2 The following is a compilation of the work undertaken by HAI since 2004 in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MOH). All the materials have been approved for use by the Health Promotion and Maternal and Child Health Departments at the MoH. FETO NIA FUNU DOCUMENTARY FILM Description: Feto nia Funu is a two-part, documentary style, educational video created in It is filmed throughout Timor and is in Tetum. Copies are available with English subtitles. Part one is about pregnancy and follows pregnant women, their families and health professionals to provide information about the following topics: Ante-natal care modern and traditional practice Nutrition Planning for the birth Benefits of assisted delivery Danger signs during pregnancy Part two is about birth and post partum care and covers the following topics: Preventing hypothermia Benefits of immediate breastfeeding Infection prevention in mother and baby Immunisation Nutrition Role of health practitioners in first week post birth Feto Nia Funu has been approved for use in 2007 by the Maternal and Child Health & Health Promotion Departments at the MoH. Where to Use: Feto nia Funu has been shown extensively throughout Timor. Some communities believe that everyone should see this film but some communities feel that only married people should see it. Our strategy has been to ask the community leaders what they think after seeing the film. Feto nia Funu is long and covers many different issues so the best setting for showing this film is in a place where the distraction is at a minimum. 3 Format: Compatible with: DVD players, Computers with Windows Media Player software & Computers with Quicktime software Target Group: Women and men of reproductive age FETO NIA FUNU DISCUSSION GUIDE The discussion guide is a tool that was developed to further learning from the film. The guide contains questions that encourage additional thought and discussion about the key topics in the film. Process: After Part 1 the facilitator will facilitates a discussion based on the questions specific to Part 1. The facilitator will then play Part 2. When Part 2 is complete the facilitator should facilitate a discussion based on the questions specific to Part 2. ESPASU OAN & DISCUSSION GUIDE Description: Fo Espasu Oan: Hari Uma Kain Nia Futuru is a two part documentary style, educational film that was created in It is filmed in rural East Timor and is in Tetum language. Part One examines the impact of having many children over a short period by exploring the following topics: Health of the mother and unborn child Health of child Emotional development of the child Possibility of education for the children Financial standing of the family Part Two explores the different types of contraception available such as: Exclusive breast feeding Calendar/Collar (beads) Pill Injection (Depovera) Implant IUD Part One & Two have been approved for use for in 2009 by the Maternal and Child Health and Health Promotion Departments at the Ministry of Health. 4 After much discussion is has been agreed that Part One can be shown to the community at large. Part Two however requires a midwife or health professional present to conduct a discussion to clarify information and answer questions as they arise. Community members and MoH regard Part Two as information that should only be available to married couples. Target Group: Women and men of reproductive age Length: Part 1: 27 minutes, Part 2: 23 minutes (plus discussion time) Format Compatible With: DVD players, computers with Windows Media Player software, Computers with Quicktime software EDUCATIONAL RADIO SPOTS The radio spots are six drama style spots that target the following topic areas: Ante-natal Care Birth Planning Birth at home with assistance of midwife Birth in a health facility Post Partum check-up at home Post Partum check-up in the clinic. Where to Use: Primarily designed to be played on radio, they can be incorporated into any audio educational context. Length: Each spot is about 2 minutes in length. Target Group: Women and men of reproductive age. EDUCATIONAL CASSETTE The cassette is a blend of the above mentioned radio spots and Timorese music, can be played in any setting where a cassette player. BREASTFEEDING AND DANGER SIGNS SONGS Susben Kinur is a 2:46 miunute song that promotes feeding colostrum to newborns. It s a rap style sing that lists the benefits to feeding colostrums. 5 HAKUUR BA TELEVISION DRAMA Description: An educational television drama in Tetun language of two families and their journey through pregnancy. The drama focuses on issues such as: Safe and unsafe antenatal care Danger signs during pregnancy Benefits of birth in a health facility Role of the husband in promoting safe practice within the family unit Where to use: Hakuur Ba is a easy to understand. The content is appropriate for all members of the public including children. Hakuur Ba can be used in any setting where a television or projector can be seen and heard. Sede Suku with a projector Health Clinic waiting room on a TV Health expo/meetings Target Group: Women and men of reproductive age Format: Compatible with: DVD players, Computers with Windows Media Player software and computers with Quicktime software. Length: Approx 20 minutes. MAI ITA KOKO TRAINING PACKAGE Mai Ita Koko is a training package about Maternal and Newborn Care. It utilises a series of visual media aids in the form of photographs, laminated poster cards, and drawings. To date the MIK training package has been used to train District Trainers and Community Health Volunteers. Particular emphasis has been placed on making this package short and easy to understand and easy to use. MIK focuses on 7 areas Birth Planning Antenatal Care Birth in a Health Facility Assisted Birth at Home Feeding Colotstrum HealthAllianceInternational ListofResourcesasofAugust2009 5

6 Post Partum care for Mother & Child Spacing the birth of children Participants are taught how to provide clear, basic information to pregnant women and their families in these seven topic areas using photographs and pictures as aids. Where to Use: This training package can be used in any training context throughout Timor Leste. To date it has been delivered to people with limited health knowledge but it is not limited to this group. Length: District Trainers Training: 1 day (9-5), Community Health Worker Training: 1 day (9-5), plus preparation time. Resources: All training resources are available on disk. Where possible HAI will supply Laminated A4 photo-cards and action poster, as well as a trainer s manual. HAI s Baby Friendly Facility video (Colleen s video tour CD) Description: A short promotional video describing benefits and services provided at HAI s Birth- Friendly Facilities. The video has four main sections: Where to use: Introduction: Importance of babies in East Timor and how many die. Ita Nia Uma Partu: What it is, what it has (traditional and modern equipment) Interviews and testimonials: Benefits, services, and safety of INUP by women, families, midwives, community members, and Xefe We welcome you to use the INUP: Stories about spreading the word and inviting women and families to visit the INUP and ask questions There are several potential uses for the BFF promotional video: Shown at SISCa events within the BFF catchment area to increase utilization. Streamed at health facilities during ANC days in BFF catchment communities The video could be used in new or potential BFF communities to educate about the BFF concept and promote community acceptance. Shown in conjunction with viewing of the Feta Nia Funo film or other health promotion activities which promotes safe delivery practices. Length: The video is about 10 minutes in length. 7 Format Compatible With: DVD players, Computers with Windows Media Player software, Computers with Quicktime software SHORT EDUCATIONAL FILMS: Maternal Care and Child Spacing With the purpose of reinforcing key information, HAI created five short films about the following topics: Birthplan Preparing for Birth Birth with Midwife Colostrum Post Partum Check and Child Spacing The films are short and very easy to understand. Each film only addresses one topic and therefore can be used individually or as a pack of five. Where to Use: The films can be used in the following circumstances: To compliment the MIK training package as they address the same information.
