1 Tobacco 4 th grade Lesson 1 of 4 Decisions about Tobacco Central Bucks School District

2 Objectives Students will use decision-making steps to make healthful decisions about tobacco use.

3 How does this face look? This person made a decision to chew tobacco because his friends were chewing. Stay tuned for another picture of his teeth to see the effects of smokeless tobacco on your teeth. Eww!

4 What is Smokeless Tobacco? Smokeless Tobacco: Smokeless tobacco includes both chewing tobacco and snuff. It is sometimes called "spit tobacco," because the product stimulates the salivary glands, thus making it necessary to spit the saliva out frequently. Swallowing the nicotine-filled saliva would make the user ill.

5 Harmful Effects of Smokeless Tobacco Nicotine addiction Leukoplakia [white patches in the lining of the mouth] Mouth cancer Elevated heart rate and blood pressure and higher risk of heart attack Abrasion of tooth enamel, tooth decay and tooth loss Receding gums Gum disease [gingivitis] Bad breath

6 After years of chewing tobacco: Decisions have consequences. The decision to use smokeless tobacco has negative consequences.

7 Activity On a piece of paper write one minor and one major decision you made last week. Discussion Points: What might be the consequences of such a decision? Are there better alternatives students identify?

8 Skill Development: People make many decisions every day. All people use some kind of decision-making process, even though they may not be aware of it. A minor decision is deciding what socks to wear on a given day. A major decision, such as deciding to go to somebody's birthday party, may affect lives or relationships.

9 Decision Making Skills: Development of decision-making skills is needed by students to help them make healthenhancing choices, to choose behaviors that promote health and reduce the risk of illness and injury. These skills include the recognition of need and understanding of how to make a decision.

10 Decision Making Process: 1. Analyze the situation: Define what is happening. Get input from others. Be objective rather than emotional. 2. Define the problem: Don't deal with symptoms, but focus on the actual problem. 3. Consider options / Develop solution alternatives: Each alternative must solve the problem.

11 4. Evaluate the solution alternatives. Look at both the positive and the negative consequences of each alternative. Some alternatives will have fewer "side effects", or unintended consequences. Get input from others if needed. 5. Make a choice / decision. Make the choice that has the least negative consequences and that solves the problem, accomplishes the purpose, and meets the goal. 6. Implement the plan and evaluate the decision. Make changes in the plan if needed, again using the steps of the decision-making process.

12 Scenario: Twelve-year-old Dinorah goes to school with her older sister, Kitwana, every day. After school, Dinorah usually talks with her friends and winds up walking home alone, because Kitwana has already left. Dinorah always asks Kitwana to wait for her after school because the walk home is long and a little dangerous. What could Dinorah say or do?

13 Skill Development: Decision-making practice can help people avoid serious negative consequences in complicated situations. More choices may mean a better chance of making the best decision.

14 Activity: Divide the class into small groups and give each group a copy of the student page, Making a Healthful Decision. Ask groups to fill in the decision-making steps for the situations.

15 Skill Development: Healthful options must be considered. The decision-making steps can help people make important decisions. The best decisions help improve health for ourselves and others.

16 Activity: Many children's books deal with making decisions or solving problems. While I read this book aloud you should identify the problem, write what the character is feeling, and write possible solutions to the problem.
