the pressure line and the one answering assertively.

Pressure Lines If you loved me, you d have sex with me. Everybody s doing it. If you get pregnant, I ll marry you. Don t you want to try it? We re going to get married someday anyway. You ve had sex before. No one will find out.

Assertive Answers If you loved me, you d have sex with me. If you loved me, you d wait! Everybody s doing it. Not me. Don t you want to try it? Not now. We re going to get married someday anyway. Then let s wait until then. You ve had sex before. That doesn t matter and it s none of your business. No one will find out. I ll know. So no.

Think/Pair/Share Practice again using the assertive responses Mrs. Scott gave you along with the ones you and your partner brainstormed. Notice which ones feel better. Remember them!
