Woodland District 50 Schools School Start Times

Why? Strategic Plan Student Well-Being Goal 4: Create learning opportunities for stakeholders addressing the physical, mental, emotional and social needs of the Whole Child. Identify current practices in District 50 that address the whole child and research new educational trends to aid in the advancement of these programs including school start times

Why?

What Does Research Say Research & Best Practices American Medical Association (2016) American Academy of Pediatrics (2014) Journal of National Sleep Foundation (2015) Hanover Research Council (2010, 2011 & 2013) Learning, Media and Technology (2015) Sleep deprivation is a public health issue for adolescents putting them at risk of mental, emotional and physical stress. Body of research supports later start times especially for middle school and high schools to improve mental health, sleep deprivation, safety, depression and academic achievement.

Research from the American Medical Association Sleep deprivation is a growing public health issue Earlier start times (before 8:30 a.m.) is a key modifiable contributor to insufficient sleep Delaying school start times is an effective countermeasure to chronic sleep loss Owens, J.A. (2014). Policy Statement: School Start Times for Adolescents. Pediatrics, 134(3), Retreived from

Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics Chronic sleep loss in children and adolescents is one of the most common - and easily fixable - public health issues in the U.S. today. The research is clear that adolescents who get enough sleep have a reduced risk of being overweight or suffering depression...and have better grades, higher standardized test scores and an overall better quality of life......several recent studies have documented improvements in academic performance associated with later start times. American Academy of Pediatrics. (2014, August). Let them sleep: AAP recommends delaying of middle and high schools to combat sleep deprivation. Retrieved from: Times-of-Middle-and-High-Schools-to-Combat-Teen-Sleep-Deprivation.aspx

Research from the National Sleep Foundation Younger students were able to move their bedtimes forward to compensate for the earlier wake times needed to get to school for the earlier start time which research has been shown to be biologically difficult in older adolescents....a clash between societal demands, such as school start times and biological changes...put most teens on a later sleep-wake clock. As a result, when it is time to wake up for school, the adolescent s body says it is still the middle of the night, and he or she has had too little sleep to feel rested and alert. Appleman, E.R., Au, R., Gilbert, K.G. (2015). School start time changes and sleep patterns in elementary students. Sleep Health 1(2), Retrieved from National Sleep Foundation. doi: National Sleep Foundation: Sleep Times News Backgrounder: Later School Start Times. Retreived from

Overview of Benefits to Students Lower rates of depression 1, 2, 3, 5 Improved health, physical wellness and safety 1, 2, 3, 5 Improved mood and mental health1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Improved academic achievement 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Less tardiness and better attendance 1, 3, 4, 5 Increased attention, alertness and motivation 1, 3, 4, 5 Less falling asleep in class 1, 3, 5 Elementary students more alert earlier than adolescents 3, 4 Sources: 1 American Academy of Pediatrics; 2 American Medical Association; 3 Hanover Research Council; 4 Journal of the National Sleep Foundation; 5 Journal of Learning, Media and Technology

Why: Local Trends Middle Schools: Grayslake, Millburn, Lake Bluff, Libertyville, Lincolnshire, Lake Forest and Barrington start later ranging from 8:25-8:52 a.m. High Schools: Barrington, Naperville, Libertyville, Vernon Hills, Stevenson and Northwest Suburban District 214 Warren Township High School s O'Plaine Campus for Freshmen and Sophomores has a start time of 8:25 a.m.

What Middle School Students Say In the Spring of 2018, a 7th grade Advanced Language Arts class research assignment showed the following results: 624 Woodland 7th grade students were surveyed Two-thirds preferred 8:30 a.m. start, one-third preferred 7:30 a.m. start Just 29% said they get 8 hours of sleep on a weeknight, 15% said they get 4 hours of sleep on a weeknight

School Day Considerations Goal: Updating schedules to accommodate an 8:30 a.m. start at the Middle School Parameters: Several months lead time prior to a change Pick-up/Drop-off students during daylight hours Child Care Arrangements Bus supervision during arrival and dismissals Lessen the impact on before/after school programs/middle School athletics Time for children to have breakfast at school Neutral cost to Woodland School District 50

Considerations for Child Care Coordinate with local child care facilities prior to a start time change (e.g. Gurnee Park District, Grayslake Park District, Warren Township, Champions, local child care facilities) Time-families work schedules Pre-tax child care reimbursements

Transportation - 3 Tier System Woodland s Busing Goals Picking up and dropping off students in daylight Student ride time average 30 minutes or less Investigating bus tracking phone application Cost efficiencies with a 3-tier system Consistency with drivers for children Three routes in AM and PM for a majority of drivers 207 In-District Bus Routes 82 buses (60 large & 22 small) Part-time drivers 46 Full-time drivers 37
