ONTARIO SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM FUN FOOD, NOT JUNK FOOD: FOR HEALTHIER FUNDRAISING

MAKE YOUR NEXT SCHOOL LUNCH A FUN, HEALTHY HIT. Dear School Lunch Organizer As you ll discover in this brochure, Pita Pit now offers a range of eight delicious child-sized pitas (Petitas ) to please meat-eaters and vegetarians alike. All meet Canada s nutritional guidelines as well as the ones set by your province. Given the steep rise in childhood obesity in recent years and the vast quantities of sodium hidden in typical fast foods, you ll be pleased to learn that all our pitas have fewer calories, less fat and significantly less sodium than typical school lunches like pizzas. We even compare favourably with submarine sandwiches. Yet kids find our pitas just as fun and great-tasting. Pita Pit can cater lunches of any size from big fund-raising events to small staff meetings, teachers PD Days, and even school trips. Choose a convenient time and we ll treat you and your colleagues to a taste of Pita Pit while answering all your questions. We d also be happy to cater your next PTA meeting and give parents a chance to sample our products as well. Fun food doesn t have to be junk food; it doesn t have to be expensive either. So let s talk about injecting some Fresh Thinking, Healthy Eating into your next school lunch. Hope to hear from you soon. Your local Pita Pit owner has attached a business card to this brochure. Feel free to contact them for further information. Sincerely, Pete Pita Pete
INSTEAD OF A PIZZA LUNCH, MAKE IT A PITA LUNCH. The Pita Pit School Lunch Program will help make your next school fundraiser a hit with the kids while letting you practice the good nutrition you teach. Our fresh, healthy pita sandwiches are available in a 6-inch size that s perfect for children. We call it a Petita. The one shown at right is actual size. As for nutrition, our Chicken Breast Pita, garnished as shown, has half the calories, a quarter of the fat, and half the sodium of a one-sixth slice of a typical 16-inch veggie pizza, proving that fun food doesn t have to be junk food.
HOW IT WORKS A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO THE PITA PIT SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM STEP 1: WE MEET AT THE SCHOOL. We ll come to you to find out what you need, let you sample our pitas, answer your questions and suggest a price structure (or we ll get back to you with one). STEP 2: WE COMPLETE A MASTER FORM We ll compile all information relevant to your school s program including prices and pita selection into a simple form. From this, we (or you) can create your school s custom order forms and envelopes. STEP 3: THE ENVELOPES GO HOME. For every four lunch dates, we ll provide an envelope with an order form on it for every child. From time to time, we will include a coupon for a free Petita for every child to give them a chance to try the product at our store without obligation. This will encourage higher participation in the program and encourage kids to try new foods that are fun and healthy. Parents fill out the form, enclose payment, seal the envelopes and return them to the school. STEP 4: TEACHERS COLLECT THE SEALED ENVELOPES AND PUT THEM INTO THE CLASS S MASTER ENVELOPE WE PROVIDE. Each class will receive a larger master envelope into which the teacher will place all the individual envelopes without having to handle any money. Printed on the outside of that envelope, there will be an additional order form so your staff can order adult-size (9-inch) pitas for themselves. STEP 5: PITA PIT GETS THE ENVELOPES. You can either drop them off at the store or we can pick them up whichever is easier for you. STEP 6: WE TAKE IT FROM THERE AND MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GREAT PITA DAY. We prepare and assemble all the lunches on the morning of your school lunch event and deliver them about 30 minutes ahead of time. We label each lunch with the student s name and classroom, and group lunches by classroom to make the lunches easy for you to distribute.
PITAS: A BETTER CHOICE WE ALL KNOW THAT CHILDHOOD OBESITY IS ON THE RISE AND THAT KIDS ARE GETTING TOO MUCH FAT AND SODIUM IN THEIR DIETS, but ordering healthy foods that kids don t like and won t eat can jeopardize your fundraiser s chance of success. Fortunately, with the Pita Pit School Lunch menu, you can offer foods that are fun to eat yet are healthy, delicious and fresh. But don t take our word for it. Compare for yourself. 7 SCHOOL FOOD & BEVERAGE POLICY: NUTRITION STANDARDS FOR ONTARIO SCHOOLS A GUIDE FOR PITA PIT FRANCHISEES AND SCHOOL BOARDS
NUTRITION AND THE PITA PIT SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM AND THE SCHOOL FOOD & BEVERAGE POLICY: NUTRITION STANDARDS FOR ONTARIO SCHOOLS (NSOS) At Pita Pit, we take the health of our customers seriously. That s why we re a leader in the fast casual market. Our lean protein and fresh vegetable-based menu is a perfect fit for school boards that are serious about their students health. We use the School Food & Beverage Policy: Nutrition Standards for Ontario Schools (NSOS) as the basis for our school program. Our selection of 6-inch Petitas is based on the guidelines set forth in the ENTRÉES section of the NSOS guide. Pita Pit is pleased to offer five standardized pitas from the Sell Most category, one of which is vegetarian. We also offer three options in the Sell Less category, one of which is vegetarian. However, we are confident that there are enough choices in the superior category to make all students happy with their food choices. The NSOS rates foods based on their fat, saturated fat, protein and sodium contents. With the help of The Test Kitchen Incorporated ( a Canadian food and nutrition consulting firm employing Professional Home Economists and Registered Dietitians, we have analyzed the nutritional profile of our school lunch pitas to ensure their compliance with provincial standards. Also with the help of The Test Kitchen s nutritional experts, we have built a BAP (Build a Pita) calculator to show how well our pita sandwiches, garnished as described, meet the daily serving requirements for Vegetables, Grains, Milk & Alternatives, and Meat & Alternatives as laid out in Canada s Food Guide. Meat & Alt 56.00% 37.33% 28.00% 18.67% Sample from our BAP Calculator Age of student % of daily requirements met by age and sex (ages 4-13 do not differentiate by sex) The example above is for a Chicken Breast Petita with lettuce, mushrooms, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, light mayonnaise and cheddar cheese. After enjoying that pita at your school, boys and girls aged 4 to 8 would go home having met 42 56% of their daily nutritional requirements in three categories. Could a slice of pizza (even if it fell under the NSOS guidelines for fat and sodium) provide that?

MOST PITAS WORK WITH YOUR LOCAL PITA PIT OWNER TO CREATE THE PERFECT MENU FOR YOUR SCHOOL! PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION Pita Pit will work with each school to create information to send to parents; to work out delivery and payment logistics, and to determine all program particulars. We currently deliver our school lunch program to hundreds of schools across Canada, and one thing we have learned is that each school is different, with its own preferred way of administering school lunches. Pete Rather than try to shoehorn everyone into a set program of our design, we listen to each school and work with their school lunch committee to ensure that our program works well for them. For additional information, please contact your local Pita Pit or get in touch with Tanner Johnson at tanner@pitapit.com / Or contact Pita Pit head office at info@pitapit.com / For Ontario nutrition guidelines and other information on healthy schools, go to:
