5 Free HCV Rapid Test Kits available via New Statewide HCV Rapid Testing Program The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) AIDS Institute recently announced the availability of free HCV Rapid Test Kits through its New Statewide HCV Rapid Testing Program. HCV rapid test kits will be available to programs statewide that demonstrate the infrastructure to support HCV rapid testing. This infrastructure includes a valid CLIA permit and linkages with providers that at a minimum conduct HCV diagnostic testing (HCV RNA by PCR). A staff training on Integrating HCV and HIV Screening is also available through the HIV, STI and Viral Hepatitis Regional Training Centers. 13 1 st Capital City Hepatitis Day May 16, 2012 The NYSDOH, along with the Albany Hepatitis C Task Force, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany, the Harm Reduction Coalition, AIDS Council of Northeastern New York, Project Safe Point and the Albany County Department of Health are rolling out a plan for better screening and treatment in the Capital Region. The Capital City Hepatitis Day will focus on: a new rapid HCV test that allows patients to be screened in about 20 minutes trained teams will canvas Capital Region neighborhoods in mobile vans NYSDOH is planning additional initiatives including: distribution of posters and "palm cards" to individuals and clinics statewide (materials highlight widespread but silent nature of Hep C and need for screening) purchase of thousands of rapid test kits for clinics, drug treatment centers and other facilities statewide These initiatives are being launched to directly support the CDC's National Hepatitis Testing Day on May 19, and World Hepatitis Day on July 28, The Capital

Baby Boomers 8 out of 10 persons with Hep C were born between 1945 and of every 3 persons with chronic HCV in U.S. are Baby Boomers African Americans are 14% of U.S. population but account for 23% of chronic HCV cases nationally and are twice as likely to have Hep C when compared to other groups Hispanics/Latinos chronic HCV is more aggressive and carries a higher risk of cirrhosis for Hispanics; hospitalization rate for Hispanics with Hep C in NYC is twice the national average NYS Hepatitis C Hotline: CDC Disease Info Hotline: CDC-INFO

22 On July 28, 2011, in recognition of World Hepatitis Day, the National Minority Quality Forum introduced the hepatitis C Index - the surveillance monitor for hepatitis C (HCV) to provide an important resource to assist in the effort to achieve the national goal of prevention and control of HCV infections in the United States.
