Did you know more than a million Australians suffer from severe sleep apnoea? Your comprehensive guide to curing sleep apnoea
1 Contents What is Obstructive Sleep Apnoea? 2 What is OSA and how do you know you have it? What are the effects of sleep apnoea?... 3 How your dentist can help 4 Introducing the Oventus Clearway Device 6 Design and technology... 6 Treatment process... 7 Future Dental - Your sleep apnoea specialists 9
2 WHAT IS OSA? Do you constantly feel exhausted? Or is your partner a persistent snorer? About 40% of the population are snorers. Some snore regularly, some only after a few drinks, a heavy meal or if very tired and some others only while lying on their back. Snoring can not only affect intimate relationships and embarrass people who travel or visit friends, but also indicate a potentially far more sinister and potentially life-threatening problem called obstructive sleep apnoea or OSA. What is OSA and how do you know you have it? Obstructive sleep apnoea is a breathing disorder which happens to some people while they sleep. Often linked with snoring and other symptoms, sleep apnoea is caused by the airways collapsing throughout the night. The tongue falls back across the pharynx (the rear part of the mouth down to the voice box and throat area) during sleep when the muscles of the throat and tongue relax, causing a partial or total blockage of the airway and breathing. This causes temporary pauses in breathing and results in less oxygen reaching the brain, and rest of the body. These pauses can range from 10 seconds to over a minute, and may occur hundreds of times in one single evening. Because of the lack of oxygen to the brain, it forces you to wake and breathe (although you may not realise you ve woken up). Because you have had an inconsistent rest and interrupted sleeping patterns, during the hours of the day you ll likely feel sleepy and even agitated.
3 What are the effects of sleep apnoea? Left untreated, obstructive sleep apnoea can also lead to a range of other harmful conditions such as: Increased risk of heart attack and stroke Hypertension Diabetes Dementia and Alzheimer s disease OSA is a very common cause of single vehicle fatal accidents when the driver falls asleep behind the wheel. Clinical depression There is also a very high association between OSA and gastric reflux (GORD or GERD) and bruxism (grinding and clenching teeth) and clinical depression. 96% of people who have GORD and Bruxism also have Bondi OSA Junction, NSW, % of people with depression also have OSA 28% of the population over 50 have OSA It is more prevalent in males Obesity, morbid obesity and metabolic syndrome are high risk factors for OSA Poly-cystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is often associated with OSA OSA and diabetes are the two sleeping giants of medicine and, increasingly, your dentist or hygienist is the first to pick up on it.
4 HOW YOUR DENTIST CAN HELP Future Dental has been working with patients suffering from OSA for decades. Since 1980, we have constructed a wide range of appliances to help our patients. Because of our experience in this field, we have determined that one particular type stands out from the rest as a comfortable reliable appliance the Mandibular Advancement Splints (MAS). While a CPAPmachine is still regarded as the gold standard of treatment for OSA, up to 60% of users are not compliant with this treatment due to social, psychological, comfort and convenience factors. With increasing frequency, MAS are being recognised as an excellent substitute treatment. While MAS still mean having to wear an appliance in the mouth, it is far less inconvenient than CPAP. Recent studies also indicate that a well-made MAS of the right type fitted by a practitioner is just as efficient in treating OSA as CPAP.
5 After Future Dental has assessed your risk factors and determined the best MAS appliance for you, the Australian companies of OVENTUS or Somnomed fabricates these from impressions and protrusive bite registrations of your jaws taken in a 30-minute visit. We get them back in about 2 to 8 weeks, at which point you will require a further 30-minute appointment to fit them and run through maintenance and adjustments. Snoring no longer needs to affect your relationships and you can look forward to a far healthier life if your OSA is treated correctly. We are happy to assist with a range of treatments and advice for snoring and sleep apnoea. Contact us today on or visit futuredental.com.au
6 Introducing Oventus Clearway Device Future Dental is an Authorised Clearway Clinician and has undergone the necessary training to fit you for an Oventus Clearway Device which is a revolutionary treatment for people who suffer from sleep-disordered breathing. Oventus Clearway Device is a new style of custom-made mouthguard which has changed the lives of individuals who suffer from sleep-disordered breathing. This can extend to snorers and people with more severe problems including nasal obstruction. This world first sleep therapy works by redirecting the air flow through a non-obstructive breathing path by gently advancing the lower jaw. This gentle shift is enough to create a clear path, allowing you to breathe properly throughout the night. Design and Technology The Oventus Clearway Device is a leading design as the world s first and only sleep therapy which directs the air flow through to the back of the throat and bypasses nasal, soft palate and tongue obstructions. Incorporating a duckbill in the device allows air to flow directly to the back of the mouth, moving past all breathing obstacles. The device extends from the mouth like a whistle and creates a separate path. A precise 3D drawing of a patient s mouth and bite structure is designed in CAD (computer-aided design) software. The 3D printing technology processes the designs, and manufacturers a bespoke, medicalgrade mouthguard from titanium.
7 Treatment Process If you think you may suffer from a sleep-disorder and would like to change this destructive sleeping pattern, please contact us today. The following steps detail theoventus Clearway Device treatment process. 1. Attend your initial appointment During your first session, our practitioner will check all your medical information and perform a bite registration and impressions of your top and bottom teeth. Based on this assessment, our practitioner will determine if you re a candidate for an Oventus Clearway Device. 2. Have a diagnostic sleep study It is essential to the process that you have conducted a sleep study in recent years or perform one immediately. For your convenience and comfort, we can arrange a sleep study in your home with Oventus. The sleep recording devices are easy to use and come with full instructions. We will also go over the procedure with you at your consultation. At this point, you may also choose to try a temporary device or enquiry about alternative options.
8 3. 3D scan and 3D print After we have assessed your risk factors and determined your candidacy for theoventus Clearway Device, impressions and registrations of your jaw will be processed. A 30-minute appointment is required to fabricate the impression and bite registrations. 4. Check and deliver device Our practice will receive the device in 2 to 8 weeks, at which point you will require a follow-up appointment for a fitting, and a discussion on maintenance and adjustments. 5. Follow-up sleep study Once you have your Oventus Clearway Device, you will need to have a followup two night sleep study. During the first night, your sleeping pattern and behaviour will be assessed with your device, while your second night sleeping will be without your device. An at-home sleep study can be arranged. 6. Keep in touch To ensure your device is functioning correctly, we encourage you to maintain regular check-ups with us, and become part of Oventus s online portal My Clearway Community. On this portal, you can access your medical 145 Edgecliff records, Road information, education and support.
