1 European Union and UNICEF in Angola 17 million Euros contribution agreement for Birth Registration and Justice for Children SIGNING EVENT March 19, 2014 On March 19 th, in the Camões Institute (Portuguese Embassy) of Luanda, the European Union (EU) and UNICEF signed the agreement to support the Government of Angola to improve birth registration as well as expand access to justice for children The list of participants is enclosed. After a brief introduction reminding objectives of the 17 million Euros project, which 15 million Euros are provided by the EU and 2 million by UNICEF, both UNICEF Angola Representative, Francisco Songane and the EU ambassador in Angola, Gordon Kricke, made speeches. This is an important partnership that seeks to put the protection of children at the forefront of the country s development agenda. We know that birth registration is a critical start in life, guaranteeing a child their right to identity we can help protect them as they grow up. This investment in civil registration systems for children will help support the Government of Angola s efforts modernize and decentralize the public administration, said Francisco Songane, UNICEF Angola Representative. The European Union is proud to be able to give these 15 million Euros to help the Ministry of Justice to do its crucial work of birth registration. It will ensure that millions of children will have more access to schools, hospitals, jobs and justice in the future; also areas in which the European Union is supporting the programmes of the Government of Angola, said EU ambassador in Angola, Gordon Kricke. We believe that thanks to these efforts, Angolans will have more opportunities and better conditions in life, which is our key objective in our work of strengthening political and economic relations between Angola and Europe.
