1 RSCI302 Drugs, Brain and Behavior Master Course Syllabus Course Overview (QM Standards 1.2) Course Description: The class will serve as an introduction to neuroscience and pharmacology of the central neural system through understanding the effects of various substances on brain function. We will focus on the biological mechanisms through which psychoactive drugs produce changes in behavior. We will take an in-depth look at commonly abused drugs such as amphetamine and alcohol, and discuss current theories of addiction. In the later modules, we will focus on drugs used to treat psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and depression, and how the mechanisms of action of these drugs give us insight into the biological basis of mental illness. Online course materials may include outlines of the textbook chapters, videos, and links to the Web resources. The learning activities will include participating into the online discussion forums, completing individual or group projects, and taking quizzes. All tests are administered online. You will not need to visit the campus at any point of the class. Course Goals: Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the student will be able to: Apply basic principles of pharmacology. Describe principles of the behavioral analysis of drug effects in nonhumans and in humans. Discuss and explain how we adapt to drugs (tolerance, sensitization, withdrawal) and develop addiction. Describe how the drugs may alter the functioning of the nervous system. Identify, discuss, and explain mechanisms of actions, side effects, physical and psychological outcomes, potential for addiction, and current trends for illicit use of various drugs. Pre-Requisites (QM Standard 1.7) No pre-requisites are required for this course, however some background in human anatomy and physiology may be helpful. Minimum Technical Requirements and Online Resources (QM Standards 1.5 & 1.6) Page 1 of 8

You must complete the Learner Responsibilities Quiz found in the orientation in order to receive verification of attendance. If you have financial aid and/or scholarships and do not complete the activity your financial aid and scholarship checks may be withheld. In addition, you must complete this activity before the first module of your course can be accessed. Instructor Information (QM Standards 1.8 & 5.3) Individual instructors complete this information. Course Materials (QM Standard 4.1 & 4.4) You will find your required textbook information in the course catalog at All other required readings and videos are included in each of the modules.
