How Nutritious is Food in TV Programs Targeting Teens? Dr. Mary Roseman, RD, LD, CHE Associate Professor Department of Nutrition & Hospitality Management University of Mississippi
Introduction The article published in JNEB , Co-Authors: Morgan Poor, University of San Diego Tammy Stephenson, University of Kentucky
Introduction Children spend more time watching TV than other media activity Exposure to food advertisements food advertisements/day Majority of foods high in sugar, fat, and sodium Advertising in children s programs in ,000 food, beverage, and restaurant commercials Influence behavior and lead to increased consumption of snacks, sugar-sweetened beverages, and fast food.
Introduction Amount of time children spend viewing television programs is increasing 2005 vs minutes more Children s viewing behaviors continue to change.
Literature on Food References in TV Programs Research regarding food references in TV programs is limited (only 7) and dated Only 2 published in last decade More than half of food references were toward nonnutritious food Only 1 study published on children s TV programs in last decade
Literature on Food References in TV Programs Average number of food references ranged from 4.8 to 17 per hour In the study of children, unhealthy foods received nearly 2X the total airtime compared with healthy foods
Objective of the Study The objective of the study was to examine food references in television programming targeted at 11- to 14-year-olds, or the age group marketers have labeled tweens.
Importance of Study In children, television viewing is at its highest among tweens Averages more than 5 hours/day TV in their bedroom 54% among 8- to 10-year-olds 76% among 11- to 18-year-olds Usually without adult supervision Extends beyond television and includes the Internet, YouTube, and DVD
Other Important Factors Children form connections to TV characters Characters enthusiasm for certain foods could have more influence than food advertising Children imitate another person if that person is liked or admired by the child and the same age or slightly older Impact of modeling on children s food preferences and consumption patterns
Study Methods Examined food references in 6 television programs All foods eaten, shown, or talked about Disney Channel cable television, #1 TV network for tweens and available in 99 million U.S. homes 24 hours/day 5 weekday afternoon & early evening 20 hours programming broadcast between 4:00-7:59 p.m. Excluded commercial breaks and opening and ending credits.
Study Methods Food scenes were compared to USDA MyPlate Analyzed according to modified Scheidt & Daniel s Ratio of Recommended to Restricted Food Components (RRR)
MyPlate food groups: Methods: MyPlate fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, dairy, and oils. combination (e.g., pasta alfredo, bean burrito, chicken pot pie, pizza, sub sandwich) OR other (e.g., chips, cookies, donuts, candy, sugar sweetened beverages, coffee, water)
Methods: Modified RRR The equation for RRR 21 is as follows: (%DV protein + %DV fiber + %DV calcium + %DV iron + %DV vitamin A + %DV vitamin C)/6 (%DV calories + %DV sugars + %DV cholesterol + %DV saturated fat + %DV sodium)/5 Scheidt & Daniel s RRR is interpreted such that the more nutritious foods score >1.0; foods <1.0 are classified as less nutritious. Modified RRR: >3.0, , , , , and <0.25
Results: Frequency of FRS by Meal Type Meal Time Frequency Percent Snack* Dinner Lunch Breakfast Not Enough Information Total
Results: Frequency FRS Seen, Consumed or Mentioned Type of Food Reference Frequency Percent Visual Verbal Consumptive Verbal & Visual Verbal & Consumptive Visual & Consumptive Verbal, Visual, & Consumptive Total
Results of RRR and MyPlate Food Groups RRR > 3.0 RRR RRR RRR RRR RRR <0.25 NI* Total Percent Grains Vegetables Fruits Dairy Protein Foods Oils Combination Other Total Percent
Discussion Food references 2X more frequent in our children s cable programming study compared to past research (broadcast network prime time programming not targeted to children) Early studies on FRS reported an avg. of 6-9/hour vs. our finding of 16.6 FRS/hour This is comparable to the 2001 study of prime time television programs that reported 17 FRS/hour
Discussion Based on MyPlate Only 66 of 331 FRS were a meal occasion Only 24% of 880 foods were fruits or vegetables Based on MyPlate, nearly 50% of the foods in this study did not fit into any food group and were considered other 42%, were other foods that were high in sugar and/or fat (lowest modified RRR score)
Conclusions TV programming can expose children to positive and negative food messages through the placement of food into the story. Existing analysis of food in TV programs, as well modeling with children, suggests that this topic deserves attention Who needs to be involved? Dietitians/nutritionist, researchers, health professionals, industry (sponsorships), and parents/ society A good model may be historical treatment of smoking in TV programs.
