2 Tips for Training Your Staff Humor Have a sense of humor. Make a joke to put people at ease at the beginning of the training. Introductions If the number of participants is not too large, you could have everyone introduce themselves. Collaborate Let them know from the very beginning that the training will be a collaborative effort. You will be relying on them to provide feedback and act as experts in the field. Friendly Use friendly and inviting language as you do your presentation. It is important to let them know that you are approachable and that you value their input. Positive Reinforcement When a person asks a question or makes a comment, make sure you provide positive reinforcement. Let them know you appreciate the question and how valid and insightful the question was, and thank them for asking it. You want all participants to see that questions and comments are a valuable aspect of the training. Feedback When a participant asks a question or poses a problem, solicit feedback from other participants. Let them know that they are the true experts in the field and that they can provide insights that come from real-world experience. Don t Be Afraid of Silence If you ask for questions or feedback from participants but hear nothing but silence, don t be afraid to make light of it. You can say I m hearing crickets chirping in the background or something amusing. People can get tense when they feel they are on the spot, so try to keep them as comfortable as possible during uncomfortable moments. Be Energetic You have to be dynamic when you are presenting. The more excited you sound about the presentation, the more excited they will be about participating. If you are a boring speaker, they will lose interest very quickly.
