OPTIFAST VLCD Program- Pharmacy Training OPTIFAST VLCD is a food for special medical purposes for the dietary management of obesity. Must be used under medical supervision. For training purposes only. 1
Learning objectives What is OPTIFAST VLCD? Understand how the Program works Understand the flexibility of the Program Be familiar with the differences between the different Levels of the Program. Be able to confidently recommend the OPTIFAST VLCD product range to appropriate customers. Know who can use the OPTIFAST VLCD Program. 2
What is OPTIFAST VLCD? Very Low Calorie Diet, for the dietary management of obesity. Nutritionally complete program with the inclusion of specially formulated shakes, bars, soups and desserts. Replace 1 to 3 meals a day depending on which level of the Program an individual is on. Provides sufficient protein to help maintain lean muscle mass during fast weight loss. 3 3
How does the Program work? Program is structured into 4 levels: 3 of the levels are for active weight loss 1 level is for maintenance The rate of weight loss varies between levels: The 3 active weight loss levels are Intensive Level Active 2 Level Active 1 Level 4
Flexibility of the Program The Program is flexible, you can choose to start at any level The level you choose depends on your weight loss goals and lifestyle needs Where appropriate, we encourage people to start on the Intensive Level as this is where the greatest weight loss occurs (for up to 12 weeks) If you would like to include a meal or 2 with 'real food' and are happy with a more gradual weight loss, you can choose to replace either 2 or 1 meals each day You can also move between levels as your goals or lifestyle needs change over time Once you have achieved your weight loss goals you can move into maintenance. 5
Intensive Level Replaces all 3 meals with OPTIFAST VLCD products "Very low calorie diet" component of the Program Induces ketosis which means your body burns fat for fast weight loss Weekly weight losses averaging approximately 1-2.5kg per week (when replacing all 3 meals each day over a period of up to 12 weeks) 1,2 Should only be on Intensive Level for up to 12 weeks If there is still a significant amount of weight to be lost after 12 weeks on the Intensive Level, it is advised to follow the Active 2 Level for a minimum of two weeks before continuing on the Intensive Level. Always seek the advice of a healthcare professional. References: 1. Delbridge, E. & Proietto, J. Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2006;15(Suppl): Mustajoki, P. & Pekkarinen, T. Obesity Reviews, 2001;(2):
Intensive Level In addition to the 3 OPTIFAST VLCD products, consume: 2 litres of calorie-free fluid (preferably water) at least 2 cups of non-starchy vegetables 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil. Visit the OPTIFAST VLCD website for a list of allowed foods on the Program. A program of regular light exercise enhances well being and therefore the like hood of success. 7
For more gradual weight loss Active 2 Level OPTIFAST VLCD products are used as meal replacements to replace 2 meals You can use any combination of OPTIFAST VLCD products Include 1 healthy meal (approximately 350 calories) Plus 1 piece of fruit, 1 serve of dairy, at least 2 cups of non-starchy vegetables and 2 litres of calorie-free fluid a day (preferably water) 8
For more gradual weight loss Active 2 Level Active 1 Level OPTIFAST VLCD products are used as a meal replacement to replace 1 meal Include 2 healthy meals (approximately 350 calories each) Plus 2 pieces of fruit, 1 serve of dairy, at least 2 cups of non-starchy vegetables and 2 litres of calorie-free fluid a day (preferably water) 9
Who can use the Program? The OPTIFAST VLCD Program is suitable for you if your BMI is 30+ If you have a BMI of 27 + and also have co morbidities such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, high cholesterol or other health risks that are associated with excess weight A weight circumference of greater than or equal to 102 cm in men and greater than or equal 88cm in women 10
Who should not use the Program Pregnancy Those trying to conceive Lactation (breastfeeding) Under 18 years Over 65 years Acute heart disease, advancing renal disease, advanced hepatic disease or over psychosis People with other medical conditions not mentioned above should consult a healthcare professional before going on the Program Patients that fall under any category listed here but wish to go on the OPTIFAST VLCD Program must speak to their healthcare professional for individual advice. 11
