2 Dec Dec Hospital Universitario de Santander. Bucaramanga, Colombia, Medical Intern Research Experience May 2012 to Sep Oct to Jun Oct to Jul Apr to Mar Columbia University-New York State Psychiatric Institute Applying survival analysis and other statistical techniques on the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), we identified etiological aspects and potential targets to reduce progression of severity in the spectrum of substance use disorders. In collaboration with Dr. Carlos Blanco M.D., Ph.D. Michigan State University, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatics. Using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) we identified the sociodemographic and psychopathological correlates of heroin use in the Hispanic population in the US and the factors associated with HIV infection diagnosis among heroin users in the US. In collaboration with Dr. Catalina Lopez-Quintero M.D., Ph.D. Human Behavioral Research Institute, Bogotá, Colombia. With a cross-sectional study we evaluated the predictors of high sexual prejudice among Colombian medical students and addressed the relevance of education about the topic during medical school. In collaboration with Dr. Adalberto Campo M.D., M.Sc. Spanish Mental Health Research Network (CIBERSAM) With a systematic review of the literature, we examined the longitudinal course of hallucinations in non-psychotic individuals and the relationship of hallucinations with the eventual development of psychotic disorders. In collaboration with Dr. Julio Sanjuan M.D., Ph.D. Clinical Psychiatry Research Group. Universidad Industrial de Santander We evaluated the impact of mental disorder in a series of cardiovascular parameters in patients with high blood pressure after the onset of depression. In collaboration with Dr. Martha Dallos M.D.

3 Public service and volunteer activities Jul to present Jan to Jul Jan to Mar Jan to Dec Mount Sinai Saint Luke s-roosevelt Hospitals, New York As part of my residency training, given the population the hospitals serve, I have been directly involved in the care of many underserved groups in the emergency room, inpatient and outpatient settings. I have had the opportunity to provide psychiatric care to patients with chronic and debilitating mental illness, substance use disorders, homelessness, poverty, irregular migratory status and members of minorities. Columbia University-New York State Psychiatric Institute, New York I was the study coordinator of a NIDA-funded R01 study that took place in a substance use disorders clinic in the South Bronx in NYC for the implementation of Behavioral Activation Therapy in patients with severe substance abuse. A significant percentage of the patients were in the process of reintegration to society after prison. The study goal was to identify and treat mood and anxiety disorders among these patients. By doing so we aimed to improve access to quality care, increase the rates of adherence to treatment, decrease the likelihood of relapse and facilitate the reintegration process. I was responsible for recruitment, clinical assessment, protocol implementation and coordination between patients and counselors, the research institute and the clinic. Department of Defense of Colombia. General Office for Military Health. Military Hospital in Bucaramanga, Colombia Working as an attending in a military hospital in Colombia I was directly responsible for providing primary medical care to military recruits, war veterans and the local community. The opportunity allowed me to implement different programs in collaboration with NGOs to provide care to war victims suffering acute and chronic stress from war related trauma. Radio Metropolitana Bucaramanga, Colombia I conducted a weekly radio program in a local station in Bucaramanga, Colombia, with the goal of informing and educating listeners about different health topics of interest to the community. I presented weekly topics, such as depression, anxiety disorders and substance use disorders. I also answered our listeners in a section where they called the program and asked questions "on air" about the topic of the day. During my last year of medical school I volunteered to develop the mental health module of a program of health education for poor neighborhoods in the area, developed by the department of public health of my medical school. I worked with war refugees and people suffering from social exclusion to educate them about psychiatric symptoms, and create mental health awareness. We aimed to reduce stigma of mental

4 illness and motivate the patients to seek attention and be adherent with treatment. Jan to Jun As a medical student I participated in a project to deliver health care to war refugees in Colombia sponsored by my medical school. I worked on the field, as a medical member that provided primary care attention, administered medications and educated these underserved community about healthy habits.
